and served in those strange little sherry glasses which you see all the time on Coronation Street.
  3. come on Simon, that is unbelievably tacky! I expected more of you (you see, one month of marriage and I am already a cynical old witch ) Meg and David, I've never been but have heard that Le Poule au Pot is supposed to be one of the most romantic restaurants in London And this might be of some use...Square Meal link for Romantic restaurants
  4. Is either party willing to post their recipe here? I'm of the goose fat persuasion but am willing to experiment....
  5. similar to my dinner last night. Onion and garlic fried in a little oil add about two handfuls of chopped up pancetta fried until crisp then added left over roast chicken from Sunday and a glass of red wind, reduced until about 2 tbsp left. Spooned chicken over buttered toast whlist adding some more butter to the juices in the pan and poured over toast.
  6. I'm getting very concerned about you Tony
  7. I went about 2 weeks ago. Place was about 3/4 full by the time we left and I got the impression he was fully booked. Even whlist I was there someone pulled out the Observer article so I think people are still going there because of it. However, Francois said that he is pleased he is getting more regulars as a result of the article and there was another waiter there on the night we went. My husband says lunchtimes are much less busy. Food still fab, Francois as mad as ever, give it a go...
  8. Sam - if you are in Amsterdam at the mo I recommend 't Jagershuis, Amstelzijde 2-4, 1184 VA Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, it's about a 15 min taxi ride outside of central Amsterdam. I had a very lovely meal there about 2 weeks ago. all in Dutch but you can look at the pictures!
  9. I am starting a new job in Wapping on Monday and it is going to be very hard to leave Borough which has turned into a foodie heaven over the last 5 years. I am interested not just in restaurants but also sandwich shops (will anything replace my beloved Konditor and Cook?), pubs and delis. I've had a quick trawl of the board and have noted Wharf. Grateful for any other suggestions from Tony our Wapping resident and everyone else. C
  10. how far in advance do you think you need to book The Merchant House and accommodation? Scott and Sam - where did you stay? C
  11. i'm surprised you could remember anything after that
  12. practically everything we all write on here is opinion, in fact, most of life in general is subjective so we don't need to write IMHO everytime we say somthing, of course people are entitled to their opinion... Saying that my husband knows that I am right on everything and everything he says is just his lowly opinion peace man.
  13. I think one would have to know what the readership ( or viewing ) of each of the sections would be to make a comparison. Perhaps their Ad rate card might give a clue
  14. Truc Vert on North Audley Street just off Oxford Street is great. They import goodies from France every week but it's the Villandry style tables at the back which are the real treat. It's a great place to stop off in-between fighting your way down Oxford St. The menu is quite short with things 'from the kitchen' or 'from the shop'. From the shop you can buy cheese or charcuterie by the pound, selection of pates or garlic and herb chicken from the rotisserie. From the kitchen are salads, brushetta, grilled fish, speciality sausages etc. and the bread is great, served on a little wooden chopping board. (I'm a sucker for a novelty!) You can select wine at shop prices and pay a £3.50 corkage so you can get a decent bottle to accompany your lunch. Service can be a little slow but the fact that you can get a delicious lunch just off the hell hole which is Oxford St far than makes up for it….
  15. NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
  16. wouldn't say Baltic is plush. The bar is lively, great selection of cocktails and vodka. The restaurant is quite bare with high ceilings, open beams and lots of light. Food was quite good to good not outstanding. What about The Admiralty at Somerset House, nice walk over the new Hungerford Bridge...?
  17. actually that doesn't look half bad but those eggs do look a bit obscene P.S what a fantastic website!
  18. ok, take us through what it consists of..
  19. they have pictures of saveloys? aahhh fantastic, can't wait to try it out in Singapore.
  20. and those beer googles tend to make you forget that chicken nuggets primarily consist of chicken skin and water
  21. reminds me of the time i was eating a Ginsters cornish pasty after one too many sherrys. I bit into a large clump of hair which was inside the pasty, I just discarded the hair and ate the rest
  22. that is truly appalling. Is anyone a fan the 'bender in a bun' from Wimpy's? quite apart from the name it looks revolting Can't think of a restaurant but I do love crab sticks and saveloys
  23. am I the only one who can see where this thread is going to end up?
  24. I've been there a few times (at your recommendation Wilfrid!) and find the place an absolute scream. Francois, the waiter, is hilarious. I speak absolutely no French but we still manage to have a conversation in both languages! Last time we got free Kir's and calvados. In my opinion even if the food is a little hit and miss it is worth going for the atmosphere. Food that I and others have had include a very tasty fish soup with rouille, a slightly tough entrecote with some strange green sauce with lovely crisp fries. Last time I had guinea fowl with bacon and cabbage and it was moist, succulent and flavoursome and the rabbit was as good as any I’ve had in La Trouville. It strikes me as an institution, Francois seemed to know everyone who went by and he makes everyone feel really welcome. Long live Le Pigalle!
  25. isn't it known as "lady of the sea"? that's always put me off
