Truth be told: Where've you eaten lately? (Part 2)
Daddy-A replied to a topic in Western Canada: Dining
Okay ... am I the only one that for a fleeting moment thought that Ling had eaten ALL of that?? Excellent pictures! Must add Parkside to my list to re-visit ... right after Pear Tree who seem to be stalled with their renos. A. -
Where did I say that? Where? I've been know to go to Earl's simply for a bottle of Yalumba ... and some dry ribs too! Great value. A.

For REALLY fresh, how about a meal from the Outstanding in the Field organization? They'll be at the farm out at UBC on August 14th (DETAILS HERE) ... and David Hawksworth is cooking. He mentioned something about some Saskatchewan Morrels that had arrived today ... called them Prairie Truffles Hopefully those will see their way onto the plate on the 14th. A.

Just a reminder that the discussion needs to focus on restaurants in Vancouver & Western Canada. A more General discussion on odd restaurant names can be found HERE and HERE Thanks A.

I've just pruned the series of posts in here about the "usefulness" of PR in the restaurant industry. They were off topic, and some were getting a bit mean-spirited. This thread is to discuss Watermark. As per kissmekate's suggestion, a new thread has been started in General about PR. [CLICK] If you've had a comment removed from this thread that you;d like to re-post in the new thread, please PM me and I'll send it to you to re-post. Thanks. A.

Now that looks like a reason for a trip to the 'Peg! A.

Yes, let's start speaking about local specifics to keep things OT for this forum. The discsussion of mark-ups pertaining to Vancouver/Western Canada I believe has been covered. From a mark-up POV, I found the Aurora list quite good. I'll admitt to being a bit biased towards their all BC approach. Earls (I know I'll take some flack for this) also does an admirable job. I'm sure others more educated than I can comment further ... A.

Excellent points, both of you. Sometimes its easy to get a skewed perspective when you live here. I agree, hopefully they'll keep coming and discover more! A.

Call me cynical ... but do these magazines actually send anyone out here? I'm quite serious when I ask, not because I have any issue with their selections, only that I see the same names pop up time after time. Tojo's for instance. No disrespect to the place, but there are other places I would suggest before Tojo's because of the price point alone. I know we're being scouted by many (if not all) the food media for story ideas. Here's a tip: spend the money and come out to visit! We've grown a bit since 2001. A.

Thanks for the disclaimer! And welcome to the eGullet throngs. Nice to have another voice from the valley. A.

After a discussion with phaelon56 (host of the Coffee & Tea Forum) we've decided to move this discussion to the Coffee & Tea Forum. Is the $2 latte (or its equivalent) happening elsewhere? Is a good latte possible for $2? Thanks! A.

Just wondering out loud ... could the container-drivers strike be a culprit? A.

Ummm ... I think the dog might care if the chef was standing behind him with a cleaver ... Don't they serve Tako (octopus) at Octopus Garden? After one inning, the score is Vancouver:1, Ducky:0 Wasn't there a place on Main near Pender called Fuk Yew? In Portland, we're just blocks away from "Miso Happi". A.

Can you explain what you mean? I haven't seen any bashing, only people expressing opinions. I'm curious to find out what yours is. A.

This is at nobody's prompting ... Aurora has a fine cheese list, and I agree with Jeff's fave. We are extemely lucky in BC. "J" and I snuck into Paleys place here in Portland for a late night cheese plate and a glass or two of the local grape. The wine here is really good ... but our cheeses are as good if not better than the OR product. I'll post the Paley's list when we get back. A.

Thanks for the heads up Bill. I'll add the Whistler links soon! Deborah's links are the same I found A.

Nor at this end. Subtle humour never transmitts well on-line A.

Wow. Now we're critiquing a restaurant based on its name??? Sam was right ... tough crowd. All I know, is I'd like the licence that allowed me to have a full deck of people during the Festival of Lights Fireworks. The view from that patio must have been pretty good ... and enjoying the fireworks with a Stella and a plate of deep-fried whatever sounds pretty good too. A.

Looks like proof to me. nondual1, unless you're prepared to foot the legal bill on this one to challenge it, I think we can consider this issue closed. Translation: Let's move this discussion along folks. Neil, kurtis, chef jeff and other industry types ... any knowledge of anyone in town who has suffered one of these penalties due to BYOB? A.

Been there about 20 years ago while I was interviewing for a job in Trail Speaking of Trail ... do you like campy Italian? Welcome to eGullet Breeze. Looking forward to your input on some of the better wine-stops along the way in the Okanagan. A.

You have all got to be kidding me! Here in Vancouver the warm weather has only been with us for a couple weeks. Cold and wet before that so our tomato crops are WAY behind. I haven't even had my first summer tomato and you're craving stew??? Let me get through my corn, tomatos, eggplants and a case of rosé and then we'll talk Some braised lamb shanks would be tasty though .... A.

It's the end of an era folks ... the end of that one establishment that added a small touch of "street" to our little hamlet ... a place we could proudly say had been adopted by gangsta's around the world ... Phô Bich Nga is no more! Drove by there today and a new sign is in place. Still a phô place, but it's just not the same. A.

Thanks Sam. Finally a regional comment in a regional forum. Let's keep this about Vancouver. Further discussion of smokers rights or Danish Death Metal (the Norwegian Goth-Rock trumps all of you btw) needs to take place in the General forum. Thanks Arne

You poor, hungry, desparate man. I feel your pain. Try living in North Burnaby ... Pear Tree notwithstanding. A.

To keep things OT, I've started a new thread on Corkage in BC HERE. A.
