  1. Husband and I had dinner at Bradley Ogden on Monday night. No tasting menu available (but I didn't call in advance).

I had the lamb chop and my husband had the ribeye, both of which were cooked perfectly (the char on the meat was shockingly perfect). However, the highlight of the night was the foie gras three ways. Seared and a mousse as described in the initial post along with some sort of gelee (my apologies -- I can't recall the exact description). Without a doubt, the best foie gras I've ever had, for any of the 3 preparations.

I'd recommend it in a heartbeat and am looking forward to a return trip.

  2. We were there in September, so sort of recently. It was outstanding and I would recommend it without any hestitation. One of the top 3 meals we've ever had. Service was attentive without being overbearing.

We had the tasting menu with wine pairings. We started with 2 glasses of champagne as well, and the total for 2 was approx. $500 with tax & tip. I think the wine pairings ran us about $80-90 each, so that was a decent portion of the bill.

  3. Ok - my reservation is next weekend so I want to make sure I'm clear on the ordering options....

    1. Wine pairings have run between $75- 100+ with a very accommodating sommelier.

    2. A table of 4 has these "menu" options.

    A. the "regular" menu with all 4 having either the tasting, veg. or 5 course.

    B. a different tasting menu for every person at an add'l $100 per person.

and C. -- I think (and hope) -- a combination of the regular menu options (5 course, tasting & veg.) for all diners at the same table at no add'l charge.

My parents are joining us next week. While I love them dearly, they are not the foodies my husband and I are and would probably prefer the 5 course to the tasting, which is what we'd prefer.

Is this in fact possible or am I going to need to breathe even more deeply when I pay the bill for 4 tasting menus with wine pairings in order to get those for us???

  4. Can one order a la carte at Per Se?

I don't think so, because the prices are all based on multi-course menus. Then again, I didn't expect you could get more than one type of menu either until I read this thread....

Does anyone know if the wine list is available for review in advance (by email, fax or mail)? I'm still a novice at my wine selection and I'd like the opportunity to peek at it a few days ahead if I can.

  5. Steak -- El Gaucho, in downtown. Sort of casual atmosphere, but great steaks.

Or if you want a variety of meat and want to feel unbelievably full, Amazonia (right across from the Hyatt). It's an all-you-can-eat churascuria (sp??). The waiters walk around with different types of meat on a spit and you have a little "on/off" piece of wood to signal that you don't want more!! There's a "side dish" buffet with rices, potato, salad, etc.

We had great seafood all over the island. We also like Papiamiento. It's a house turned restaurant, with dining around an old swimming pool that looks like a pond. Nice vibe, good seafood cooked on hot stones and a wonderful breeze in the evenings.

On a casual note, Iguana Joe's in downtown had decent pub fare & drinks -- burgers, chicken sandwiches, etc.

  6. Having recently had ramps for the 1st time last week, I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on where to find them in CT or central MA (springfield area). Willing to drive, i'd just prefer not to go to Boston for them....

Or suggestions for good farmers markets until my veggie co-op share starts in mid-June? (which, BTW, might be one of the best things I ever joined....)

  7. Nothing in Mystic itself comes to mind (all of my thoughts were seasonal!), but the 2 casinos have some decent offerings. Overall, Mohegan has better choices (Tuscany - Todd English, Summer Shack - Jasper White), but Foxwoods has a great Sunday champagne brunch. Cost is approx. $40-45 each, but includes all the usual brunch offerings plus an extensive sushi bar (prepared while waiting), lobster tails, and other less typical brunch choices. It's usually pretty crowded so I'd suggest looking into reservations now.

  8. My suspicion is the 1st of May is when they will be re-opening the reservation line, but not the restaurant.

Just went to check the actual paper as I could not find the info on the NYT website.

In the "Off the Menu" section it says Per Se "will reopen May 1 and will begin taking reservations that day at (phone)..."

To me, that certainly means that someone will be dining there that night. I'd be annoyed too if that is in fact the case.

  9. Hmmm, excellent point. Did anyone on here have a date earlier than May 20th?

The woman yesterday did say they would reopen mid-May (can't recall if she said the 20th or not) and the "first few weeks" were already booked, so I should suggest June dates.

I might just call on May 1 and see if I can get a dinner that night.....

  10. Not that I'm complaining given that I'm rescheduled, but it does seem to be a strange process.

Regardless of what date I asked about (sat. or sun. in june), the only time I could have for a party of 2 was 11:30 a.m. Coming from central CT, I'd barely be done with breakfast by the time we had to leave to get there for that!! My "old" reservation was for 12:30pm. She offered to allow me to increase my party size to 4, which I did (and made a friend very happy in the process), and then I could have a 1pm reservation. If the restaurant is only doing one seating per table (or a little more), why 11:30 am? I can only imagine that is the last spot to go, even after a 5:30 dinner reservation....

Also, she did seem hesitant to offer me the June 26th weekend, even when I asked (and got the 11:30 am option again), so I'm curious as to whether they are somehow trying to fit as many people as possible into that first month for some reason. Which, now that I think about it, would also explain why there might only be 11:30 am reservations left....

Now I'm just left to ponder when Keller departs for FL -- before or after my June 12 date????

  11. Does anyone know if the re-scheduling caller will leave a message? Given that we were going to be in the city the date of our original reservation, I gave my cell number and at my cancellation call, gave my home number too. I recall reading that they weren't leaving messages for the cancellation calls.

Just worried that if I'm here at work and not in my office near my cell, I won't get to reschedule.

But a more intriguing question -- if they are re-opening mid-May and will only accept reservations through mid-June for the rescheduled reservations, does that mean only certain people with reservations from the feb-april time will get rescheduled? Or does that mean that mid-feb to mid-march reservations will go in the may-june timeframe, mid-march to mid-april reservations in june-july????

  12. What sort of suggestions are you looking for & where have you already been?

I've heard positive things about Roy's (more consistently about the hawaii locations though) and have thought about trying it myself.

Picasso is my hands down favorite. We were supposed to go to Aqua on the last trip but then realized that one of our party didn't eat seafood and the menu had no non-seafood options. We're planning a trip for Mem. Day weekend and plan on making reservations (which reminds me!) for Sea Blue at MGM.

If you're a meat eater, the NY Times did a review of the various Vegas steakhouses about 2 months ago - Prime and Craftsteak came out on top. We've had 2 dinners at Delmonico and both have been consistently good with deent service.

  13. Fellow members --

First, I've been reading this thread intently since the Per Se fire and finally got my approval e-mail from egullet, so as my first post, I'd like to say thanks for keeping me in the loop. I had a March 28th reservation -- I wish this had been my review instead, but so be iit.

With respect to the PR/customer relations issue, I'd classify myself as mildly annoyed by the lack of information, but recognize this is not necessarily within Per Se's control. My call came in early March, with a statement that the reopening would be April 1 and rescheduling would be within 2 weeks. Well, no call so far, and the cancellations through mid-April show reopening won't be within the next few weeks.

While I don't think there needed to be an excessive amount of PR, one or two announcements, on the originally stated reopening dates, would have been appropriate. I'm left wondering when/if my reservation will be rescheduled.

One option -- why isn't there an update on the FL website? Last time I checked about 2 weeks ago, it just said "closed due to fire" in a slightly more articulate fashion. Why not just put a short update weekly on that site -- there's a section on Per Se and someone could easily update it as info changes.

As for my disappointment being a desire to be "first in line" or trendy, that's not even close. The 1.5 hr drive from central Connecticut is much more realistic for me than Yountville and I was very excited to finally be able to go to Keller's restaurant. It was not about the timing for me & my husband; it was all about Keller and Per Se. If it takes me a year to get another reservation, I'll still go and probably still have the same enthusiasm I have now.

But that doesn't mean I don't want some info to placate me while I wait to find out whether it will be next year by the time I get there.....

Last but not least, a close friend is an engineer interviewing to be the new on-call engineering firm at the Time Warner building. He's seen the plans and apparently post-fire, the wall was opened up and the comparison between the drawing and the wall was not even close..... As expected, the previous contractor & engineer have already been sued. He didn't know when the restaurant would be reopening.
