  1. Tuna mixed with mayo and relish, slice of granny smith apple, cheddar cheese, toasted on an english muffin. Mmmm... that was a favorite lunch when I was younger.
  2. Hot Cross Buns! Hot Cross Buns! One a penny, Two a penny, Hot Cross Buns! If you have no daughters, Pray give them to your sons! One a penny, Two a penny, Hot Cross Buns! I found a recipe More for Lent then Easter though... My family would always make lamb cakes for Easter and for every child's 1st birthday... not sure why though.

    Quail Eggs

I always called that "Eggs in a Frame." That would be cute!
  4. Also in Cincinnati: Ambar India in Clifton, on Ludlow Ave., and they just opened a new branch on Madison Ave. (in O'Bryonville?) called Baba. Same menu, better parking. It has been a while since I've been there but there also was an Indian grocery next to Ambar... not sure about the name though. We have had too many problems with Cumin in the past.
  5. I would chew on my mouth guard during field hockey games. When the ball came to me I would have to quickly swallow what I had been munching on. By the end of the season, there was hardly anything left to protect my mouth!
  6. Although I no longer live in Cincinnati, I will come back to get married in May. My wedding cake is going to be from the Bonbonnerie... I can't wait! I had so much fun tasting cakes there. It is also a wonderful place to go for tea. You get 3 tiers of treats with your tea, from scones to sandwiches to petit fours. Also, many local resturants, such as Dewey's Pizza, offer Bonbonnerie desserts, most notably, their opera cream cake. mmmmmm.....
  7. Thanks Joe H for all of your wisdom. I have only lived in the DC area for a year so I loved to hear about the places that are off the beaten path and do not get attention from the Washington Post. I went to Rocklands in Arlington for the first time last Saturday. Perhaps my expectations were too high but I was not too impressed. I ordered a quarter rack of ribs, which were nice and meaty but not too moist. The mashed potatoes were dry and needed seasoning. My favorite parts of the meal were the macaroni and cheese and the onion rings. The macaroni had a wonderful homemade texture and the coating for the onion rings had more flavor then any I have had before. Hopefully I can visit the Rib Pit soon, since the ribs sound like just what I am looking for.
  8. I read an article in Self magazine a few months ago that discussed the issue of pica. A lot of times it is a result of an eating disorder where a person will eat pebbles, dirt, cigarette butts, chalk, etc., to make themselves feel full. See this site for more info. I think as long as you are still eating something that is a real food product, such as uncooked spaghetti, you don't have pica, you are just a little weird.
  9. Gosh, I know I had a good apple fritter at one of those pick-your-own-apples places just north of Cincy... but that was a few years ago so who knows if it is still there, plus it might just be a Fall thing. I grew up on the East Side, but being from a big Catholic family, I had to leave the city because I was related to EVERYONE!
  10. I love those wings, though they are very different from the traditional Buffalo! Can't wait to try the Vindaloo. Bugsy's in Alexandria makes a good hot wing. Also, when I was in Rehoboth, DE, last year I went to Sir Guy's Restuarant and Pub and they offer a wide range of flavors and spiciness levels (including Scotch Hot for those daredevils out there).
  11. To everyone who lives in Cincinnati and appreciates a good donut: don't ever leave. I now live in the DC metro area and the selection of baked goods is pathetic. Sure, we have artisan breads and napoleons and maybe a few decent places to grab a muffin or scone. But say you want a donut, be it old fashioned, custard filled, or jelly. You will find that your only option for miles is Krispy Kreme. I've had their glazed donuts straight off the conveyor belt, and it was not bad, but there is no place for one-stop shopping like at Buskins or Servatii's or smaller operations like the Mt. Washington Bakery or the Virginia Bakery. To those planning on visiting the Queen City, you must experience this. I once worked at Servattii's, so I am partial to them for Sacher tortes, Oldenburger rye, and cheese pockets (coffee cake). Their donuts are also wonderful, though the best glazed is probably at Buskins. Buskins also offers seasonal specialties such as King cake and pazkis (pronounced poonch-ki, and they are incredible). Another plus for Buskins is that in a city like Cincy where most places close between 10 pm-12am, they are open much later so they are perfect for a late night sweet. Feel free to share more suggestions Cincinnatians... and if you are ever in the DC area, PLEASE bring me a dozen donuts and a 3-way!
  12. Ok, I am going to Rocklands in Arlington on Saturday... I will report back. I am intrigued to see on their web site that you can order whole pigs for parties and stuff. Too bad I didn't find out about this until after the Super Bowl. Rocklands web site

    Grilled Cheese

Back in my poor college days (not too far past) we would put munster cheese between a Hawaiian bread roll and butter and grill it on the George Forman. When you are drunk at 3 am it is a little bit of heaven.
  14. what would you recommend at Rocklands? and is the place off Duke Street in Alexandria open yet? Shudder... I do not like Red Hot and Blue. I got take out from the place in Arlington and was NOT impressed.
  15. Where do you think has the best BBQ in the DC metro area? I know that can mean many different things depending on where you come from originally. I like Capital Q but hate the atmosphere of Old Glory. I want to try the barbeque by my fellow W&L alumn at Rocklands... is his Alexandria location open for business yet?
