    Food & Beer Pairings

A few days prior to the 2002 Real Ale Festival in Chicago, there was a special event called the Real Ale Feast at the Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago (review by Lucy Saunders). While all the pairings were good the final was outstanding. I've never forgotten what a surprise it was to all there. The grand finale was carrot cake with cream cheese frosting served with Dogfish Head 90-Minute IPA.
  2. Moderator's note: This post was merged here from a new thread started by beergirl in the Beer forum: The bill passed today! The limit will be 15% instead of 6%. I believe we can live with that. Now, either the Governor signs it, vetoes it (very unlikely) or it becomes law in 10 days without the signature.

    High Alcohol Beers

Beer itself is not a style as it encompasses all beer styles. Beer style is not defined soley by ABV. ABV is only one characteristic used to define a style and there are many more styles than "malt liquor" or barleywine. A good text for learning about beer styles is the Association of Brewers' (now Brewers' Association) Beer Style Guidellines.

    Hefeweizens

My personal favorite of that list is the Schneider Weisse though it's been a long time since of had any of the others. Why don't you pick up singles of each and try them all before investing in a case or few?

    FYI: Beer on TV

The brochure states April 29, 2005 - October 31, 2005. But as it's only one room at the inn, I would call that pretty limited availability.

    FYI: Beer on TV

"BREWING UP A BUSINESS" author and Dogfish Head Craft Brewery founder Sam Calagione is scheduled to be a guest on "The Early Show" on CBS on Monday, May 30th in the 8:30am (Eastern) hour. I'm about half way through the book Brewing Up a Business and can definitely recommend it. Some other DFH news - You can make a weekend of enjoying Dogfish Head. DFH has teamed with The Inn at Canal Square in Lewes, Delaware, to create a two night weekend package (there is a mention of inquiring about a weekday package at reduced rates). In addition to the two nights accommodation in the Brewmasters’ Suite with DFH soap, shampoo, accessories and DFH beer in a fridge, it includes a guided tour of DFH Brewery in Milton, a Saturday evening boat tour on the S.S. Dogfish from The Inn to Dogfish Head Brewing & Eats Brewpub in Rehoboth with return transportation and a $50 gift certificate to the DFH brewpub. The package for the weekend is $575. Just call The Inn at 302-644-3377 and ask for the Dogfish Head 360° Experience. It sounds like a great weekend. I'd love to go but it isn't fitting the schedule right now.

    Chocolate Bock

How did you know that?! Great beer, not imported to the US.

    Chocolate Bock

I've been told this one is exceptional: New Beer Distributors 167 Chrystie St. New York, New York, 10002-2809 United States phone: (212) 473-8757 There are lots of reviews and information at: http://beeradvocate.com/beerfly/user_reviews/2229/ Cheers!
  11. Great pictures and commentary. It looks like much fun was had by all.
  12. I found the beer quiz to be demeaning to all beer enthusiasts. Beer deserves as much respect as wine. The stereotypes depicted in the quiz only serve to perpetuate the belief that the only use for beer is to become sloppily intoxicated.
  13. A preliminary beer list has been posted at The Beeryard. It's the fifth item in the events list: August Events

    Mead the gueuze

Gueuze is usually an acquired taste. I've not met many who fell in love with a gueuze at first sip. I personally love the more tart/sour ones.

    Mead the gueuze

Mead the Gueuze is a blend of Hannsen's Gueuze (not malt liquor) and Lurgashall Mead. Sounds like some wacky US labeling law caused the "malt liquor" description. I vaguely remember some state, possibly Texas, requiring a description of "malt liquor" if a beer was over 6%. You can find out lots more about the blend at B. United's website: Mead the Gueuze

Here's some information about the ROGUE Sea Otter (not Rouge - sorry I just had to correct that one). There is a lot more information about all the Rogues at Rogue Brews .

  19. Imagine my surprise while flipping through my mother's copy this afternoon when I caught this article: Classy Beer It certainly wasn't a magazine I expected to see such an article in. My only problem with it is the editor's (no doubt) attempt to dumb it down with a slightly condescending headline.
  20. You have to register to read the full text but registration is free. http://www.nytimes.com/2004/06/16/dining/16BEER.html Mr. Oliver's book won the award in Wine, Beer or Spirits category in the 2004 International Association of Culinary Professional's cookbook competition. IACP website EXCERPT When the Right Wine Is a Beer By MARK BITTMAN Published: June 16, 2004 IT'S not that Garrett Oliver doesn't like wine. In fact, he knows more about it than most people, enjoys it often with food, even sings its praises. It's just that he thinks there are times when beer does a better job. "To me," said Mr. Oliver, the brewmaster of Brooklyn Brewery, "beer and wine are both beverages meant to be served with food. And good beer, real beer, often offers things that most wine does not, like carbonation and caramelized and roasted flavors — aspects that sometimes make beer the preferable choice. "And the most wonderful thing about beer is that it has that ability to `reset' your palate. Take cassoulet, for example: Rustic southern French reds are good, but French beer is a much better choice. Cassoulet can be like cement, but beer busts it up and makes it seem so much lighter." 22. The PBR "comeback" is pretty old news. A good article about the phenomenon by Stephen Beaumont can be found at his website, World of Beer. Also enjoyable are the Top 10 Reasons for Drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon.

    Rogue Beer

Beerwise Rogue is about it in Newport. Be sure and try to get over to the brewery across the bay. Along the waterfront there's a great restaurant, The Whale's Tale. We've had dinner and breakfast there and really enjoyed both. For sight-seeing (if you must), the aquarium is really good. Depending on what route you take to Rogue, there are two other brewpubs you shouldn't miss. Siletz Brewing and Public House and Pelican Pub and Brewery. Of course, you choose different routes coming and going and get to both!
  24. Check out the newest update to Dogfish Head Beers. They've added taste descriptions, food pairings, serving glass suggestions and comparable wine style.
