The Urban Fare on Alberni, beside the Shangri-La, will open November 15.

Black Tuna Japanese Bistro upstairs on Denman just north of Davie closed few months ago - it is now a sushi place. Unless I was still dreaming as I was walking to work very early this morning, a Wicked Cafe has opened on Hornby just by Presto Panini. The new Cioffi's will offer take out starting November 15th, according to the Georgia Straight: New French casual on Granville according to the Straight

Over at City Food Rhonda May reports on enRoute's latest choices for top new Canadian restaurants:

Feenie left in a dispute with the owners, Daniel Boulud of NY was brought in. Feenies will reopen as a DB Bistro Moderne next month, supposedly, along with a revamped Lumiere.

Surely that's part of your answer right there - others probably feel the same way about English food as you do about theirs.

Exactly. It seems like such a simplistic statement that I question its value except to the most novice cook. Sally Schneider's book struck me as being pretty simplistic - not wrong, just presenting very simple ideas.

You are welcome. However, I doubt that home refrigerators are the ideal storage enviroment for apples. These comments would apply to commercial apple storage. I wouldn't assume six months. For those commenting on the variable quality of Honeycrisp: Read more here: Post Harvest Quality and Handling of 'Honeycrisp' Apples

Regarding storage, the University of Minnesota Dept of Horticultural Science (where Honeycrisp originated) states: Its origins: Read more here: Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station, University of Minnesota

Yes in the old Saigon place. I've only walked by so I can't comment on food. Interesting. I might have to have a first hand look. ← Is that in the old Saigon space? Hopefully they have improved it. The old place was awful. ←

Vancouver/Western Canada Ingredient Sources Topic

I just got the latest Gourmet Warehouse newsletter and noticed that they are selling Fees bitters. -
Georgia Straight says Savory Coast Cucina Mediterranea on Robson will close October 31. There's a new chocolate place with a Spanish theme (sorry can't remember the name) on Denman replacing the short lived Ko Ko Chocolate Creations. Schnitzelz on Denman is closed. Chau Kitchen and Bar open on 1500 Robson, reportedly Vietnamese fusion. Voya in the Loden Holel on Melville opens on the 18th. This is a long awaited opening so I'm sure they'll be packed from day 1

Full details at Urban Diner ← Looks like La Brasserie may be open as early as next Thursday or Friday. I managed to get a little peek in the door this afternoon - Andrew has a video posted on Urban Diner.

UBC Apple Festival is on again this year October 18 and 19, 11:00 am - 4:00 pm: UBC Apple Festival . As reported above, show up early on Saturday if you want the best selection of apples.

Thanks for letting us know Andrew. I'm sorry that you are leaving EAT but looking forward to hearing about your new project.

Yes, I agree.

Nope, my expectations would be pretty low for such an event. Your description does not surprise me at all.

I don't know there's been 146 views already. I agree that CIbo is very good and I like the beer, wine and spirits store on premises of the hotel.

The October Vancouver Magazine feature a story on 101 things to taste before you die, all local. In their own words: Here's the link to the story: 101 Things to Taste Before You Die What would you add to the list?

September EAT is on the streets: The start of a series on Seattle. This month Shelora Sheldan and Treve Ring tell us their favourite spots "Victoria's Culinary DNA" (Jamie Maw lives!). Gillie Easton starts her research at the Vancouver Island Health Authority. In the beginning - Sooke Harbour House - really?!? Nothing new here. Andrew Morrison reports on Vancouver: Trattoria Italian Kitchen, The Calling, Beach House, Revel, Moderne Burger. Andrew on the quest for a good schnitzel. The opening line: "With a small German population, Vancouver has never been much of schnitzel town". Well Robsonstrasse is long gone, but not quite "never". See Victoria's Culinary DNA above - it all started 30 years ago. Apple recipes from Nathan Fong. A comforting fall country dinner - recipes. Okanagan road trip to visit the usual suspects. Am I the only person who finds most Okanagan winery architecture horrific? No one ever seems to write anything critical about the Okanagan. I think there's lots of ugliness and nastiness going on. Where are the sustainability and heritage police when you need them? Lots of other content.

Finest at Sea on Granville Island is finally open, or so it appears. They don't have hours posted and the staff inside aren't friendly enough to actually talk to the people looking in the window at 10:30 on a Sunday morning but there's food on the shelves and in the coolers. Cassis Bistro reopened recently after a renovation, not sure if the menu has changed. At Urban Diner Andrew Morrison reports a new restaurant called La Brasserie will open on Davie near Thurlow: Full details at Urban Diner

The Best Destination Cooking Schools in the World
barolo replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
Gourmet did an edition on cooking schools a few months ago. Here's a link from the gourmet.com website: Gourmet guide to cooking schools I can't judge how good this list is, but it's a starting point for discussion. -
Could it be Cortes Gold? I found this in a November 2004 Don Genova Pacific Palate post (here ):
