  1. In a couple months I'm going to need to have a dinner for about 20 out of town family members in DC. Does anyone have any suggestions for places that might have a private room/area? Food quality, of course, is the main concern. I don't think any cuisine is out of bounds, though I'd like to make the reservation at a place that's not too crazily loud. As far as price goes, most places are within our range. I don't want to go anywhere super-formal however. The atmosphere should be somewhat relaxed, though everyone else there should not be wearing shorts and t-shirts. Most people will be staying around Georgetown or Dupont, so places around there are a plus.
  2. I am also an ex-Jew (not religious, but still love the food). I go to Eastern Market to get poppy hamentashen all the time - they are yummy! They have prune, cherry etc. too. Get the at the stall indoors at the south end of the market. They also sell good red horseradish.
  3. I ended up taking them to Matchbox around 10. It was good for catching up (we got a cozy booth) and their pizza's always good. I love their Fire and Smoke pizza.
  4. Sorry! Specifics: Location: Downtown DC works best Ethnic Food: Any Entree Price: $15 to $20

    Latkes - the Topic!

I'm a traditionalist about my latkes. Proportions: 1 large potato 1 medium to small onion 2 eggs a couple heaping tablespoons of flour Of course I always multiply this by at least three. And I love them with applesauce. But I'm dying to try this non-traditional recipe: Potato-Apple Pancakes with Smoked Salmon and Horseradish

    Latkes - the Topic!

'Tis true. In yesterday's NY Times: Ruthie & Gussie's Traditional Potato Pancake Batter. I agree - that is just wrong.
  7. I'm going to dinner with my cousins from San Francisco tomorrow night - there will be 6 of us. I'm looking for a place that won't be so loud that we won't be able to hear each other because we need to do a lot of catching up. Also looking for a place that isn't crazy expensive, but isn't cheap. Mid-range is the word I'm looking for. Cozy with yummy food (and libations). Any suggestions?
  8. Oh, also Pacific Cafe on Pennsylvania Ave (near Fragers) is okay. I've had pho and spring rolls which were good (for the hill).
  9. I have to agree - I live on the hill and Montemartre is one of the only places we feel like we'll consistently get good food. I love the mussels, and the liver, if you're into bivalves and organ meat.
  10. They've also been leaving all the doors open - people have told me it's ridiculously freezing in there. And I was so excited for a new restaurant in my hood...
  11. I went to Logan Tavern on Halloween. The food was affordable, and good. My entree was just okay (pasta with scallops) but we all shared the ginger calamari appetizer which I thought was really good. Garlicky, sweet and crispy.
