  1. put me down for 2 total (me and the wife). thanks for setting this up.
  2. schedule permitting, I'm in. might want to start a new thread.
  3. Sarcones: You need to go to ninth street to buy their bread (try their hoagies, awesome, from their corner deli). Also try their tomato pie and pepperoni bread. Amoroso's: Servicable rolls that are better than most outside of Philly. In Philly, you can do much better. You can buy them at many places, including supermarkets, in plastic bags. The best bread is served in brown paper bags. That must be a rule. There is no comparison between the two. None. Try Philip's Steaks. 23rd and Passyunk. On the other side of the tracks from Pat's and Geno's. Consistent quality. Open 24 hours. No lines. Right off the Schuylkill. Holly needs to get them on his site.
  4. Best response I have ever gotten to the inevitable improperly-cooked steak: Sam and Harry's in town a few years back. Porterhouse was more than medium rare. The server took it away and the restaurant manager brought me a order of shrimp cocktail, unsolicited, to occupy my taste buds while I waited. By that point, the wait was well worth it.
  5. my thread killing skills are unbelievable, aren't they?
  6. Timely article and worth a look. Saveur 2218 Wisconsin Ave. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/artic...-2004Apr15.html In the interest of full disclosure, I am good friends with Gene Sohn and Ed Jacobson, the owners.
  7. I'd love to make it, but I'm out of town that day.

  9. sorry for the delay in getting back to you. charlie's is on gude, east of 355, about 2 miles or so on the left. it's in a shopping center. it's pretty good, but remember, you're not in kansas city. good luck.
  10. how many steakhouses can you fit on the head of a pin? just wondering....
  11. il pizzico charlie's bbq on gude (better than o'briens imo)
  12. No one said it wasn't a great business model. I do recall at our dinner. It was expensive ($900 or so for 6 I think). I didn't pay. But we did go all out (expensive wine...). I'm sure they have a menu to look at; they didn't offer and we didn't ask. There was a showmanship aspect to the whole thing, I must admit. As a far as the caesar is concerned, I have never seen it done that way before or since.
  13. There is a place in Wilmington, DE. I haven't been there in 10 years. Italian joint. Make it at the table. In fact, I remember the guy throwing the raw egg in the bowl from across the room (I'm not kidding), and making it. I also remember the "Human Menu", or something to that effect. The owner, I'm guessing, asked you questions (meat, pasta, etc.) and then followed up with more questions, and more questions, to the point where we had your order. I want to say Vincent's, but I could be wrong. Anyone else heard of it? Upon further research, it is Vincente's. check this out: http://www.restaurants.com/US/ReviewPage.a...3026525142&Pg=1 give this place a try. the "walking menu" is still there, aparently.
  14. That would be the same Gene Sohn. He's come a long way, hasn't he?
  15. You could give Saveur a try at 2218 Wisconsin. In the interest of full disclosure, I am friends with the owners. Having said that, if you are talking about restaurants on this stretch of Wisconsin, this one deserves a mention. I was there recently, and they are in the process of expanding their bar (my vote is that they feature champagnes prominently). Nice ambience, and very good food (try the expanded hors d'oevres menu, which can make a meal in itself). We go to Bourbon frequently and while it is a great bar in a part of the city that needs a great bar, it's just that. Savuer hopes to be a great bar, but is already a great restaurant. So, go a little south from Bourbon and let me know how you find the experience. Just a thought. Thanks.
  16. You might want to try the cannoli from Varallo's at 10th and Morris. Outstanding.
  17. Sorry all. My wife just reminded me of a wedding that we have in Jersey on the 22nd. We're not going to be able to make it. I hope you have a good time and will be looking out for future events.
  18. Try the Bordeaux Room at Saveur on Wisconsin Avenue in Glover Park. Very intimate room and great French cuisine at reasonable prices. My good friend Gene Sohn will work with you to come with a menu to meet your needs. Saveur - 2218 Wisconsin Avenue - (202) 333-5885 Good luck.
  19. I would love to take my wife and be part of this event, assuming newbies are permitted. I've heard nothing but good things about this restaurant. Thanks.
