  1. Whew!!! I was so nervous when I posted my review of Globe. I am so glad others are finding the food as good as I did. It will make me much more confidfent about posting in the future. Meantime we are going to see Oliver this month and will definitely be eating at Globe
  2. Well!!! My wife and I just had dinner at Globe Restaurant, and we are smitten. A quiet Thursday in March and as we arrived right at 5 no one was there yet. without looking at the menu's we simply asked to have the chef start sending food out, with help from staff suggesting at least 4 dishes to share before desert. First off was small cups of dashi, a bonito broth with noodles and veg. Delicous, very simple, yet tasty. Next up came a venison carpaccio with soy cured foie gras crispy shallots and peanuts. This was GREAT. The gamey taste of the venison, combinesd with the silky foie gras, and some mint and chive oil, with tiny pieces of peanut for texture made this dish so awesome!!! On to Lobster ceviche with sweet red pepper and chipotle foam. Again wow!! The lobster gave such a clean taste of the ocean, with the fresh taste of red pepper and a little cilantro, followed a few seconds later with the mild burn of the chipotle. Hard to describe in words . . but a great taste. Next up came artic char with potato pancakes ( I forget what the sauce was). This was my wife's favourite, I found it good but a little plain (not a big fish fan . . She went on and on about how much she liked it. At this point the server asked how we were doing and I felt like we could use one more dish so I asked for one of the vegetable dishes. We had bok choy with oyster mushrooms braised in soy. Great taste , . . nothing overbearing letting the vegetables stand on their own. Desert was AMAZING!!!!! My wife had "The Egg" Chocolate pot du creme topped with caramel foam and madon fleur du sel. This was served in a real egg shell like a hard boiled egg!! The caramel and fleur du sel went together like magic and then you could scoop the chocolate out of the egg. My wife was in heaven. I have the Sticky toffee pudding with ice cream. The server gladly arranged to substitute the vanilla ice cream for cinnamon ice cream. all the ice creams are homemade btw. This dish was just soooo good. Flavor, so old school and so satisfying!!! OK So we get the bill . . My wife had a glass of wine, and I had coffee. $75!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I will admit the portions are small, and those with big appetities will want a couple of more dishes but . . we were definitely eating off the top end of the menu. I love food, but I have no use for pretention. This restaurant is all about the food. And what they are offereng for the price point is so darn impressive. We have not been eating out much lately, but I have a feeling we will be driving to Stratford often now!!
  3. I was a pusateris on Avenue road tonight and I found some harissa in a tube Havent tried it yet but it was reasonably priced and pusateris doesnt usually stock stuff they havent tasted so it is probably good for a pre made product. You can find it with the sauces . . NOT with the spices. It is located by the prepared salads and dishes
  4. I have a bottle of B&B liquer i used to make poached pears last fall. Is it still good this fall?
  5. I disagree!! Although there are many fine restaurants in Kingston . . when you find a gem like Casa you want to enjoy it as much as you can in the short time you are there. Also eating out as a tourist can be hit or miss at the best of times so I know when my wife and I HIT . . we usually stick with it as well
  6. Ok i realize I started this post a year ago but here is my report on dining in Kingston. I have had to spend time in Kingston in April each of the last two years for work, we just got back tonight from this years trip so here is what I found the past two years. First and foremost, Casa Dominico. This place is UNBELIEVABLY good for the price point. We ate there last year and this year and I can tell you these guys are making some seriously good food. From the complimentary spiced olive oil and bread to the deserts this is great food, but the mains are just so good I can't even put it in words. The price is reasonable, the staff friendly and knowledgable, the ambiance great!! I just can't say enough good things about this restaurant. We also ate quite a few late meals at woodenheads pizza and again for the price point this is good food (although it was a little loud for us. We also really loved Morrison's diner for breakfast! This place is a real diner!! I was a little dissapointed with chez piggy and with pan chacho bakery, everything at these places was fine . . but certainly nothing special. If you do have the chance check out casa dominco though . . you definitely wont regret it
  7. my wife and I will be staying in vancouver at UBC for a week at the end of may. We are looking for good food near the university. Anything under $100 without liquor for two is in play . . . .but we don't mind good food in 30-50 dollar range either. We can take taxi's or buses to get to the restaurants as well. Also how far is whole foods from the university and is it an easy trip on public transit?
  8. can anyone suggest where to park when going to St. Lawrence market

  11. thanks for the primer. Where do you go oil hunting??? Can you recommend a particular fruity oil brand you prefer?
  12. While I in no way claim to be an olive oil expert, Pusateri's on avenue road in toronto has an absolutely HUGE selection of olive oils, ranging from reasonably priced to waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of my league. They have a website at pusateri's.com For the full selection make sure you go to the avenue road location as the yorkville one doesnt carry everything
  13. My limited experience with sushi has led me to Edo on Eglington West where I have always enjoyed their creative maki rolls. I was wondering which other Japanese Resto's in the toronto area have great and creative maki and sushi? Any suggestions?
  14. Thanks for the quick response! Tribute is the only one of those resaurants I had heard of, and the thread you directed me too certainly makes it sound like somewhere we will try to go :) My wife is playing in a backgammon tournament so Friday and saturday there is only about 1.5 hours for dinner, but Thursday or Sunday evening we have as long as we need.
  15. We will be staying at the Novi Sheraton for a few days in early July. Looking for good quality food (not to pretentious though). Anyone have any suggestions. We dont mind driving up to 30 minutes for a good meal.
  16. LOL . . He doesn't even HAVE CABLE!!!! Big antenna . . .4 channels . . . . 2 french!!!!
  17. My brother from the far north of Ontario . . is making his once per decade trip to the south. Since he never gets out we told my mom we would take him anywhere he wants go . . . . Of course he picked Medieval Times. $60.00 per person . . for goodness sakes we could have trust me at JOV for that!!!! Anyways I was just wondering if anyone has been and if they can let us know what to expect in terms of food quality? WHOOPS sorry for poor spelling in title . .. .can't edit it either unfortunately
  18. Wow . . I love this message board!!!!! Thanks for all the great replies!!! We now have a ton of great ideas about where we can eat this weekend!!!
  19. I need to travel to Kingston for work for the next 5 days. My wife and I will be able to eat a good dinner out on Thurs. and Saturday . . . and need informal places to eat lunches and late dinners (after 10 PM) on other days. We like good food that is not overly pretentious. So far our plan includes le chein noir for dinner on Thursday. I have also read good things about woodenheads as a laght night informal dinner spot. Any other suggstions will be much appreciated.
  20. I agree . . .thank you for your awesome review. It describes your meal exactly as I would if I were reviewing a restaurant for the site. I think I am in the silent majority of readers on this site who are food LOVERS rather than food snobs. I also think the rude respnse should be ignored!!
  21. hmmmmmmmmmmmmm . . This sounds cooooooooooool!
  22. I can say only good things about both Down the Street and Woolfy's in terms of value for money and good quality food. We eat at Woolfy's at least once a year, and the food while not overly fancy is always prepared perfectly, and I do mean perfectly. When he can't get top notch ingredients for menu items he simply won't make them. He uses local ingredients as much as possible. Desserts are good. You simply cannot get a bad meal at Woolfy's Down the Street is a fresh funky casual bar, with upscale bar food of very good quality. The frites with aioli are always a treat, and the lunch and dinner menu's have plenty of variety at a very reasonable price. Desserts are good here too. This isalso a fun place to people watch. We also like York Street sandwiches for a quick lunch and I agree completely with your opinion of bijou.
  23. The measure of a great chef should not be his ability to be outrageous but his ability to prepare food well. One of France's top chefs once said in an interview he hires chefs for his resaurant based on them preparing him a plain omelette, the reasoning being if you can make a simple dish perefectly then complicated dishes will be easy. Elvis Drennan of David's Bistro in London Ontario is a young chef who is doing an excellent job. He has worked his way from dishwasher to chef in a mid price bistro in a notoriously conservative city. He cooks bistro food and does it to perfection. Every detail of the execution is spot on every time I eat there. Chef's in these restaurants aren't relying on sexy ingredients to take the load off of them and as such the spotlight is much more on the basics of cooking. Just my opinion but maybe you are looking in the wrong places for the best young chef's. I know I had flank steak the other night that was AWESOME and that is no easy task.
