  1. Nolafoodie, Thanks so much for the appreciative comment! And next time I'm in your wonderful city, I'd be grateful for any tips or tour you'd be willing to give, and likewise happy to treat for dinner! Thanks to everyone for all the appreciation and enthusiasm you've shown. I honestly can't think of when I've had so much fun! To wrap things up officially, the free-range veal has gone into the toaster over, having been thoroughly rubbed with minced garlic, dried marjoram, dried basil and S&P! Thanks again all, and special thanks to misgabi for tagging me! See 'ya round eGullet, Squeat Edit: typo
  2. For those who wisely don't read my blog: I made French Toast with Acme ciabatta for brunch. I ate it topped with the apricot jam/ orange marmalade mix. It was seriously good FT, and I made it in a cheapo toaster! Those bags are sheer genius. Loving my new toys, Squeat
  3. Okay, I hope I'm not stepping on toes here, although Cusina seems to be more than holding her own in her blog. (Those brats sound awesome!) But misgabi did tell me in a PM that I had to continue to blog through the end of today. (Is this true, or is she trying to trick me?) Anyway I have to tell you that I made French Toast with Acme ciabatta for brunch. I ate it topped with the apricot jam/orange marmalade mix. It was seriously good FT, and I made it in a cheapo toaster! Those bags are sheer genius. Loving my new toys, Squeat Edit: Left out a whole word!
  4. Personally, I'd be fascinated to read a blog from someone who eats pao de queijo and gherkins for dinner! Are you Brazilian? Beats the pants off hot dogs for lunch and a dinner of nothing! But I suppose we will have to be satisfied with your always welcome comments on others' blogs. Thanks for playing, NOT! (kidding!) Squeat
  5. Got your PM, and answered encouraging you to go ahead and blog anyway, but if Cusina is willing to pass the baton to you for Thanksgiving, I think that's a great idea -- and will ensure she doesn't have to worry about who's next! What do people think? Squeat (About to go make French Toast in Magic Bags.)
  6. Great start, Cusina! Can't wait to look inside your Grandmother's recipe box. Have fun with the pumpkin muffins and the blog! Cheers, Squeat
  7. I have tagged Cusina, who has graciously accepted the baton.
  8. Good luck, Cusina, and thanks for taking up the challenge! You'll I have a blast, really. I did! And don't worry, I'm sure many folks, as well as myself, will want to hear about coping with Wisconsin late fall/early winter! (I spent part of my childhood in northern Michigan; 'twill bring back memories, I'm sure!) Cheers, Squeat
  9. NOT IT! And exactly how many guys do you know named elyse? Well, not everyone in this forum uses his or her real name. (My own dear mother -- rest her soul -- for example, would never have been so cruel as to saddle me with 'Squeat'.) And, not to perpetuate any Jeb-Bush-style stereotypes, but I DO live in San Francisco -- and you used to -- so it was entirely possible! The honest answer, though, is none, party-pooper! Squeat PS I have been informed by misgabi at the 11th hour that I am expected to blog through today as well, so I will post later about further adventures with magic bags and free-range veal. Edited to add: After that it is up to someone else to pick up the ball!
  10. Yes, misgabi, Distilled snacks from Scotland! (It is exactly midnight.) Cheers, Squeat
  11. Okay, then. I'm outing everybody! I have officially tagged all of the following: elyse (she or he won't play) GG Mora (haven't heard... lives in Vermont and could really be interesting) Cusina (just tagged, so am willing to give a break, but very curious.) There. I have tagged. I was tagged. I did my duty and had a hell of a lot of fun. If I have engendered three blogs, all the better! Squeat
  12. Well, the first person flatly refused, and mentioned they had been tagged before to no avail, so I thought I would give up on them and try again. I am hopeful that the next person to whom I have tried to pass the baton will step up to the plate (to mix sports metaphors), because I am truly interested in hearing from him or her. If I have completely stalled the food blog, I do apologize. Time will tell. I stepped up in a sense of fair play, and I didn't even have a stove, so come on, people! Squeat
  13. Okay, these Magic Bags are going to change my life. I made smoked ham and swiss on a Kaiser roll with mayo and dijon, and they came out great! It's like it turns a (cheapo) toaster into a fancy sandwich press! Many thanks to Jason and Rachel Perlow for turning me on to these! Folks, this blog has been one of the most fun experiences I have had in a long time, and thanks to all for playing along! I've been trying to line up the next blog, but have met with one outright rejection so far, and have heard nothing from the next person I tried. Hopefully we'll all have a blog to entertain us this coming week! Cheers, Squeat
  14. Hey San Francisco has been among the hardest hit by the recent depression -- oh, I'm sorry 'recession' -- but the rents have not come down, and apparently neither have toaster prices!
  15. Okay, the Perlows have not been leading us on. These things are the shiznit! My first experiment was Virginia ham and swiss with mayo and dijon on a Kaiser. Perfect! These bags are obviously going to revolutionize Squeat cuisine. Tomorrow I'm thinking french toast. Order yours now, folks! Sorry no pictures -- no digicam. Happy Squeat PS I did have a little glitch in that the Kaisers were an extremely tight fit into the bags. Since I had buttered the rolls on the outside, when I finally wedged it in there I had a buttery mess of a Magic Bag. Easily solved, however, with a damp rag and some paper towels. Edit: Really it should be "Perlows", not "Perlow's".
  16. Breaking news! My Toast-n-Serve Magic Bags arrived in today's mail. I ran out and bought a toaster. Now I'm off to buy sandwich supplies. The veal can wait until tomorrow. This is too much fun! A Very Excited Squeat
  17. Mine arrived in today's mail! Hurray! I'm so excited. I just ran out to Ace Hardware and bought the cheapest toaster they had, the Toastmaster T2000BC Extra Wide Slot Toaster at $15.99. Off to the supermarket for supplies. Will keep you posted. Cheers, Squeat
  18. Okay, lunch today is more like a snack. I'm sitting here munching on some of the delicious Major Farms Vermont Shepherd cheese with some olive oil crackers and a few kalamata olives Squeat
  19. Okay, back from the FM, where I had a cup of coffee and an apple turnover from Frog Hollow Farms. I looked for the Downtown Bakery stand (I love their pastries) but they had moved it again! I didn't find it until later. I bought: A butternut squash which I'll roast in the toaster oven. Bates & Schmitt homemade Seville Orange Marmalade and B&S homemade Apricot Jam for making my spread mix, which I had run out of. Major Farms Vermont Shepherd Cheese (Thanks GG Mora for the suggestion -- this stuff is awesome!). An Acme ciabatta. A 3-pound veal roast from Golden Gate meats for $15.04. Now I'm watching cooking shows on television (for some reason the America's Test Kitchen guy is playing the banjo!), and flipping through cookbooks looking for ideas for the roast. In case anyone was wondering, still no oven! We're aiming for delivery next weekend. I'll let you know. Cheers, Squeat PS elyse, I checked and we were right! "La Cumbre"! Edited to add that the veal is free-range veal, the only kind I buy.

  21. Stone, please enlighten an ignorant newbie as to what you've said before and will and will not say again? Much appreciated, Squeat
  22. I'm certainly no expert on Vietnamese cuisine, but I remember being grossly underwhelmed by the food at Slanted Door at its original location in the Mission. Nothing I tasted impressed me, and at that location I remember almost nothing but the echoing din of the unbelievably loud dining room! I hope that the ambience is better in the new location (or wherever they plan to go). I have (a little) hope that the food may in time become more memorable. Squeat
  23. I had to ask a coworker to help me figure it out.
  24. I haven't had these since I was a kid (no pun intended -- oh, alright: pun intended). Lamb spare-ribs are not common in the south (Varmint will correct me if I'm wrong, I hope), but as we moved around the country my mother discovered them. She almost always cooked them under the broiler. Squeat
  25. I'll have to check over the weekend, but I always thought the name was La Cumbre! I can't even pretend to speak Spanish, however. Dinner was decided when I discovered three more slices of the Nueske's Applewood Smoked Bacon in the fridge. I know I'm surpassing recommended dates for storing meats, but it smelled fine. I'm roasting it now and plan to eat it with some arugula and Point Reyes Blue cheese on toasted Acme ciabatta. Then one tired Squeat is going to bed. PS I'm trying to think of whom I should tag next. It's a bit of a challenge to seek someone out who hasn't already blogged! For instance, it's awfully tempting to tag maggiethecat again, because I'm sure she could entertain with double dactyls or perhaps, my favorite, terza rima! Will ponder... Squeat
