  1. Can that letter be found in archives? I had heard about it for years but never actually read it. Bryan Miller extolled the virtues of the QG from day 1 until it closed through all its incarnations, 2nd Ave., AT&T, Sony Plaza, Casual QG. As much flack as the QG, and Barry, got, they have proven themselves to have been way ahead of the times. Mr. Miller always saw that I thought...
  2. that makes sense. i think you are right on about the Per Se/QG comparison also. we await the review...
  3. what about Bouchee or the new Auberge Carmel? Both are projects of David Fink, the former GM of the Highlands Inn.
  4. My understanding was that the Quilted Giraffe closed its doors for good on December 31st, 1992. Is that possible if the title of the book read "93-94"
  5. Chef Phillip is very talented. He helped us out in the kitchen at Manresa for several months while he was waiting for the right opportunity. I think he will do very well there.
  6. Joe Schirmer of Dirty Girl Produce-Fan Tan Farms. Top quality produce at Farmer's markets from the Ferry Building to Santa Cruz. French filet beans, cannellinis, carrots, cippolini ionions, radishes, dry farmed tomatoes... An all round great guy and awesome surfer... He is one of the featured purveyors in the food section this sunday in the NY Times Sunday magazine. Check it out... Go Joe...

  8. Has anyone tried Tartare yet? The menu is really interesting...
  9. has anyone been to Michael Mina now that they have been open a month?
  10. Well, We are not in Santa Cruz but not far away. You do have to make that twisty drive over 17 in the mountains... Still it is about 30 minutes door to door...
  11. In Santa Cruz: Oswald Bistro (downtown) great food. Soif Wine Bar (downtown), new chef, great small plates, great wine list fairly priced Avanti (Mission St) simple and good menu. emphasis on organics and local. great wine list Don't forget Manresa in nearby Los Gatos...
  12. i have secured a reservation at ADNY at the end of September. the reservationist on the phone was very upbeat in describing the new Fall menu that will then be in place, and how excited the staff was looking forward to it. My benchmark NYC meal was ADNY in January 2001 so I look forward to it with much anticipation...
  13. It is actually one of the true glories about SJ and the South Bay. The quality is outstanding in all of these markets and best of all, a vibrant community that supports it. Cantonese Delight has wonderful dim sum near the Whole Foods on Stevens Creek and de Anza in Cupertino...
  14. Sorry about your experience at Soif, GG. They have a new chef now. I have always preferred sitting at the bar at Soif where you can interact with the owners who are usually pouring.
  15. I would add Soif Wine Bar to the list of recommended restaurants in Santa Cruz. An ambitious wine by the glass program passionately run by Hugh at the bar and a small but delicious changing menu to complement said wines. Oswald has always been a delight and a great favorite.
  16. today i noticed the name of the new chef at trio was announced on their website. his name is Dale Levitski from Blackbird.
  17. Bravo! A joy and pleasure to read...
