  1. Haleem is grains and beef and spices all cooked together and then kind of whipped up. It looked like runny refried beans (I know this sounds gross, but it was really good!) but it packs a spicy punch and has a nice, smooth texture.

I got it off of the buffet at the Pakistani place on 23rd- Mogul Grill- and had to ask what it was before I took it because it was right next to the "hot and spicy beef feet" and I don't care for innards or feets. But the haleem is good! It seems to be one of the weekend specials at a lot of the kabob-type places.

  2. I've not stayed at El Convento, but friends of mine did a few years ago and thought it was superb. I have stayed at the Wyndham Old San Juan (right across from the cruise ship piers) and it was nice as well. You could easily walk from the Wyndham to all the sights in Old SJ- and go eat at La Bombanera. Yummy.

  3. Darien, GA- I have to ask why

But if you do stop there, Archie's in downtown Darien is an institution- try the fried catfish. A bit south of Darien is Brunswick, GA. There, try the GA Pig barbecue (just off the interstate- exit 29 I think) for lunch or Cargo Portside Grill in downtown Brunswick for a nice dinner.

Further south still is St. Mary's, GA (interstate exit 3)- home of St. Mary's Seafood for fried seafood and sweet tea.

Also, I have friends who enjoy Pelican Point restaurant in Midway, GA but I have not been.

  4. As someone who grew up on Sprayberry's and visited on a trip home over the holidays, I have to say that they are not what they used to be

I had a chopped pork sandwich and brunswick stew at the original location (not the one by the interstate). The pork was dry, the sauce tasted of nothing but vinegar and the stew was bland. My husband had unbearably greasy onion rings. Service was pleasant, but I no longer dream of Sprayberry's.

  5. Well, the bar at Palena did not disappoint. We had the plate o' fries, noodles with duck and the roast chicken and shared a bottle of house red, which is a cabernet/merlot blend from France.

Now, I'm from the south and I thought I had consumed every possible fried food, including pickles and twinkies. But the fried lemons! They're so good! We asked if they did anything to the lemon slices before frying, and the waitress came back with "yes, but they won't tell what." So now my husband is planning on spending Christmas vacation in the kitchen trying to fry lemons. I think there's some salt and some oven-drying involved....

The noodles with duck were just ok. The noodles were nice and firm, but the duck ragout wasn't as good as the one I ate at a little trattoria in Tuscany.. oh well, it was fine for $9.

The chicken  was the best chicken I have ever had and well worth the 40 minute wait (which, with a plate of fries and a bottle of wine did not seem that long)

All in all, very nice for my celebration. If I lived in that neighborhood, I would go often, and even driving in from Arlington, we'll be back!

We saw many hot dogs being consumed and they looked very yummy, as did the burger.

  6. I got a very nice e-mail from Anne at Rocklands. As a result of my complaint/suggestion, they're going to update their web site to reflect the need for ID. I think that they are handling this very well.

She also said she'll mail me a gift certificate, so I will try the barbecue and report back!

Job well done in the customer service department, Rocklands.

  7. And I was sober! What I love about Arlington is how there are something like 10 23rd streets in the county. Easy to get lost, but I like living here anyway.

Annette's isn't very metro-friendly. It's in a shopping center on Van Dorn Street. I think you could go to Van Dorn Metro and take a bus if you want.

  8. I wasn't mad about being carded- I just felt the situation was ridiculous. I had no idea that Rocklands was in a bar. We checked out their website before heading out and there was no indication of it. And obviously it's not in my 'hood since I thought it was in Clarendon (Wilson Blvd. is all the same to me anyway :raz: )

    Regardless, live and learn.

I'm not fond of Annette's. The times I've eaten there the meat seemed "wet" to me. Not what this Georgia girl likes in a bbq. Guess I'll have to wait until I go home for a visit to eat some good ol' pulled pork.

  9. I tried to eat at Rocklands in Clarendon last night. I wanted to take my husband out to celebrate a career milestone and he wanted ribs. We got to Rocklands, walked in the door and were asked for ID. I had mine, but he had left his at home. We were told to leave. I asked "Can't we just eat?" And was told no. We are both 28 and don't look young. What gives? I can see the need to be careful, especially since the place is so close to GMU, but I have never been turned away from eating at a restaurant because I didn't have ID. NOT a good way to to business. A happy customer tells two or three people. An unhappy customer tells everyone they know....

So I guess I'll never find out if Rocklands is any good, because I'm not going back.
