German Xmas Beverage

Hi guys~

when I was a kid, my late mom (who had German relatives growing up in the 1930s) made a concoction she referred to as (sp?) Fett/Fete/Pfhett Schnapps.

To the best of my recollection, it contained melted caramels, chocolate, possibly butter, and alcohol of some sort.

It was served almost painfully hot, but it was goooood. My sister is the only one of the three of us that saw ma make it, and her version differs from my pop's.

Im inclined to try and *wing it* this year, but Im hoping someone in this vast encyclopedia of culinary knowledge will be familiar with it and be able to give some guidelines as to:

light dark or combined caramels?

milk/semisweet chocolate?

butter: yea/nay?

what kinda booze?

and

proportions to all the above?
