  1. Obrigado!! We are also trying to know what potential vendors think about our ideas.. Hopefully we'll get some insights on the more commercial side of things Thank you gfron1, when you toast seeds or nuts, do you have any issues with the method you currently use that you'd like to see solved? The attachment idea is indeed a good one, could simplify things Thank you Lisa! When i toast my seeds i usually grind them after with a stone tool. I find it more rewarding and less messy Any problems you sometimes have with your method you would definitely like to avoid? Thanks Deryn! Incredible reply, you made me think about a lot of other ideas regarding our project! Do you usually roast spices? While you're doing so, do you find yourself having some issues you'd like to avoid? Thanks Smithy! The West Bend popper would be our competitor; It has some issues with the stirring mechanism, as for certain sizes of nuts or seeds, it just rotates them around, not really flipping them. I also read some models leave traces of Teflon on the food The popcorn poppers work fine as a roaster for nuts and seeds (those that have a sort of pop corn chimney don't though). Thanks Thanks JoNorvelleWalker! Ok the grinder function is kind of a must i see i have a sister that is REALLY into peanut butter (she makes her own and sells it) may check with her about the what specs we'd have to include in order to achieve such consistency. Thanks Oh i always strive for fancy! I'm thinking modular and how to use some heat and motion sources that already present in a kitchen in a more intelligent way! Thanks! I think halogen would provide enough heat; don't know if the startup time makes it for a quick roasting cycle though.. Thank you dcarch, Yes that's the problem with grinding, you always get some heat onto whatever you're grinding.. It would have to be something that minimizes the amount of time a blade is in contact with the nuts, and is refrigerated. Hi everybody, sorry for my absence in the past days (it was a tough week).. Our concept is evolving greatly thanks to your kind efforts to help us get there!! Thanks! Probably in a few days I'll have to make a decision on what our product will look like, and so I'll come to this thread a little less from that point on (i am going to thank you the best way i can ). Meanwhile I'd like to ask you one last question that is very important to us: For those who usually roast seeds or nuts, what issues do you currently have that you would very much like to see solved?
  2. Those are percebas!!! That is so delicious! Porto food culture is a.. little dark (like the Porto tripe dish or the heart attack inducing francesinha). I do not think it is as enlightened as say in Alentejo or in the inland. Did you visit Porto in the summer? (i guess so from the pictures) That is the fish on the grill season and sardines season, which are in my opinion worth the visit Cozido is a real winner and probably a flagship of Portuguese dishes! Though question.. I can't say i have a favorite, but i may have 4 or 5 i can't live without: octopus pataniscas, secretos de porco preto, punhetas de bacalhau (punhetas is a really rude word, so be careful, but the dish exists!), probably all soups and fish dishes from Alentejo, and basically anything my mother cooks when she's in the zone!! Thanks for visiting our culture its really nice to have visitors around!
  3. Thanks! Well kind of, but it would have a lot simpler and cheaper as well! I read that mixers that have rotating elements would fail to move nuts and seeds enough that would roast on all sides; maybe this device has the same flaws for that purpose? Thanks! To have a higher degree of control you would need a link to an app. That is feasible though. And it would function for just the adequate amount of time! A way to make it easily washable would be to not have any rotating elements on the heating place and have that plate shake a little just for the sake of moving nuts seeds and spices around! Multi functional integration (like grinding) would be a BIG challenge.. Thank you andiesenji! I do have in mind that this could be useful for someone that has no more room in the stove top; it could be interesting on a brunch place, where every table could have this so costumers could toast their lets say granola or muesli mix at the time of consumption. That skillet sounds very very interesting. Would you say that an automated motion capability would be a good plus for that? I find that most coffee roasters are very expensive; i may want to keep my product project under that cost, but i still may be competing with that (lets see..). Thank you Diana! No negative feedback is truly negative At this point i should also state that this class is also about the process of gathering various opinions and to be able to engage others for valuable feedback, so there's no way i can't succeed! Me and my team may actually build a prototype, but I'm actually more concerned about learning at this stage In any case you are telling me about things that i need to hear: flaws! Would you say that, in your opinion, specificity with a probable better performance rate is second to multi functionality, that could come, let's say, as an add-on to a bigger and more capable piece of equipment? Thanks kayb! Well in my initial concept, size would be about 100 mm (4'') in diameter for around 60 mm (about 2,5'') in height. But heating plates could come in more sizes as to allow for more quantities. Could you please guide me through that process of coating them with oils and sugars? I'd really like to know more about that! Thanks blue_dolphin! Yes well me too. And some times it happened and later i realized i had no more. It's funny that I had no idea so many people in the US roasted their own coffee beans! So this would be a plus, correct? (in Portugal we just drink expressos at the nearest shady coffee place) Thank you Chris ah-a new information. Never did that myself - will do it immediately! Do they get crunchy and evenly roasted as would they if were roasted in let's say a dedicated appliance? Thanks Lisa! Hmhm yes they do. That is a good point. (about the heater and the grinder) Would you grind spices before or after toasting them? I usually grind them after toasting. Guys you are great! I am learning SO MUCH Thank you all!
  4. Thanks! Yes Portugal has many excellent drinks! i do like Port, but i don't drink it as much as one would expect! A rare glass of white Port maybe during an appetizer. As for the red variety.. maybe with some cheese or a mildly sweet dessert. My favorite Portuguese drink would be the delightfully fresh white wine, especially nice with seafood, or the hard spirit "aguardente", which you may find similar to aquavit. I am now eating pork ribs (!) with ratatouille (typical Mediterranean ingredients) but with a Turkish twist of minty yogurt and some paprika. I usually cook food from a lot of places (my mother is half french and i have southern Portuguese roots on her side, but my father is local from Porto), but I'd say that some that have a Portuguese root would be African inspired chicken curry (from the colonial times), a fish and prawns soup that is packed with cilantro (a touch of Alentejo), and seafood lentils with "chouriço", cilantro and roasted cherry tomatoes.
  5. Thanks liuzhou for your feedback! So I take it that simplicity is a big plus for you correct? Ok great feedback thank you so what I'm thinking is that for this to be a good idea it would to serve for more than just nuts (seeds and spices as well and maybe others?) and also easiness when it comes to cleaning is naturally desirable. And i take it that at least it should be cheaper than a more capable appliance. Agree? Well i do have to say that if this fits into a niche - you yourself have a coffee roaster so that gives me a little perspective - it is worth looking at. Thanks!
  6. Dear community, I am currently studying for my PhD on product design, and thought it was a good idea to come up with something useful and innovative on the field of small kitchen appliances. I am seeking some feedback and have an opinion from others that love food! While i do enjoy having a good conversation about food and cooking, let this be a honest disclaimer that i am indeed doing this for the purpose of enriching my research! To thank you I'd like to give something back: should you have any Portuguese recipe that needs translation, I'd be glad to help and translate that for you! I am a daily consumer of roasted nuts and seeds, and when i use spices i normally roast them just a little before grinding. I do dislike having to turn an oven on or using one of the stove's discs just for that... also no one likes charred nuts. Do you share this experience? My idea was to have some sort of stand-alone small heating device that would ensure continuous motion and, along with a timer, one could toast nuts or seeds without constant supervision (and maybe get to answer to that email or get the coffee going..) I for myself find this useful but I am really interested in knowing what you think about it! - please give me any kind of critique, all is valuable to me! Thank you all! Galamba from Portugal
  7. Dear community, First of all I'd like to thank Chris for this opportunity! I am a product design PhD student from Porto, Portugal. I love food and cooking and so I'm trying to innovate in a field that I'm passionate about. That's why I'm here: to learn with others that share a love for food Hope I'll be able to give a positive contribution!
