Hi Marc, yes he remembers now you saying the menu will based on what market produce is available. Venison is always a winner for me! Just hoping my cold buggers off so i can actually taste something.
See you Friday

After failing to get a booking for Fraiche for my birthday in June, Mr Woman has come up trumps with a lovely Christmas pressie of a meal there this Friday Hubby has no idea which menu it is we're having (he mentioned markets but who knows? he has a memory like a sieve), but I'm certainly looking forward to it.
I knew my web bookmark entitled 'Places I really want to visit please' would be noticed at some point

hmm, the only reviews I've read of Geales since its revamp have been less than complementary. Matthew Norman even apologised on behalf of the Queen in his review: http://www.guardian.co.uk/weekend/story/0,,2124518,00.html
Gill wasn't sure either: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_...icle1849771.ece
Supose the only way to find out is go yourself1

Cheers YKL, I might have a look at Brio - I think Italian is balanced choice for a large group (of 10 adults and 2 kids, 30+ is our age group). Personally I'd love to go to Anthonys but hey, another time Think lunch is less of a pressing issue as the husbands are all buggering off to watch the rugby in the pub so it'll be a smaller group of women and babies for lunch.
Thanks both of you!

ooh been to Croma in manc, and it wasn't half bad! Good call! Maybe ok for evening, will have to give them a ring.

It has been left to the two childless people to sort out a uni mates get-together of 30-something friends (that's our age not how many of us there is!) and their kids in Leeds on Saturday (why they couldn't leave the little ankle biters at home and have a blessed night off I don't know). So does anyone have suggestions for family friendly places for lunch and evening dinner? We have two babies (but only during day), a toddler and a 4/5 y-o.
We are staying within the city centre itself so places outside this aren't a possibility. Help oh wise ones, please!

Masterchef winner Thomasina Miers has just opened Wahaca according to yesterday's Times (in which she has a food column in the Body & Soul supplement). Have the say, the menu actually looks refreshingly good value - anyone been yet?

We had a Label Anglais one from our local butchers the other week and was very impressed. About £14 for a bird that fed four hungry people (in fact I made the fricasee recipe off their website, which was bloody lovely - http://www.labelanglais.co.uk/html/recipe_roastchicken.htm).
The fact of the matter is that if you are paying £3 for a chicken, it ain't going to taste nice! Organic isn;'t necessarily the best either.

Am off to Devon in two days, does anyone have anymore to add?
-
It's only Gordo's by name, it's Marcus Wareing's domain. Not really been mentioned since GR Holdings took it on about four years ago:

Bertie, thank you so much for all those. We are only there Sat-Mon but the folks are there all week so this will give them plenty to go on. I'll print this thread out for them and ask them to report back!
Not sure a trip to the Black Sheep brewery is a good idea, won't be able to prise Mr Woman and my dad away The Blue Lion looks good though, nice to see a proper inn that doesn't look to faffed around with.

We're off to Askrigg in North Yorkshire this weekend (for two days though as opposed to three weeks) and the parents have booked us in here http://www.wensleydaleheifer.co.uk/ for Sunday night? Has anyone been and has any opinion? Any other recs for around those parts?

Ha ha, yes Lllandudno is definitely neither sophisticated or urban!
http://www.swn-y-mor.com/features.htm Well my first impressions of your hotel was that it looks a little dated but Trip Advisor members appear to give it great reviews so you obviously can't judge a book by it's cover
If there is anyway you can get out of your booking, I would really recommend Conwy instead, it's a much prettier, friendlier little harbour town. Not sophisticated or urban either but much nicer than Llandudno.
EDIT: Just to add though, my husband loves Llandudno and thinks i'm being a terrible snob. So just ignore me
-
If I were you, I'd stay in Conwy or Deganwy then! Bear in mind, Deganwy's station is called Llandudno Junction, quite confusing!
-
Just spotted this Manc new opening snippet on Hardens: http://www.hardens.com/articles/article_de...ype=blog&id=342

Another rec for Llandudno: http://www.bodysgallen.com/dining/index.php Bodysgallen Hall on the road between Llandudno and Deganwy/Conwy has good afternoon teas, never properly dined there though.
Also in Deganwy is Nikki Ips, a pretty decent Chinese restaurant that got in the Michelin guide a couple of years back (a bib not stars though). Think they may also own the Wild Orchid Thai next door but not tried that yet. The Quay hotel has recently opened in Deganwy also but it looks like all fur coat and no knickers to me.
If you don't mind me asking, where are you staying? And why on earth are you staying in Llandudno in the first place? There are much nicer places throughout Snowdonia! I always see Llandudno as a bit of a faded old seaside town where lots of OAPs go on coach holidays to!
-
I've never actually eaten in a restaurant in Llandudno, we always end up getting fish and chips and eating them on the seafron, doing battle with the seagulls However, I've heard that the St Tudno hotel is meant to be good: http://www.st-tudno.co.uk/
I can recommend a great French place in Deganwy (a 5 min drive/taxi ride away) called Paysanne. I refer you to my recent post on the Guardian travel website (abuot the 11th post down): http://www.ivebeenthere.co.uk/places/unite...=united-kingdom
We're going back next Friday. Great value at about £22 for 3 courses.
Oops just noticed you don't want French! Oh well...
Just remembered the Fat Cat bar in Llandudno is ok for lunch, nothing special but decent enough grub. This FC outpost (its a chain) seems to do better on the food front than in other ones. http://www.fatcatcafebars.co.uk/llandudno/index.html
Bistro Conwy (funnily enough in Conwy) does good Welsh food, see my earlier post, you do have to book ahead though: http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?showtopic=89493&hl=conwy

Charlie, many thanks for all your suggestions. Canteen is my husband's choice - the pies and roasts drew him. While I would love to go to Bacchus, "messed about food" (his words) is not his thing! He likes to try all kind of food but for his birthday, he'd wants to go somewhere with good, honest grub. What can I say, he likes his meat and potatoes
I have already rang and booked a booth but I will put the other suggestions to him.
We have nothing booked for Friday so I may be able to drag him to the Vietnamese place you mention.
Is Hawksmoor no good for food then?
-
Thanks Graham, but if you reread my post you'll see that I already know that!
-
Has anyone been here recently? We're coming down to London for this easter w/e and quite fancied its no-nonsense approach. Actually the other half did - I'd like to go to Bacchus (we're staying at the Hoxton Hotel) but it's Mr Woman's birthday and he liked the menu more at Canteen. Noticed it won Best Restaurant in the OFM - is it deserved?
Any other non-too-dear suggestions (to eat, to drink, to make merry) in that general area would be great too.
-
Was going to post nearer time but we are also off to Suoth Devon on our hols in July - Newton Ferrers to be exact. So would be interested to hear of any more recs.
Have heard of the Oyster Shack - but sure I read a so-so newspaper review about it.
-
Also, isn't Rococo now called Maggie's after Gordo gave it a going-over in Kitchen Nightmares?
Sounds like the new boy needs to pay attention
-
Bapi, I may be completely wrong on this but I think if you get a Platinum card you can use it wherever.
We have one but have only used it once in the past few months (there's not many places I want to visit in the Chester/North Wales section - it is mostly Brewers Fayre muck), but we intend to go and try in in Manchester next week and in Liverpool very soon.
As for the newspaper offers, there is never much of note for the Cheshire region either.

I've noticed Lounge 10 rarely gets a mention these days. Has it gone off the boil? I thought the surroundings would be perfect for a long, lazy lunch? Does the food not match up?
Fraiche
in United Kingdom & Ireland: Dining

So unfair, the cold I mentioned on BD has ballooned into a full-on sneeze and cough fest. I doubt you'd want such a red-eyed and nosed customer in your restaurant Marc, so my hubby has just called to cancel. Sorry if it's too late, I wanted to see if I was well enough to go today. Hopefully we can rebook when you're back open in mid-Jan and I have my taste buds back. I will make it to Fraiche one of these days I promise!
