  1. Glad you liked it, kurl! If you want to make a little extra money during your break, you might consider starting a Melampo delivery service. I'd pay about $50 for that Fellini right now.
  2. I was around 39th Street and 9th Ave. the other day and noticed a much larger butcher shop also called Esposito's Pork. But for some reason I doubt that there is any relation.
  3. You again, huh? I didn't know hipsters liked sausages. But I guess there's cheap beer, so... When I go, I'll be sure to try that spicy kielbasa. But how are the dogs?
  4. Sorry if this has been posted already; I searched but found nothing. This page mentions that D'Artagnan has closed, and when I called to check, the number given was not in service, seeming to confirm its demise. Too bad, I liked the restaurant's concept, though I've never been.
  5. Wow, eGulleteers are running Spice Market! Great to have you with us, rslee. I hope you'll let slip how much you love this site to JG and Kunz .
  6. If it's really that big, I can test your theory by paying close attention to my leftovers! Thursday only, huh? Good to know.
  7. Aha! Not Dafonte's, Defonte's.
  8. Very sad about the Gage and Tollner space, mjr. Has anyone been to any of the Red Hook restaurants: Schnack, 360, Hope and Anchor? I've also heard good things on eGullet about Dafonte's, a spot for heros in Red Hook. But I can't find anything on the Internet about where it is!
  9. I'll give you only the good about my trip to Manganaro's Hero Boy today. There was a very friendly cat with a cropped tail.
  10. I had Les Halles's Choucrote Garnie the other day - got into the restaurant at about 11:15 on a Thursday night, when they were getting close to closing, but I was treated like royalty. The Choucrote (first time I've had it, so I can't really cross-compare to other examples) consisted of two different sausages (one white, one pink), a thick piece of slab bacon, a piece of what I think was fatback, a potato and a thick, smoked pork chop, all served over a thick bed of saurkraut. There was also a big cup of mustard to slather over everything. While I can't speak to other examples of Choucrote, I really enjoyed the different flavors of pork as they mixed with the saurkraut & mustard - it was like the ultimate expression of carnival/fair food. The sausages reminded me of Usinger's - very well spiced, and a good quality of meat. My favorite piece though was the pork chop - it was wonderfully flavored, and perfectly tender - enough texture that I could move my teeth through it, but not tough at all. Thanks for the report. Maybe you should try the choucroute at Jarnac, for your second taste of choucroute. I, of course, now have to try both!
  11. Sounds great, but can you taste the oysters in all that?
  12. Carpet what?! What is this? Glad you had a good meal.
  13. Thanks for that, rpdkpd. What was offered on the brunch-oriented menu?
  14. I'll have to try it! How much do they charge? I've heard good things on eGullet about Jarnac. And I'm excited to try db Bistro's version, which I assume will be about $30.

    Bianca

Great report, Sam! Celeste also does a great job with gnocchi. But the chicken livers at Celeste have always been overcooked. I'll have to try them at Bianca. Did they offer a cheese plate?
  16. I think I ordered my sandwich from Alessandro's son, who I've heard took over the sandwich dispensing duties. I was asked to pick my bread and heard some other people requesting extra vinaigrette. He was not at all dictatorial. I was wrong. Not his son, but: -nymetro.com
  17. The Fellini on focaccia? I'll have to try that, though I thought the semonlina made an excellent match for that sandwich. Melampo is at 105 Sullivan St. For Mike's info, see Jason's link several posts ago.
  18. I think it took me less than a day after seeing your post about the Yankee Stadium to go get one myself. Your opinions have that kind of power over me, Jason. It was an incredible sandwich, a different concept entirely, as FG said, from sandwiches at Melampo. I thought Manganaro might supply a sandwich fix while I'm at work, in Midtown, but maybe I should just figure out a way to safely transport one from Mike's.

  20. Nicole, Do you have a favorite Melampo sandwich? Or any tips -- best bread, extra vinaigrette -- for my next trip? I've only had the Fellini on semolina.
  21. Along with a bad shawarma sandwich, I recently had an overly salty foul. And I tried a cold "salad" of sundried tomatoes, onions and parlsey which tasted unpleasantly of burnt cumin.
  22. Thanks, rozrapp. Doesn't that picture look great?
  23. I went to school in Poughkeepsie, in an area which in my opinion lacked a competent Indian restaurant, and planned every weekend of my senior year to make the trip to Jaipore. But I never did. How's the food? The menu looks very interesting. The architecture, too.
  24. Have you ever tried Jaipore Royal Indian, in Brewster? Quite a building...
