  1. Definitely Nectar, and let them know you have theater tickets so you get in and out in time. If you want something slightly lower key, try the bar at Nectar.
  2. Hi I'm going to a late show at the Point Friday night in Bryn Mawr. I'd like to have a nice, not horribly expensive, dinner before the show somewhere nearby. I don't get out to the Main Line often, so I'd like to use this opportunity to try something particularly good out there. Any suggestions? How is 333 Belrose? I see the restaurant.com coupon for that... Thanks!
  3. I'll be in Boothbay in August, as I am every year. Definitely will be eating those oysters. When's the festival this year?
  4. Ahh..from the terms and conditions it looks like no. Does anyone know if Sansom St allows you to apply it to alcohol as well?
  5. Hey--can you use more than 1 gc at a time?? ie. can I bring 3 to dinner at Sansom St??
  6. Will attempt. But I know of no women of said characteristics who actually like to eat!

Well, I'll unfortunately have to be moving to the Wisconsin (Heartland) forum in a few months... talk about Philly brain-drain!
  8. This is great--maybe I'll spend a week trying out a different place each day and report back!
  9. Ok funny boys...I guess I shoulda mentioned that I HATE Starbucks and wasn't even considering it...I'm spoiled by this fantastic little joint called Cafe Clave near my house in West Philly--great coffee, great group of regulars, they let me hang all day even if I only spend $5. Looking for a decent vibe as well, I guess. Definitely a place where I can use the restroom or feed the meter without too much fear of losing my laptop.
  10. True--we just had some nice ones at their San Diego branch. Here in Philly M&S does a $1.95 happy hour--not on oysters I think, but tons of appetizers at that price. Do they do that at the DC location--anyone know?
  11. Along those same lines, I'd be interested in hearing about cafes where one can have a cup of coffee, a snack perhaps, and spend 2-3 hrs in front of a book or laptop (preferably) in the middle of a weekday without feeling like I'm imposing or in the way. Places with wireless access would be especially great, and those nearby a Metro stop or in areas I could pretty easily find parking would be doubly-doubly great.
  12. I'm really looking forward to this, and hope to bring a few DC gulleteers along with me!

Congrats Andrew! Me too--I deposited on Tuesday. Two new Dr. Egulleteers!
  14. I had something similar at Django in Philly, emerald coves topped with a pernod gelee. This was a mistake-it totally overpowered the oyster. I'm a purist tho, I want my oysters to taste like oysters--nothing else. Regarding the R months thing- that's more about quality and taste than safety. Oysters breed during the summer, and that's why they taste different during those months. I don't think, this is my understanding anyways, that you're at any greater risk of getting ill from them during non-R months. Anyone who eats raw shellfish alot should simply get a Hep A vaccine tho; Hep A feels like mono, and that sucks.
  15. I really do like bubble tea--both the taste and texture are cool. I'm surprised Minibar hasn't done a riff on it yet.
  16. Given their BYO policy and my growing wine collection, I'd like to know--how is the FOOD at The Caucus Room? I'd never heard of it before this thread...
  17. Any idea of the days/hours of the happy hour at Old Ebbitt? It's not on their website. Anyone tried Oceanaire--do they have a happy hour? Georgetown Seafood had a good one, but they closed.
  18. Good to know LiamDC isn't the only one until recently unaware of bubble tea--guess this, like many things, has come late to DC. (He tried it in LA with me recently). We've had a bubble tea shop on Penn's campus for more than a year--I guess Georgetown doesn't have one yet? It's a tasty snack for summer that can really fill you up--I especially recommend lychee. I think I recall seeing some bubble tea shops in Eden Center--in fact, I'm sure of it.
  19. Unfortunately, Carman was ill on April 7 when we were supposed to have dinner at Django, so my friend Sarah accompanied me. We opened a bottle of EIEIO Cuvee O--an Oregon Pinot Noir, which I'd saved for celebrating my dissertation defense. A lovely, big complex wine. Here's what we had for dinner. Me: 1. Emerald Cove Oysters in the Shell, Pernod Gelee, Green Herb Sauce, Peppery Creme, and Oyster Toast ($9) I love oysters, and these were from PEI, but the dish didn't work. The gelee was too potent, and combined with the herbs and creme it completely overpowered the delicate oyster taste. 2. Spiced Venison Carpaccio, Truffle Dressed Radicchio, Smooth White Bean Puree, Parmesan Socca Cracker ($10). The venison was thinly sliced and simply lovely, and the puree was a nice accompaniment. Didn't think much of the cracker. 3. Wild Mushroom and Noodle Carbonara, Crispy Pancetta, Sunny Side Quail Egg, and Natural Chicken Sauce ($12). I ordered this thinking of the fantastic carbonara I had at Prune in NYC months back, which was a mistake. The comparison alone may have killed this dish for me. It just didn't gel--the quail egg is small, as expected, and the egginess didn't make it into the dish sufficiently. 4. Artisan Cheese Tasting Quartet, Acacia Honey, Spiced Hazelnuts, and Toasted Croutons: Coach Farm Triple Creme, Pecorino Toscano Sheep with Truffle, Fromage de Meaux, Great Hill Massachusetts Blue ($9). I always get the cheese plate, and hoped that Aimee would serve it as usual--but alas this time she was at work in the kitchen. The server described these cheeses as 'less special than usual' when serving them, and she was right...the blue was good, the others missable. Luckily, I'd brought a bottle of port (from CA, name escapes me at the moment) and enjoyed that immensely. Ah well, so I didn't fare so well. My companion, however, loved her meal: 1. New Potato and Spring Herb Soup, Flaked Smoked Trout, and Crunchy Celery Salad ($8). 2. Seared Sliced Duck, Creamy White Corn Polenta, Crisp Confit and Shallots, Mushrooms, Rich Duck Jus ($23) I grabbed a taste of this--lovely. Maybe I should've gotten an entree; but apps at Dmitris earlier killed that for me. 3. Chocolate Almond Terrine, Crunchy Almond Praline, and Almond Ice Cream ($7). All in all, I've eaten at Django 5 times. This was the least memorable meal of those 5. However, it was still many times better than meals I've had this year at other highly thought of places like Melograno's and Pasion. I'll go back for more.
  20. I'd heard that about their clams, but when I went in August they weren't great--overbattered, totally greasy, nothing like I get in Maine every year. The memory of that, plus the rest of the terrible meal Mazman and I suffered through on his 40th birthday, keeps me from going back to Kinkead's...
  21. Hi- We got back a few days ago. Here's the report! I spent 4 hours waiting for Liam at LAX, but thankfully discovered the Tom Bradley Intl terminal--the only area with food open to the public not holding a plane ticket. I had a great bowl of ramen at Hamada Orient Express ($8), which was full of Japanese flight attendants. In San Diego we took many of your suggestions and hit the following places: 1. Rice-- at the W Hotel. The mojitos here weren't well done but we liked the food a great deal. We had some very nice dungenous crab cakes, spicy fresh shrimp summer rolls, a thai beef salad, and a chinois chicken salad (my first, I loved it). Liam also enjoyed the chocolate lava cake for dessert. 2. Kiyo's--sushi in the Gaslamp. We had a very nice, fresh lunch here. It was much less expensive, and almost as good as the sushi we'd had earlier at Sushi Roku in West Hollywood. 3. McCormick and Schmick's--this was an unplanned lunch, we were driven to it by the absence of any places near the water that served raw oysters and were open for lunch (I had a craving). We had some great Beacon Points and Malaspinas, manila clams, and a Crab Louis. 4. El Agave--This was pretty good. We had a sea bass, and a pork mole. The margaritas were served very weak the first time, which was a big disappointment at $8.95 a pop. We were seated outside on a cold night, and the heaters kept breaking; and at the end of the meal we had to come inside in search of our server and the check. I also thought the food was overpriced for the area. However, it was a nice meal, somewhat unexpected in the midst of that incredibly touristy area. 5. Point Loma Seafood--LOVED IT. Fabulous fish tacos, fabulous clams, great ceviche. I'm dying to go back there!! 6. Marine Room--beautiful romantic views, definitely overpriced food. My seared tuna was way over sesame-crusted, but Liam did enjoy his baramundi. We had a lovely Saintsbury Pinot Noir--that made the evening, along with the terrific entertainment provided by gorgeous white seagulls prancing on the black ocean. We also hit a few bars in SD (we were disappointed by the Grape fyi) and Liam also went to Rubio's for fish tacos--he'll have to report on that. We did go to Chino Farms, where I was surprised at the small size of the stand but thrilled with the freshness and sweetness of the strawberries.
  22. Hi Thanks everyone for your suggestions. After a long day of wine-tasting at Melville, Sanford, the Los Olivos Tasting Room, Beckman, Babock, and Andrew Murray, LiamDC, mazman and I enjoyed some snacks at Mattei's Tavern. The kobe beef burger ($12) was quickly devoured by the boys, and I loved the chicken wings. We also hit a great little taco stand in SB, near the Goodwill, but I don't have the name--perhaps Mazman will fill it in for me. We headed back to LA--to AOC--for our actual dinner.
  23. Just returned from LA and am having some serious oyster cravings. I'd like to get a list going of the best oyster bars in town--especially those with happy hour specials or other good deals, and a wide selection. I'm thinking along the lines of this place in Santa Monica which offered a selection of 6 plus a flight of wines for $8.95 during hh. Anywhere in the area, including Bethesda, is fine. So, besides Johnny's (which doesn't have a discount during hh I think), what else is good? I'm especially hoping to find some Stellar Bays. (Tho I do realize we're approaching the end of the good season.)
  24. What a great idea--and how sweet (LiamdC where are you??)! I'd also love to hear your thoughts on this, as I'm spending the summer in DC, leaving my sweet-home Philly to do so...Incentives please!
  25. I'd love to do this before leaving town, but can't do May 3. If it's May 10, I'm in!
