  1. In my opinion if someone loves a place I want to hear about it. Even if they just want to talk about looking forward to someday eating there. On an other note did anyone hear about the statue disappearing form in front of Star Anise? biggest crime since someone stealing the automated chef from in front of Frank Baker's on Cambie back in the 80's. I hope the VPD take this seriously!

  2. As much as I like your idea don't ruin a good thing by going into politics. I think we have enough politicians. As for wood burning pizza joints I vote yes. I saw a poster yesterday for the Ward system referendum and they used two pizzas to make their point. Looked like Domino's though.

  3. Cioffi's has a pecoroino with truffle. It's a bit manufactured though. Not sure if they are real truffles. For those of us who don't pick mushrroms, any suggestions on buying some? Porcini especially. Whole Foods has had a great run on cheap Chanterelles lately. They have other things, bit too expensive though.

  4. If you want to know what Vancouver would look like without the dollars and culturism that flows in because of tourism come out to Maple Ridge. Even better live in some backwoods community like Corning California. I myself find the hordes of people at Granville Island who are there to look at food and shake thier heads in amazement that anyone would buy a lobster mushroom a pain in the ass. I also know that they aren't all tourists. There are enough ignorant people in the 2 million that live in the lower mainland. Do I want them all to shove off? No. It's called tolerance.

Even a lumbering waddling tourist can enrich ones life if given a chance. Sam I think you need to go out there and give one a hug. Buy him a coffee and try to see life through his aviators. Chances are they have spent a lot of money to come here. Somehow they have earned that money. Perhaps when they aren't travelling they are at home working on the cure for cancer or raising children or planting a garden. You don't know. With the attitude expressed here I doubt you will ever know.

Many a time I've been paired on the gold course with tourists who barely spoken english. Never by the end of 18 holes did I find the experience in any way negative. I can't say that about every local I've played with.

  5. I have no problem with the Conde Naste magazines. They are what they are. I hate that cliche but it applies here. They are advertisments with strategically placed editorial that pimps the products that are advertised within. Jamie perhaps you should look away at this point. I wouldn't want to emberass you with my praise.

That's why I respect Vancouver mag so much because of the great writers and thier basically counter culture opinions inter-sprinkled with glossy adds.

  6. This is rich! The centre of the universe asking us to write to Ottawa to help with a Toronto issue. I believe that most sushi grade fish in Vancouver is flash frozen by the wholesaler. In my opinion this is a great idea. It kills the parasites that are rampant in salmon and quite possibly other species. Oh yeah while we write our letters, why don't you guys help us out with the offshore drilling ban, the highway money we never get, and even some funding for the police and fireman games. Not to mention our share of the GST.

  7. Pizza from a place in WV called Pastameli. It's amazing you could make pizza so tastless. Sushi freom a new place in the Ridge called Iori. Very good sushi, warm rice, fresh fish and some very good spicy tuna. A donair at a place in New West called Paradise. This place is pretty good, order the chicken. I'm not sure wether my judgement is clouded by the fact that the owner is such a nice guy.

  8. I would assume if I was really stranded a large part of my day would be spent attending to more basic needs like rounding up food, making coconut shell bras and grass skirts for the women stranded with me. While weaving myself a Speedo from kelp, I would probably enjoy something like Marques di Gresy Moscato.

Later in the eveneing with a meal of breadfruit and raw fish I would probably enjoy something like Campaccio from Terrabianca. My geuss is I would probably be depressed in this situation, so something positive and uplifting would be better then a wine I would need to think about.

  9. This is a very interesting story Jamie. Oddly enough I was paired up with a fellow named Franco Anglieso (spelling?) at the golf course on Saturday. As so often is the case on a beautiful day golfing talk gets around to work, food, wine etc. It turns out Franco had a managment position at the hotel during this time. His claim is that 900 West never did even 35% the covers that the Timber Club did.

It sure underwhelmed me the one time we ate there. The entree pricing was pretty spectacular though!
