Returned to college for a PhD in sociology about 15 years ago. While my research has been perfunctory, the effort I put into my food and coffee was not.

There are two similarities between cooking from scratch and making coffee from scratch (i.e grinding fresh beans and using a proper brewing method). The first is no matter how poorly it is done, it always tastes better than prepackaged foods or coffee.

The second is that one can measure ones improvement by how choosy one needs to be when going to a restaurant or cafe to get something better than at home.

The big difference is that there are a lot more good restaurants than cafes.
