  1. My wife and I were in the city today and she had plans for later this evening, so i was intending on making a solo trip to Totonno's in Coney Island to try what was described to me as 'pure pizza bliss'.

Well, we finished our plans early but she didn't have enough time to make the trip to Totonno's, so i reverted to my back-up plan of Lombardi's which was also on my 'must try' list.... it was GREAT!!

One of the best pies i've had in NYC! (still debating whether it tops Denino's, and i don't think it does, but they're both so different that it's almost an apples to oranges comparison)

Sauce was fantastic, bursting with flavor and seasoned perfectly. The cheese was spread evenly throughout the pie, and the crust was nice and crisp. This pie is better than Grimaldi's in Brooklyn just from the point of view that it holds up well... at Grimaldi's the crust is soggy by the time you get to the 3rd slice, with Lombardi's the crust stays stiff and crisp the entire time. If i had to have a complaint, i would say the crust was just a little dry, but that's only if i had to have a complaint, and it's easily overlooked do the high quality of the pie's other aspects.

Service on the other hand... piss poor. I don't think the server said more than 7 words to us the entire time. Our order was begun by him standing there with a pen in hand which indicated he was ready, and other questions were received with a nod of the head. Also saw pies served to others who had ordered after us. The server seemed to be in a bad mood, so maybe he was just having an 'off' day.

We arrived at 4:30pm (Sat) and there was already a line outside, took about 20 minutes to get seated.

We will be back! (but hopefully i'll make it to Totonno's first)

  2. but i'm more of a 'hole in the wall' type of guy than a 'legal seafood' type, so my recommendations may not fit your liking.

Why do people have to be categorized? It's not possible to patronize both sorts of places?

I didn't mean to offend or classify anyone, i was merely trying to show my own tastes and preferences, and therefore not waste the reader's time if they are looking for a 'legal' seafood' type of place.

  3. I do think this place has great chicken parm heros and have been eating them for 20+ years there.... was there just 2 weeks ago as a matter of fact!

Don't go expecting gourmet free range chicken and imported cheese, but for "basic pizzeria grub" it's the best damn chicken parm hero around.

If i wasn't busy this weekend i'd meet you there.

  4. Also away from the highways is a little pizzeria that someone on here once mentioned a long time ago as having the best chicken parm hero they'd ever had.

That was me, and i still stand by my assessment that it's the best chicken parm hero i've ever had (sorry you didn't like it). The place is La Bella Roma Pizzeria and is on Farview Ave, just south of Century Road.

Been going there for 20 years, and still one of the places i like to frequent when i'm in the area... chix parm hero is the thing to get if you decide to go.

Nothing fancy, but a great hero.

  5. What type of food do you like?

I grew up there and still have my 'local favorites' which i return to when in the area about once per month... but i'm more of a 'hole in the wall' type of guy than a 'legal seafood' type, so my recommendations may not fit your liking.

  6. IMO, this place is WAY over-rated as a chinese restaurant. I used to get their chicken salad sandwiches quite often when i worked in the area and they were good, but the chinese food is 'blah' at best.

With my glaring review, i will admit that they do have a following.

If you're in the area, you'd do better at the Jackson Hole down the road on Grand Ave. (although the Preslow's would sooner recommend Benny's across the street)

  7. Englewood has really gone cosmopolitan.  Last Saturday, after a great meal at Saigon Republic, we tried to go for coffee and dessert, but even at 10:30, Starbucks had no tables, and the new Cosi had no tables, the Mexican resto Blue Moon was still 2/3 full and expanded onto the sidewalk in front of 2 other stores (like in Europe).  A lot of people on the street.  Really impressed with Englewood lately.

I agree with all the above EXCEPT the last line.

Paterson's pretty cosmopolitan too. I always see lots of people sitting outside at places like Checkers and Chicken Supreme. Many people in Paterson can even be seen drinking alcohol outdoors and riding bicycles, which is cleary an homage to the European lifestyle! Oh yes, they even have a train station too.

    ROFLMAO!!

  8. What about DiFara's or L&B Spumoni Gardens or Grimaldi's?  Do they hold up to Denino's?  I've been to Grimaldi's but not the others.

L&B Spumoni Gardens i have been to twice, and each time i was disappointed. I have heard stories about it from the "old days" and i think most say it no longer compares to "way back when".

DiFara's is excellent pizza, but if given the choice, i would give the definite edge to Denino's. Like i said, i think it's the best pizza i've had (and i've tried a LOT!)

I'm still looking forward to my Tononno's trip, but it keeps getting delayed

  9. What's the best pizza in Jersey City?

If you in JC, you MUST go to Denino's in Staten Island... just a few minutes from the Bayone Bridge, and the best pizza i've ever had.

(this soon may not be a true statement as i will soon venture to Coney Island to try Totonno's)

    How about Bayonne?

Bayonne? That's even closer than Jersey City!! Same answer as above.

  10. We went to the Iron Monkey ...I was astounded by the menu prices.  Same ol'f friggin' menu except the prices went up substantially.  There were 2 entrees for $29 ($28.95 to be exact, fucking morons), and nothing less than $22.  Appetizers were up to $15.

Somebody's gotta pay for all that advertising they've done.... might as well be the people that already eat there :raz:

  11. Those of you who know me from these boards know that i am a pizza fanatic.

Well, take a seat, because i don't want you to hit your head on the floor when you read the following:

I have actually found a frozen pizza that is GOOD! It's not the best pizza i've ever had, but it certainly is better and more enjoyable to eat than most of the stuff i can get around my neighborhood, and it's easily the best frozen pizza i've ever tried.

It's made by Freshetta and comes in a green box. They have a few varieties, but my favorite is "4 Cheese". I've also tried "Southwestern Chicken" which is more of a chicken fajita style pizza, "Chicken with Rosemary", and "Mozzarella and Basil". The one with rosemary isn't very good (rosemary overpowering), the one with chicken is "good" but the chicken has that "i've been frozen" taste, the mozzarella with basil is 'ok', but not a very high quality basil. Don't get me wrong, they're all pretty good so feel free to try whichever fits your personal tastes, but i think the 4 Cheese is best (followed by the Southwestern Chicken).

The thing that makes these so good is the crust. It one of the rising crust varieties of pizza and it is indeed excellent. I keep a bunch in my freezer for when i'm too lazy (usually) to go outside for a slice. They also make a few varieties of "sauce stuffed crust" which i haven't seen around here (tried it when i was recently in Tallahassee) and it was good. My wife liked the sauce stuffed better, but i prefer the regular type crust.

Give it a try and let me know what you think. It's certainly better (IMO) than anything else on the market, and has become one of my favorite foods to eat in the house.

  12. I will begin by admitting that i know nothing about wine except that i know what i like; however, i DO know a good deal (if you don't believe me, check out my signature)

This store was recommended to me by a friend that travels 30 minutes to get there, and as he put it, "If you're going to buy a few bottles... it's worth the trip." We found ourselves in the nearby area today so we made a stop. The place is the size of a small supermarket and has a wide selection. How "hard to get" the selection is, i don't know, but it appeared to be quite extensive. The staff was very helpful (we were asked if we needed help more than once), but i think many on this board are probably more knowlegable in wines than most of their employees... well, at least they can point you in the right direction.

Our favoite wine, Chte. Ste. Michelle Johannisberg Riesling sells in our local shop for $8.99. This store had it for $7.49, and if you buy a case there is an add'l 10% discount (which brings this bottle down to about $6.75... a BARGAIN!). Discounts apply to MOST wines in the store (if the price ends in a "7" it's not eligible), but apply to whole cases of 12 bottles only (no mixing bottles to get to the 12 mark).

I'd recommend this place as a 'SHOULD' check out if you're in the area.

EDIT: My post was moved here for continuity, i DID do a search for "total wine" before i posted, but i guess i was on the default '30 Days' so it didn't come up. Sorry to make you do the work of moving it.

  13. Tried this place last nite (Sat) based upon recommendations here. Although i'm no expert in the field of Spanish food, i found it to be quite good, some dishes merely "good", some excellent.

There were just two of us so we decided to get 3 Tapas and 1 entree.

First we started with the complimentary soup. It was not the color of a soup that i would typically eat, but i found it good, although it wasn't hot (temperature wise). I asked what kind of soup it was, but didn't understand the name told to me. The 3 tapas we ordered were: shrimp in garlic sauce, shrimp in green sauce, and beef enpenadas.

The shrimp in garlic sauce was OUTSTANDING!!, and the overall winner of the evening. The dough on the outside of the beef enpanadas was also outstanding, and although i would prefer chicken (not on the menu), these too are HIGHLY recommended. The shrimp with green sause was "ok".

For an entree we split the chicken with rice, but asked for boneless chicken insted of how it's typically served which they were more than happy to do it for us (they seemed to be very accomodating). It was served piping hot and after one bite i joking told my wife, "Don't eat another bite... this will taste much better tomorrow." We were already full before the entree came, but we put a small dent in it and i would describe it as "good". However, my suspicion was correct, as when i had the leftovers for lunch today it was fantastic! I even ate some of it cold it was so good.

I concur with the above recommendations on the sangria as well. We had white (i can't drink red wine) and it was one of the best i've had.

Overall, it's nice to have this place nearby and i would sooner head here than into Newark for my next dose of Spanish food.

PS- we got there about 9pm, were told it would be about a 20 minute wait, and were offered a table in the bar area after about 10 minutes which we took. On the way out at about 10:30 there were a few open tables in the restaurant, but the bar area had a pretty good crowd going.

  14. Whereabouts on Rt 17 is the Fireplace?

It's in Paramus, right by the Ridgewood Ave exit, just north of the 'Fashion Center' mall (which if you don't know it, is the mall that has the Bed Bath Beyond, Best Buy, and Applebees).

If you still don't know it, it just north of the Jaguar dealership. If your traveling North, the best landmark is the Wendy's on the southbound side of the road.

    Hope that helps.

  15. And what about that place under the viaduct that I thought sucked moosemeat that everyone else seemed to like, are they still around?

That's La Tuferia(??) which i just wrote a review about in the Valentine's Day thread.

I haven't been in a while due to "hit or miss" quality, but i still recommend "the special" at the Baja, but no need to go for anything else on the menu. Baja also offers free parking.

It's definately "younger" (or i'm getting older) but i still think that Margherita's has the best red sauce in town and is a great value.

La Isla has good food, haven't been to their sister (and nicer) restaurant Brass Rail in a loooong time.

La Scala was good the one time i went there, but service was such an issue i haven't stepped foot back there again (and an owner that didn't seem to care when i brought it to his attention... BYOB). I also just heard a good review from a friend that ate at Le Bisous(??) (new restaurant between 3rd and 4th street on Washington, same owners as a place in Ridgewood, on the pricier side for Hoboken.. $22-$27/entrees)

That's my additions to the other's that have been mentioned, although i'm in the minority when i say i'm not a fan of Amanda's.

Sure there's a handful of places, but not anything near what a town of this size should have.

  16. nice write-up, thereuare.

i didn't realize this place had an upstairs!  i wish i could find my notes on the one time that i went there.  i remember thinking it was OK, but not worth the price.  (if the place was BYOB it would have probably gotten more attention from me)

Thanks, i'll try to be more active around here again, but i've been busy putting together a board of my own for people that use Priceline and Hotwire for hotels (it's a database so that users can figure out the hotels they are likely to get before buying). I guess i owe a thank you to the Perlow's as i am using an Invision Board which i learned about here. I mostly started it to see if i could learn how to do it, but in just 2 weeks it's done well, and it's been taking up a lot of my time/energy.

    Anyway, i digress....

We went there about 1 month after opening and couldn't get a table as the place only had 4 tables for 4 at that time. They have since expanded and taken over the building next door, which is kind of neat, as you can still "see" how it used to be an old brownstone-type apartment (ie- case in point, the narrow stairway). I'd guess they now have about 15 tables (2/4 tops downstairs) and the area upstairs.

We had 2 glasses of wine each, and they were quite generous servings! Knowing the 'atmosphere' there i suspected they would be about $10-$12/each, but i was pleasantly surprised when the 4 glasses were $28. Our total bill for the 3 entrees (one split as appetizer), drinks, no dessert, including tip was $145.

We had a 9:00 reservation, arrived at 8:55, and were seated by 9:05.

    NOTE:

Can't believe i forgot to mention this earlier! We drove to the restaurant last nite and on the way we passed Lady Jane's, and appears that it has now closed!! Not that i have been there in a few years, but it was a place i enjoyed and had recommended to others. Even worse though... it doesn't look just "closed", there is a mesh fence around it now, and looks as if (i'm guessing) the building is going to be built higher and turned into condos :(

    Rosie, have you heard anything?
