Mary, I think you are on to something that is affecting the world...this is global warming...the Garnacha grape while under study by experts in France saw that in 2005 during the heat wave in France the color of one site with good fertile soil mimic the other site with bio mass of 3 x and soil very poor clay high density soil...the color seemed to equal intensity...the red to orange color was transformation into the red to purple - blue fruit...so by this study I have come to surmise that...your conundrum is not an easy issued to address...the changes in the anthocyanins content and concentrations...wiliest I do find that a Zin that is with is available and yes skin contact and hang time are a part of this color extraction...I will state due to the change in the weather...getting increasingly hotter the color of the fruit in hot arid areas will be purple and the cooler areas will have a color profile change from red to blue...heading toward purple... this only nature can fix...to a point...so the consumer is tuned in on blue fruit this tells me they want ripe cool climate grapes that get hot days and cool nights... so yes I have seen blue zins and purple ones...the blue that can capture the pepper and the spice are very ripe cool climate fruits grown in the mountains...the purple are either extracted and blended with as you called it an ink grape...this leaves all of us thinking just how versatile and rewarding it can be to find pleasure in both...

To me barnyard is bad wine. I believe it is caused by a wild yeast. I send it back. ← Brettanomyces is a non-spore forming genus of yeast in the family Saccharomycetaceae, and is often colloquially referred to as "Brett". ... For some when it's done right it add to the complexity...you obviously don't like it...then stay away from Spain... I might add that with Brett you get horse $hit Cow $hit Pig $hit I love the horse $hit... but that's my prefrence...

Jim, I feel that the type A personality people with OCD are the very best winemakers...like you pointed out...it's being meticulous and cutting no corners...call it a good winemaking skill taught from tradition and adapted to modernization...yes you can learn to a point...your heart and soul have to be filled with a passion that "burns...burns...burns..like a ring of fire"..TY Johnny Cash and his wife who wrote the song June Carter Cash...then you are IMHO born with this skill.

TN: Tamaral Ribera Del Duro 2004 The cork real and embossed top and bottom with grapevines...the sides the Bodegas Y Vinedos Tamaral...the label is raised printing art deco vine black and blue with the Anthropomorphisms entertaining The color is dark ruby with a purple haze The bouquet is coy muted distinct black licorice with a hint of vanilla The mouth-feel is soft low acids and smooth tannins The taste is like a big bite of black licorice wrapped up in wild raspberries with a blueberry surprise Hand picked fruit gives you a supple wine the soil of schistose topped with chalk great for heat retention as the vineyards are about 2,500 feet above sea level with hot days and cool nights The tears you can have fun with the ALC BY VOL 13.5% Tinta del País a clone of Tempranillo is what this wine is made from. Again great QPR @ $10.95 a very good table quaffable wine...my score 86/87 points The Tamaral web site Click On Us Purchased at Northside Wine & Spirits Click On Me 222 Elmira Rd, Ithaca, 14850 - (607) 273-7500

TN: Fine Wine For $6.99 Tinto Terrai 05’ Garnacha Floral nose, violet, light cherry and rose, soft mouth feel with a wiffle and flutter of pleasant barnyard notes, body is light to medium. The color is burgundy-lite or plum the edges are translucent near the rim. Alc By Vol stated @ 13% hits the head like a 14%. The plastic cork actually helped this young wine oxidize this helped the wine age faster than normal. Notes of soft wood, walnut wood tannin; overall for the price this is a very good value wine. RS best guess is 1.2%

However you test is better than not to have tested your skills or others... I have to tell you that as long as it's fun and not belittling in any way...then you can really enjoy yourself.

Chardonnay and Riesling have the same parent so This got me to thinking is Riesling's new discovery due to the over oaked Chard craze that went bust... I have posted the stats with a link in a previous post on Chard for you stat sticklers... IIRC 70% who tasted unoaked loved it because the were an ABC'er before. Now with Riesling in short plantings in the US if the new trend to go naked and not use oak with Chard then this just might fill the bill...as more people want domestic Riesling maybe the substitute wine will become naked Chard. With this fact that I found in "The Oxford Companion to Wine, 3rd Edition: Books: Jancis Robinson" The fact that Riesling and Chardonnay both share a parent Gouais Blanc........ How many knew Chardonnay was Gouais Blanc x Pinot Noir

Hermann J. Wiemer In the Finger Lakes region....because he doesn't play around...and will tell you the truth ..even if it hurts..... an so this true story goes.... one day a women was tasting his wine during harvest.....and he was serving the wine.....farmers freak out during harvest..is it going to rain..how hot is it..how cool...can I get a few days of sun to really get the harvest right...are the birds eating my ripe fruit..etc.... this is what we think about..... back to the story..fruit flies are prevalent during harvest and crush I have munched on a few myself by accident or that fact I was too drunk to care...so the woman asks for a new glass because a fruit fly landed in her glass..Hermann refused the request..and then told her "you think that little fly will kill you... think again... and then he poured more wine..and she shut up and drank away.. he has a way with words... so for me he is very hard to approach unless you know his reputation..so if one were to meet him they would call him eccentric....I know him and just call him Hermann...he also does not allow limo or buses to taste..another story...I guy get out of the limo to buy a case and walked up to the tasting-room and they tell him "no wine for you' why....the limo...the man "explains how they parked it on the highway and walked up to the tasting-room ...he was told to leave....he hates the camera and being interviewed so he has others do this for him...modest yes ...and very stand off ish.....yet I love his wines and this perfection is in the wine...it's all about getting it right and Hermann will not let distractions...enter his life....

Knowledge is like this if only a priori knowledge be gained then when you taste you will not be tasting blind. ...you will have a pre conceived idea about the wine.... best is the sneak attack....

Personally I think it's a stunt......

I am a proud winemaker who is not shy....I am very approachable....yet I must hear this 50 time a day where are the other winemakers I have questions... when people see me with my shirt that proudly says winemaker they freak out and love it.....knowing most of the winemakers around this region..... they are best to be kept in the cellar....I think sales would fall if they got to talk with someone..especially the ones that hate wine and drink beer.....yep ...not all winemakers like wine ...strange but true......also most move around during their winemaking years so the owners of wineries are at risk promoting a winemaker...and then they leave...not good for the winery or their image......so I can see 2 reasons not to showcase a winemaker..one is they look like a train wreck and two if they leave and your clients follow them.....as a owner winemaker..weatherman...garbage man.. etc.. running a small winery you have to have something...this is me... the winemaker.......and co-owner...the wife is the real boss...
