  1. I've been thinking a lot about this, particularly as I consider upcoming New Year's Resolutions. Here is my question to you: What food items do you now make that you used to buy? (plus, are they better homemade?) This is part of my 'eat healthier' (in terms of less unpronounceable things) plan for the year, and I'm really trying to cut back on processed foods. Some things I've already decided; for me, there is no good reason not to make my own bread, I have a killer peanut butter recipe, and most bottled salad dressings frankly disgust me (I'm all for a quick balsalmic/garlic/olive oil emulsion-- takes all of 15 seconds; I mean, seriously.). But I'm looking for other things which can be homemade sans chemicals, which are better homemade. Ideas? Thanks!
  2. So there has been extensive discussion about what to get for other people, but I have yet to see a thread about what the eGulleteers are asking for over the holidays. Anyone? I'll start; I know I'm getting a new Shun Classic 8" Chef's Knife and a 3.5" Paring Knife ( ) from my parents. I'm also getting Culinary Artistry and Working the Plate, two food-related books (sort of cookbooks, but more reference). Plus, not exactly holidays, but I'm expecting a little money in mid-January and plan on buying The Professional Chef, 8th Edition, about which I am so excited. So... any food-related pressies heading your way?
  3. In 2007, I will eat fresher, more seasonal food, and more vegetables. I will make a sourdough loaf every month. And a Buche de Noel. I will find the perfect bread recipe. (See above) I will learn to make all the really important, basic dishes and sauces. This is the year I will try to use a new spice every week. I will taste caviar and blue cheese. I will use my new knives (yay!) I will give more gifts of food. I will perfect my knife skills. (or try) We... are people? My kids will definitely (hopefully) not exist by the end of 2007. I will teach... maybe. I will read as much of the Professional Chef as I can.
