About Me
I am the author of La Paella: Deliciously Authentic Rice Dishes from Spain's Mediterranean Coast (Chronicle Books, 2006) and am currently writing a new one (also for Chronicle) on rice, pasta, and couscous in the Mediterranean.
I have written, mostly about food and travel, for many magazines and newspapers, including Gourmet, Food & Wine, EatingWell, the Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Atlantic Monthly, Christian Science Monitor, Tin House, and Dwell. I also do a couple of features every year for Continental’s in-flight magazine and write frequently for the Spanish government publication Foods From Spain News.
I have developed recipes for Gourmet, Food & Wine (including a featured "Last Bite"), EatingWell, the Washington Post, Christian Science Monitor, and Tin House.
In the autumn, Chronicle Books published Soup’s On!: 75 Soul-Satisfying Recipes from Your Favorite Chefs. Inside is my classic Spanish gazpacho. Other contributors include Alice Waters, Thomas Keller, Traci des Jardins, Elizabeth Falkner, Joyce Goldstein, Charlie Trotter, and Jacques Pépin.
I photographed La Paella myself and am photographing my new book, too. Other cookbooks I have photographed include Teresa Barrenechea’s The Cuisines of Spain, which was a 2006 IACP Cookbook Award Finalist in the international category, and Braiden Rex-Johnson’s Pike Place Market Seafood Cookbook.
My photos have occasionally accompanied my writing in Dwell, Atlantic Monthly on-line, the Los Angeles Times, Christian Science Monitor, and Foods From Spain News. Galleries of some of my work can be viewed at www.photoshleter.com/user/jkoehler
I live in Barcelona with my wife and two daughters.
