  1. It depends on what you are looking for....as in price.

I've never sourced North American caviar (sturgeon), but just paid $650 for 9 oz of Royal Iranian Osetra.  So $73/oz...and that is a volume discount deal.

I don't know what Varieties of Sturgeon live in North America....I do know that there are some in the Fraser River, but that Conservation officers arrest people who catch them as they are scarce.

Have also heard that the Mississippi is another source, but in the north.

    Must research this more.

Thats a very good price. Where did you get it??

I dont want Russian caviar for several reasons. Mostly because they dont understand the concept of environmently friendly. And also, with the amount of pollution in the Russian rivers, I am surprised the eggs dont glow a healthy green.

  2. By the way... if its super-simple but super-good you want, in Jerusalem make your way to Sima (near the Mahane Yehuda Shuk)

    Sima *

    Rehov Agrippas 82, Jerusalem. Tel. (02) 623-3002

Despite its hyper-simplicity, this Jerusalem landmark is nearly always packed, and most come here to feast on the magnificent "mixed Jerusalem grill" - a mixture of chicken hearts and livers with bits of lamb, all of which have been seasoned marvelously with a mixture of spices so secret that the owner swears that no manner of torture, coaxing or bribery will get him to reveal his ingredients, before being griddle-fried with generous amounts of onion and garlic. Order it by the plateful if you want to be among the hoi-polloi but do it in a pita if you truly want to enjoy yourself. Also worth trying are the grilled kebabs and lamb chops, each of which are accompanied by really good cole slaw, pickles, olives, and Turkish salad. Good for a casual feast at any time of the day. Open 10:00 – 01:00. Closed  Friday night and Saturday until the end of the Sabbath. Reasonable prices.  Kosher.

I remember dining at an outdoor place, that sounds similar to what you're describing when I used to live in Israel (early 1990's). All I remember is my parents drove south from Ramat-Gan for sometime, and here was this place, right from the highway, with tables and tables, and cooks grilling shashlicks right infront of you to order and it was so packed. And it was soooooooo good. It has to be a differnt place though, I am positive it wasn't near Jerusalem.

By the way, you guys sure you dont want anything eh?

  3. ^

I enjoyed Locus the times I've been there, but not everybody agrees with us --> http://www.dinehere.ca/restaurant.asp?r=227

However, I have been disappointed by Havana in the past  which is a shame, because I really wanted to enjoy their food. Am I the only one?

Out of curiousity, what do you like to eat at Locus?

    Nancy

Maybe I was just lucky? And maybe the time you went to Locus the chef was smoking a doobie and forgot to take out the chicken in time? I am pretty sure I had their chicken dish as well. I always try to follow my cardial rule about going out to eat and I will share it with you. Don't go to Denny's and expect French Laundry, in either the service or the food. So when I go to the Locus, I stick to items which are hard to screw up, even if they tried (like a burger). Now mind you, I haven't been there in about a year because I used to go there with my gf who is now my ex... Not that I'm bitter!! :raz:

By the way, anybody visited The Main? Went there once last year, was not impressed at all. I think the place has so much potential, and its not that I found the food to be bad, just not very original. Just like dozens of other family-run Greek places around the GVRD. Any thoughts?

  4. ^I have to disagree with No. 9. The dishes are largely hit-and-miss, with most of them being "misses" for me. I only eat there if I'm drunk and it's 4 a.m. I do like the tendon and noodle bowl, though. The plates of BBQ duck from No. 9 always seem kind of boney to me...

And I disagree with your disagreement! :raz: I think its greasy Chinese food at its best. Although yes, I've usually eaten during the wee hours while hammered, but I can still tell bad from good (like Denny’s at 3am). And their Spicy Green Beans are the best I have eaten anywhere, ditto bbq pork.

  5. today i wandered down to the richmond public market and came accross the guy on the ground floor selling BBQ duck and BBQ pork and other things. I bought a whole duck to have over several meals and when i did get to it tonight it was good but it got me to thinkin about BBQ ducks....

Where have you eaten them that you thought they were SUPER tasty?

and what kind of prices were you paying?

I always get the duck for takeaway ...usually from a BBQ place but...if anyone has any suggestions as to where they have had good ones in the richmond area i would really appreciate knowing.

this was the first time i bought a whole duck but it looked good and i was really in the mood to dive in....and knowing there is more tomorrow means i dont have to think about dinner as i work such long hours.  not alot of choices down here in the point roberts area.

so... any help on the duck thing would be great i want to most flavor i can find.

    thanks.

Number 9 in Lansdowne Mall of course!! A million customers can't be wrong  Actually I take that back, ANY dish there is YUMMMMMY. I go there at least once a week.

  6. There is another Whole Foods coming on Cambie Street.  That might help, ah, AFTER the rapid transit line is in.

Really? Anybody know when it's supposed to open? I heard that Save-On was coming instead.

Why yes, as it happens I do know know about it!

Rennie Marketing Systems - http://www.rennie.com - has began promoting a new development called Cross Roads, on Broadway at Cambie. You can view it here:

    http://www.crossroadsvancouver.com/

It will be anchored by a GIANT Whole Foods store. If you go to the Media section on their site, there are related 3 articles. The most relevant however is from Business In Vancouver which gives the date of "mid to half 2008". You can read it here.

Can I borrow half a million from somebody? I'm good for it! Honest!

  7. How passive can you be to not say "no thank you"? And yes, markup of 400% is a tad over the line, but its their restaurant and they can mark it up %1000 if they wanted to; its their right. Nobody puts a gun to your head and makes you go to eat there or order their wine. Vote with your wallet, as it were. I am pretty sure there are a few other restaurants in Whistler...

  8. So here’s the drill. I am going to Israel on business mid-May. Very short trip, so I can try out 4, maybe 5 restaurants in the Tel-Aviv and Jerusalem areas. I’m from Vancouver, Canada, and I get enough of excellent food here, so I am looking for authentic Middle Eastern flavours. Suggestions? (Also perhaps you can let me know the general pricing of the dishes so I am prepared  )

    Thank you so much!!

  9. Has anyone heard of the Santa Fe Cafe in Richmond? Seemingly the chef is HK trained but spent time in San Franciso. I've herad they have a good wine list, steaks, and foie gras. Could be an option if true?

    Cheers,

    Stephen Bonner

    Santa Fe Bar & Grill

    6091 No.3 Road, Richmond

    God bless Google.

I will try it tonight and report back! Stay tuned. Same bat time, same bat channel.

  10. Last week, I had dinner with some friends at Felico's in Richmond. We had a bottle of red wine and started with the calamari and fried oysters. For my main, I ordered the lamb souvlaki, rare, and that's how it arrived. However, my friends ordered steaks and souvlaki dishes--all rare or medium rare--and every plate came well-done to the point where the meat was kind of tough. (We weren't a large party...only six of us that night.) Also, we had to ask for the bill three times over the span of 35 minutes before we received it. The server was nice enough to do separate checks for us, though. The restaurant wasn't too busy...maybe half full, but there only seemed to be two servers working and they seemed to have too many tables to wait on!

I think this one is totally your fault. Why would you go to a white people's restaurants in Richmond :raz: But also, I try avoiding restaurants where a double murder has been committed  ! Such as Felico’s. Anyhoo, try Mad Greek (8180 Westminster), I find them to be much better than Felicos.

  11. A two for one: venting spiel and a review. First the spiel.

So I called Wild Rice to make reservations for my birthday (late/mid November). First the lady on the phone says they don’t take reservations. Fine, I can live with that.

“Wait a second, maybe we do, let me have my manager call you.”

Alrighty. Next day (!!!), phone call from the manager.

“Hi, we usually don’t take reservations unless it’s for a party.”

Is 12 people enough for ya? It’s for Saturday.

“Well you see Saturdays are very busy for us and we usually don’t take reservations…” and blah blah blah “ok fine. But require a deposit.”

    Excuse me?

“We need your credit card just case you don’t show up.”

And if I don’t? Do you just steal money from my VISA?

    “We will deduct $400.”

 WTF????? Excuse me?? This is the biggest load of BS I have ever experienced in my dining ventures. EVER! If you are SO friggin busy that you don’t take reservations, then fine, just say that. No big deal.

BUT if you are SO BUSY THAT YOU DON’T TAKE RESERVATIONS, then you shouldn’t have a problem giving my table away in case I don’t show up, instead of fleecing me of $400. I am not making a reservation for a date here. It’s for a BIRTHDAY party for 12 freaking people. Why would I make reservations if I don’t intended to show up??? Where am I going to feed them? Take my best 12 friends for a birthday party at the local Burger King?

Suffice to say it will be a really, really cold day in hell before I go to Wild Rice, with or without reservations.

    Thank you for listening.

So I called Hamilton Street Grill for the birthday party and received the outmost gracious service. And hey, they DO take reservations. Here is the review.

My memory is slightly skewed due to the amount of wine and liquor I consumed  I had the beef capriccio, which was good, and the hanger steak, which was even better (MMM MMM orgasm). The sweet potato fries ROCK (even though they are a tad on the limp side). I believe some of the other dishes around the table were mussels, pasta, salmon, salad, and New-York steak. All of which were excellent. The wine/liquor list is very reasonably priced. Most importantly, the portions are a GOOD size and nobody remained hungry at the end of the dinner.

I only have two tiny peeves (really small).

I think a restaurant gets extra points when it recognizes a client’s special event. After all, the client chose them for his/her special event and it would be excellent PR for the restaurant to acknowledge this. Perhaps a dessert on the house for a wedding anniversary dinner, or a drink on the house for the birthday boy. Hint hint, wink wink, nudge nudge…

The second peeve is more serious though. While I really appreciate attentive service, there’s a fine line that crosses into servers riding my ass like we’re dating. Being asked if I decided what to drink/eat every 2 seconds is not my idea of attentive service. On the flip side however, the gentleman was prompt at bringing us our dishes/drinks.

I cannot wait to go back to the Yummy Hamy!!!

  12. Just to play the devil’s advocate, but how many ways can you grill a steak? How many more steak joints does Vancouver need, and more importantly can support, especially the size of Saltlik? It is much easier to create an appearance of a busy place when you can sit 50 people instead of 200+, especially during the slow season. Just wondering how it will go for them…
