About Me

I've been baking since I was in grade school, starting with cookies. My mother never understood my obsession with sweet baked goods. Nor did she understand the science behind the baking. When I was 12, I had my friend Jill Levinsky over, and I convinced her that I could bake chocolate chip cookies. My mother had to use some egg whites for something, but she had a few egg yolks leftover, so she made us use those instead of the whole eggs. The cookies never cooked through and were left a soggy yellow mess on the cookie sheets. Jill never did believe that I could make cookies. Of course my mom is the sort of mom that believes you can substitute vodka for white wine in a recipe, because they are both alcohol, and are clear.

I grew up and went to school in St. Louis and ended up majoring in both English Literature, and Painting. Both useful degrees in communicating ideas, but lousy degrees in making money. Several years after I finished undergrad, I went back through a graphic design program, marrying my two loves of the visual and the verbal.

I relocated to San Francisco in 1998 (right around the dot com boom), and worked various graphic design jobs. I had left my family and my old life behind in St. Louis. San Francisco beckoned though, and I am happy to call it home.

I currently work as an Art Director at an Ad Agency, which works exclusively with non profits. I love my job (though it has it moments - what job doesn't) but often think of going back to school to be a pastry chef. I love baking and try to hold two to three "dessert parties" a year where I can bake three days straight and feed all my friends.

And Jill, if you a reading this, I really can bake a damn fine chocolate chip cookie. Drop me a line, and I'll make you one.
