  1. I've been reading about many different types of food on Main St....are there any E-gulleters who can give a quick run down of what's available? I know there are a few soul food, Caribbean, and Latin places. Where are they, and which ones are the best?

  2. I am (was) a big fan of AHD. The owners were very open about their initial effort to open a new business and I think they really used Egullet to build their business, with good results! I'm kind of mystified by the complete silence....What's going on?

  3. Wow. Talk about serendipity! I drove past China 46 with a friend over the weekend, and was completely bemoaning the fact that it's closed, and I had eaten a great Chinese New Year meal with E-gulleters.....wah,wah, wah....

Anyway, I also go to Chengdu 1 in Cedar Grove.

  4. How was everyone's Thanksgiving? What were your culinary highlights (and lowlights)?

I was very pleased with my turkey this year. I placed a mess of onions, carrots, garlic cloves, fresh thyme, in the bottom of the pan, and kept up a continuing stream of broth. The veggies carmelized, which helped to give the turkey a beautiful brown during basting, and lent the gravy an unbeliveable color and taste. I was pleased. (and I'm usually my own worst critic)

Did anyone eat at a restaurant that served a particularly good meal?

  5. I believe there is a thread for Sabor Peru in Rutherford, in fact I am usually singing its praises. It's located on Highland Cross (right off of Park Ave. near the center of town) Closed on Mondays, and it's BYOB.

I've been there at least 4 times and I love it. I try something different every time I go and I've never had a clunker so far. It's a tiny space, so if you're looking for a Friday or Sat. eve. dinner, reservations are recommended. It is a friendly and sometimes noisy space. (during peak times) That doesn't bother me. I highly recommend it. (Plus, it's right down the street from where I live!)

  6. OK, egulleters. Here's a question. Do you have a local joint, fancy restaurant or local deli where the proprieters or wait staff make you feel truly special?

I had a "a-ha" moment last night after another great dinner at Sabor Peru in Rutherford. Dave and Horatio made me and my friend feel like we were the jewels in their restaurant crown. I am a complete cynic, so they must be pretty genuine. It made me also appreciate the people at Terry's Coffee Shop in Union City, who used to fill my coffee order before I even opened my mouth. I know I am a customer and a consumer, but to have that extra bit certainly helps.

  7. People in Oakland:

    A) Need another food store besides the insane experience of Shoprite on the hill.

    B) Would like a "Market Basket" experience without actually going there.

I've grown up in Oakland, and have been to Zeytinia twice, and it's just not hitting it.

  8. I wasn't thrilled, either. I thought there was alot of produce spoilage, too. The 'salad bar' just didn't look appetizing. Green Mountain Gringo salsa was a good price...so I picked up a couple. That was my excitement.

I really like the chandeliers, though.

  9. At a local Peruvian restaurant in Nj, I've had the ceviche served with a couple of big chunks of white and sweet potato to temper the citrus. I just love it, but wouldn't attempt to make it myself. It's more fun to go out. (in this instance, anyway)

  10. Thank goodness we all made nice. I thought it was going to come down to a duel: BBQ at 100 paces. Can we get back to eating now? I'm ready for my first take out today, I'm going to visit mom after she gets her daily radiation treatment. THIS will cheer her up, as she is a big Silver Oak Bistro fan. See you later!

  11. By the looks of the storefront on their blog, it's across the street from Ice Cream Charlies....the place had an "Ebay" store, and before that, a small business that made fancy cakes.
