  1. Thanks mkjr. We'll probably give Casa Mia a shot. We need to book one more dinner and we'll play it by ear there I guess. We'll have a lunch at some winery restaurant, probably Hillebrand since I've heard good things and the wine is equally good.

Just didn't want to end up at Hard Rock Café or Kelsey's like last time.

  2. Hi, my girlfriend and I will be back in NF in june for the annual wine country pilgrimmage. While most lunches will be taken in NOTL, we're hoping to find some good restaurants in NF for dinner. I know the city is dominated by chains of saturated fat and huge portions but is there such a thing as a good restaurant.

I've heard good things about Casa Mia and 21 Noir. How about Wolfgang Puck? Any good idea will be appreciated.

  3. Avoid Pizza Regina at any cost. Went there last summer based on the reputation of the place and was disappointed. First we had to wait on the street but that's all right, it's lunchtime after all. When we got seated, the waitress came to our table asking "What do you want?". How 'bout a menu to start? The pizza came quick but the pops were terrible and flat. The restrooms are dirty and stinky. Also, they state in the menu that their sauce is made only with fresh California tomatoes. Then why did I see a delivery truck loaded with cans of tomatoes dropping boxes in the warehouse part of the restaurant?

I've had pizza in a lot of places and this was one of the worst. Sorry to say but Pizza Hut is better.

  4. I really enjoy Byblos on Laurier two blocks west of Papineau. Iranian restaurant with nice atmosphere, great hot chocolate and home preserves as well as a feta omelette to die for. Prices are cheap but go early as it gets pretty crowded after 10. Open for breakfast sat. and sun. only.

  5. I agree with Vinfandel for the most part except that we completely equal in the quality of cheeses as France and In terms of pastries, there is one spectacular place in Montreal.

The pastry chef at L'amandier on Laurier and Fabre is truly an artisan of pastry. A small establishment that has produced some of the best pastries i have tasted in my life. The change in ownership a couple of years ago did wonders for the excellent quality of fresh pastries. From their flaky croissants to their creme brulee, every selection has surpassed my expectations. Unfotunately for me, I live close to this store so it has been a challenge for me not to visit it more than once evey couple of weeks. Delicious!

I feel your pain, I walk by the place every day on my way back from work. I have to fight the tiny voice every time I walk by the place. Each pastry is amazing and the cakes are to die for. I've tried the macaroons and man, oh man!!!

  6. Jean-Talon all hands down although it is better in the summer. Don't eat too much and get an ice cream from Hâvre-aux-glaces whicch is the best in town. There are some cafes with food as well as some Arab places with great kabobs. If you towards Jean-Talon st., you'll find Alep and Petit Alep, iranian inspired cooking, very tasty and not too expansive. You're also in the Little Italy so you might want to look for some italian.

  7. I've been in the web business for over six years now and sometimes no site is better than a site that doesn't give you anything to chew on which is exactly what this one is. Besides, however daring it is, I just can't get used to that horizontal scrolling and I'm always on the Web, I mean always (more than 40/h a week). If a restaurant is to have a site, the least they can do is post the menu. The same problem can be stated about Le Jolifou's site unless they fixed that problem recently.

    Note: Edited for spelling

  8. Actually, the gift card promotion ended last week. But what I heard is coming up is 10% discount for a purchase over $100 next weekend (dec. 9-11). I just finished my classes at SAQ Connaisseurs and the teacher told us that there won't be any bocing day promotion because it gets too crazy. They'll have 2-3 different promotions instead from now to the new year. He didn't go into details.

  9. We also went on sunday. Two long lines were formed outside but the wait wasn't too bad. I also think that the value wasn't that great for the 10 dollars we forked out.

Some were unimpressive and others were nice. I liked the 80% that the guy from Dorval does. It's smooth and rich without being too "roasted". Good chocolate.

The funny story now. We're at the kiosk of the store that's on Laurier neart St-Hubert (forgot the name) and there's this older lady who sees the tasting bowl of Valrhona. She grabs a handful and says: "My hubby loves this one". She comes back seconds later for a bigger helping stating: "This one's good for your health. I looked at the girl who tended the kiosk and we burst out laughing. Some people just don't know how to behave I guess...

  10. Le Fromentier all hands down.

sf&m, you have to visit the Laurier Street location as they have a wider selection of bread and pastries for breakfast. The Empereur croissant, which is an almond croissant mixed with chocolatine, is to die for. They also have really good pizzas.

And as if that weren't enough, they share the location with La Queue de cochon that carries a lot of saugages and one of the best home smoked bacon I've ever tried. There's also a cheese store in the same building.

  11. My girlfriend and I went last friday based mostly on this post. We were not disappointed. We got there at 8:30 and it was packed. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, the room is softly lit and I kinda like the toys on the tables. I played with our robot for a while waiting for the apps.

My girlfriend had the quail with this delicious sauce made of fresh cream, roasted garlic, lemon and cumin, amazing with the quail. I had the portabello salad with cheese. The grilled portabellos were tasty, well roasted and still juicy. A good start.

For mains, I had the Côte de veau, what an amazing piece of meat perfectly cooked with it's juice running in the bottom of the plate and a side a corn salsa of some sort, it was really good. The girlfriend had the duck with a balsamic reduction which was a little too tart to her licking. The duck was excellent though.

As for dessert, I went for the panna cotta with the cider caramel. Velvety, vanilla heaven. I love this stuff. My gf had the 3 spices crème brûlée which was good but a little too sweet for me.

The wine list is short, but concise and the prices are reasonable. We will definitely return as it's a 10 minutes walk from home and a lovely place to eat. Can't wait to try the cornish game hen.
