  1. I don't consider it experimentation - he's testing the waters with things he observed in Japan, where quite every possible permutation exists, but stateside, with varying success, as Japanese service (or lack thereof) succeeds because there are obsessive compulsive Japanese PEOPLE behind it

  2. Will be in that area next Friday with six family members (all adults) around lunch time. Any suggestions for lunch? Some of the group will be staying at the Brooklyn Bridge Marriott, but we can travel anywhere. One or two might want lighter fare. Thanks.

Follow the Manhattan bridge downhill to Pearl St, Superfine - superfine lunch!

Superfine is a bit blah - mostly sandwiches and nothing really that great. Only marginally better, but still pretty meh, is Water Street Restaurant and Lounge. Some of their specials can be pretty tasty, and everything is competently prepared, although at times it reeks of Sysco. It's above average "average food". DUMBO is pretty much a wasteland during the daytime.

My suggestion would be Queen in Brooklyn Heights (near the Marriott) or perhaps Frankie's Spuntino on Court in Carroll Gardens - both Italian. Most of the neighborhood is quick and simple lunch or dinner only.

For the most part agreed but their steak sandwich is really fantastic, but I guess 6 people aren't going to all eat that.

So go to Grimaldi's, just head over there on the early side

  4. Nicely written report, seems like cheap eats are a must in this economy and with a family... that said, my advice is to research WHAT to order at some of these places. The decor is a throwback in Eisenberg's, but so is an egg cream and a pastrami/corned beef half'n'half.

Don't call it the Metro, people are going to think you are from Boston... it's the train or the subway or at worst, the MTA stop, but that's not a 3-letter acronym that is uttered with admiration by any NYer

I hope you're eating some good dim sum right now....

  5. not a fan I take it?

They were obviously selling those slices at a loss. That said, I think their crust sucks. I'd rather enjoy that quantity of oil and carbs as beniets or even a freakin' funnel cake is better. Top is yummy tho. Haven't been in a while

But, witness the iphone 2.0 lineblogging - our young generation is definitely doomed. Their myspace-wired useless brains only comprehend internet buzz, not the taste buds they possess. Hence a pizzeria that actually doesn't suck in the EV is like the next coming of christ

  6. Where should I go? What should I do? Of course I'd like to go where IT is at, but IT in my experience takes reservations in advance at least one month to the day and I have no such luxury.

I would start by abandoning the notion that you need a 1-month advance reservation go to where IT is at - you're a solo diner so you should be able to fly standby and get into lots of those types of places ANYWAY, but some of the best IT places are not on opentable and might not even take reservations - take the Totto/Aburiya empire for authentic non-sushi Japanese.. perhaps the pre-eminent IT place right now requires a tortuous morning ritual, but you might be able to get in there too...

  7. credit to Matt Cerrone, Metsblog

"The Mets and ARAMARK have announced a partnership with Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG), ‘to transport its culinary talent and expertise to Citi Field.’

According to a team press release:

“Among the dining choices USHG will offer at Citi Field are the enormously popular Blue Smoke and Shake Shack, as well as two new food concepts – a taquería and a Belgian fries stand.”

Additionally, the Sterling Club will feature several different dining options, including a casual cafe and market, in-seat service, a dining lounge, and a beer and win bar featuring specialty brews and an extensive selection of wines from around the world.

…this is great, but i will truly be impressed when i see Double Simcoe on tap…right, Johnny G…"

  8. Anyone else been to East Market?  Sounds like it's worth a try!

I _tried_ to go. Walked down East Broadway. Checked numbers. Found the little internal alleyway. Found the playground, entered across from the playground. It was a Chinese mall!!! We walked further and hit the vegetable stands under the Manhattan bridge (which in and of itself was a scene. Especially the vegetable crates of what we thought was DVD porn closer to Canal). My gf and buddy were pretty starving and I looked like an ass, so we gave up.

Went to 88 Palace, which I hadn't been in about 5 years. It's not bad at all. The har kow and shumai were great. They've taken to the practice of having a manned station that offers a few things you can get from the cart and then a bunch of cauldrons of stuff you can't get from the carts. I got some chinese vegetable and chive dumplings from them. I don't dig on the stinky tofu and some of the brown-sauce cauldrons or the snails, but I'm sure they're good as they were going at a regular rate. But we arrived at 1pm so I think we missed the main rush.

When all else fails I end up at 88 Palace or Golden Unicorn...

  9. I've been back to Mitsuwa several times.

I've begged people to drive me to Edison. You heard me correctly. I think these words have never been spoken (or written) before...

No car and stupid gas prices = lack of NJ fun

And yet you never ask me!

ok, you buy gas and I'll buy jalebi, deal?

Just go ahead and start the thread... "If you are keen to indian food, you bloody well get to new jersey!"

  10. Anybody visited Five Napkin Burger (5NP) yet? Worth a shot? Looks like the menu is burgers, sides and sushi. A very "American" place from a French enterprise, no?

5NP was opened by the Nice Matin folks and features variations on their signature namesake dish, a $15 10oz burger that apparently requires 5 napkins to clean up from.

I for one and over the whole burger revival thing. It's getting kind of ridicurous.

  11. I have never been to Aburiya Kinnosuke.

You should definitely give it a try. I also wonder how Matsugen's soba compares to Soba Totto. The whole Aburiya group are very authentic Japanese that seem to operate outside of the NYC dining "scene" for better and not so much for worse.

  12. Overall, the quality of ingredients was very high. Preparations were extremely precise. It is not that outrageously priced. Quality reminds me of the likes of Sugiyama in their hayday.

Perhaps not outrageous, but "Reconceived for leaner times"? I'll definitely check it out - JGV is very serious about his Japanese food as are the Matsu brothers... however, the trend for the past 15 years in Japan is to reject the "bubble" economy and make high-end Japanese food more attainable for shrinking salaries and expense accounts.... however, in big cities all over, Japanese food is immediately equated with expensive even though quality ingredients are far more readily available than before.

Not that this necessarily applies here. Sounds like you really enjoyed. Have you been to Aburiya Kinnosuke before? I'd love to compare the 2.

  13. The soba's not actually outrageously priced, but a lot of the rest is. I guess I'd go for the soba, unless someone else would like to drop $65 on a seared otoro appetizer (which I had at Hagi this weekend for $8.. I just don't think Matsugen's is 8X better.)

  14. Well for $3.75 a pop, 138 Mott delivered. Not enough sweet and sour going on, and they said they would make it hot, and they put these peppers in that basically had me breathing fire in short order, but I tried a pate and a sausage one, the sausage was really nice chinese sausage, the pate was good too, both had sliced pork in them, was pretty happy with it and considered them better than 368 broome.

    So I guess it's between those 2?

I'm going to Japan and I'm not coming back until Bobby V is with me. This has to end.

  15. Yah you know I had that last time, and it was great but I felt there was too little filling compared to the bread ratio, and wasn't that spicy, so I tried the 138 Mott place this time, I will report back, but they look pretty good, and damn, $3.75 it's a pretty good deal

tonight's the night we turn it around. if not, it's time to clean house

  16. Can I get a clarification on which is the current reigning Bahn Mi stud? Is it 138 mott? Or 369 Broome? Or neither? I'm in Soho, can head east, need to pick one up to take out to the game, which yes, I'm better off stopping off somewhere on the 7 to pick up, but that's not much of an option today -

    TIA....

    - raji

  17. Damn brokers. Leeches!

N.B. I've never heard a NYer call it "central" Village - rather "the Village/Greenwich Village, NYU-area" as NYU is pretty much a majority land owner in that exact area, 6th to bway houston to 14th
