  1. Hello, I am about to head out to the Midwest for a week, and while I am there, my inlaws are having a friendly Appetizer cook-off for Memorial day. Rules are it has to be smoked or grilled. My interest is in finding an ingredient that might not be readily accessible in Missouri but that I could grab in NY and transport through LGA, that would also take well to smoking. Any suggestions? I havent been around these forums for a while, so forgive me if I am committing some forum error by asking this.
  2. The produce market is M-F 12 AM to 3 PM. Closing friday afternoon at 3 opening late Sunday at midnight. Fish market is 12 AM to 9 AM, same daily schedule as the Produce market.
  3. Just called Produce market and Fish market. Open to the Public (fish market said "retail customers are not prohibited....."). Hours are funky funky. Basically they open Sunday at midnight, are closed at 9 am. So weekends are a no-go, as they closed friday morning at 9 AM. Thanks for the advice. Looks like it will be a very odd pre-work trip someday.
  4. Cool. Thanks. I am actually further up. I'd be headed south to get to the BX6, and I am assuming that at the hour I would have to go, traffic wouldnt be a huge issue. I had poked around on the website, which certainly makes it obvious that, well, they arent too Average Joe friendly. Didnt know if there was maybe an off-the-books way around. I'll ask their webmaster. Thanks.
  5. I'm just a regular old human being interested in going to Hunts Point, specifically the Fish Market. I live in Northern Manhatthan, and with the..new?..BX6 bus I think it's a straight shot. Question is...can a normal old person just go there and do the fish thing or is it a wholesale only operation? I gotta go crazy early as well, right?
  6. As I am just starting out with the wine thing...... Is it only worth saving wines to age if they are...well....expensive? We generally go to the wine store, pick something for dinner (10-15$), bring it home and pop it open. But, if there's something in this price range that we like, is it worth buying a bunch, and seeing what time does to it? Or are these wines designed for the very purpose we are using them? Will a 12 dollar pinot do anything...interesting...over the couse of a few years? Forgive my ignorance, trying to do something about it, and the advice I've been getting here is exactly what I'm looking for.

    Where to next

The Fiance and I are looking to move on to dry whites other than Gruners. The very helpful woman at our local wine shop in Washington Heights steered us to a great Australian Semellion Sauv. Blanc blend which we enjoyed very much. Any other suggestions? We like the minerally aspect of both of these.
  9. If this thread hadn't've been bumped, I would never've know about this place, and that it's.....20 feet from my office. Went there for lunch. Had the Menkui Ramen. Yumsville. And super fast. It takes the deli down the street longer to make a tuna sandwich. The pork was glazed with...something. Anyone know what? I fear I will now have to work my way through the menu.

    What next?

My fiance and I are relatively new to the wine world. Really only been doing it, with a consciousness, for the past year. We've moved from merlots to pinots to malbecs and now are oddly stuck at gruners. We dont have a ton of money, so we're going with a wide undertanding of the lower end. We've been buying out, instead of up. Kind of in that place where our non wines friends think we are wine snobs, but our few friends who know wines (who work in the wine business) find us charmingly retarded. How do I educate myself? I find myself being at a point where I'm not exactly sure what I'm tasting, and would love....maybe.....a book or something. It feels like I really need to drink a bunch of wines with someone who can talk me through them.....but that's not available. So how can I do that for myself? Or CAN I do that for myself. Thanks.
  11. I agree, cept when it comes to delivery. Their delivered pie it sloppy. I've even asked for it cripsy, like in the store....but no dice.
  12. Il Floridita 177th and B'Way. El Malecon 175th and B'way. Floridita's tends to be more consistent, as Malecon is REALLY busy and sometimes forgets the pickles. No Mayo on either. Flordita also gives you an option to have house roasted pork. Neither of them are particularly fancy, both are under $5 and worth the trip on the A to 175th.
