  1. Thanks, serpentine! I forgot about Ida Mae's - great idea. Mrbigjas, I adore Apamate! I should have clarified that the places I listed are places I've already been to. When baby girl was in utero, I would satisfy my chocolate cravings with some of their divine churros y chocolate. Yum yum...and I was lucky enough to attend Shola's dinner event there a few months back. A return visit is surely in order, regardless of what we do for my birthday.
  2. I don't want to go through the process of making my own gyro meat; do any fellow E-Gulleteers know where I can purchase it in Center City? I love getting my gyro groove on when the St. George's festival comes around or when we go to Effie's, but I'd also like to cook it at home. Please let me know if you've found a place that sells it.
  3. My birthday is coming up and since my favorite meal is brunch, I'd like to go out for a birthday brunch. Our four-month old daughter will be joining us. Since we'll have the baby girl with us, I don't think Lacroix (or somewhere equally as nice) is appropriate. I'm looking for something more casual. We've already been to the following popular spots and are looking for something new (and baby-friendly) - any suggestions? Sabrina's (and Sabrina's 2) Morning Glory Carman's Honey's A Full Plate Cafe Cafe Apamate Marathon Mixto Thanks!
  4. My sister and I were in the mood for dessert last night and headed to Dessert on S. 6th Street. When we arrived and saw that they were closed, we headed over to Cafe Sud. It was about 8 pm and we were the only ones in the dining room. The server was warm and friendly; the desserts all looked delicious. My sister opted for the grilled pound cake with frozen red raspberry mousse and I had the first slice of a freshly baked cranberry-blueberry pie. My sister also ordered a Moroccan fruit juice, which turned into a funny scene. She's highly indecisive, so after finally picking a flavor, she was told that it wasn't in season. We chuckled and then picked a new flavor. Next thing we know, the chef, Moustapha, came out to tell us that they were all out of that. He helped my sister come up with a yummy concoction that he made special for her. He also gave me a complimentary pour of this fruity smoothie-like drink. It was tasty! Back to the desserts, though. The grilled pound cake was divine. The cake was light, and the grilling made the outside just a little crunchy. Combined with the frozen raspberry mousse that was just slightly melting from the warm pound cake, well, it was like a bite of heaven for me. I had the pie, which was also wonderful. The berry mixture was a good combination of tart and sweet and the pie crust was probably the best I've ever tasted. Before we left, I looked over and saw that the empty spot from my pie slice was now filled with juices from the pie. I'm smiling just thinking about it. The inside of the place is small, but charming. The service was nice, and we chatted for several minutes with the server. It was a great mix of charming service, atmosphere, and wonderful food, in my opinion. I have plans to go back for dinner with my husband to sample the Moroccan influenced dishes and I hear the brunch is great, too. I was surprised to see that there wasn't more discussion of the cafe on this board, so I thought I'd add my two cents since I thought it was some of the best dessert I've had in a very long time.
