  1. We had two sakes with the Trio of Sashimi and Tuna Five Ways

don't mean to nitpick, but the kubota hekijyu is the first image and the second one is the hakkaisan.

i recognize the kubota because right after the niigata earthquake i attempted to drink all the kubota manjyu left in SF. i didn't succeed, but i also don't remember most of that month either, so it all worked out.

oh, and the last character on the hakkaisan label (the one that looks like space invaders) is the one for "mountain." you'll see it all around chinatown SF on signs as part of the "gold mountain" (kumsan in cantonese?) name.

  2. Just made reservations for my wife and I to visit Urasawa on Tuesday. We're definately looking forward to it!

One question, does the $250 per person cost include a built in tip (ie, no extra payment expected), or is an additional tip arrogantly added on  (French Laundry style), or is it just classic tipping at diner's discretion?

Thanks to all the reports (and photos) from posters to this thread, especially jeffj and jschyun. We wouldn't know about Urasawa without you!

The $250 does not include tip. The tip is left to the diner's discretion.

  3. I'm taking a trip out to San Fran and the Cali coast in July.  I'd love to know some good sushi places.

    Are reservations a must?

these are the top three on my list:

    ino

    hamako

    koo

in that order. koo is less traditional than the other two and if you want to eat omakase style, i'd call a day ahead to let them know so they can plan ahead and buy things.

let me know if you need addresses to these places. i'm feeling quite lazy right now.

  4. Ino is good, as is Kiss.  Both hold 15-20 people depending on how the tables are setup.  There are more cooked dishes available at Kiss and more raw options at Ino.  I've enjoyed my meals at both places.

I wouldn't go to Kiss for the sushi. Their small dishes are outstanding, but I didn't think the sushi was anything spectacular.

  5. I've eaten sushi in Korea more than once. Just to give a sense of scale I'll repeat what I said in a different thread in this thread. I've visited Korea over 100 times since the late 70's and I lived there for about three years in the 90's, I've also been on several culinary tours of South Korea. I'm a sushi freak. There are sushi restaurants with Korean and Japanese chefs who spent years training in Japan. They won't be found in the run of the mill places. In the run of the mill places you will find sometimes decent to good run of the mill sushi that you would find in Los Angeles sushi restaurants that are owned by Japanese or Koreans. Yeah, I've also eaten alot of sushi in LA too. I've also read a few posts on egullet regarding how Koreans can't seem to get the rice in sushi "just so". I've also read the posts regarding the Japanese pride for their own rice and blind tastes tests that resulted in pretty much equal portions of hit and miss identification.

I'm still looking for some websites. I knew alot of them when I was living in Korea, but I jut can't seem to find any now. I'll keep looking though.

Finding good sushi in Korea is not on par with finding good French crepes in Japan.

thank you very much for looking. much appreciated.

  6. Ah, my bad. I assumed that was a regional form of a similar dish instead of a foreign name for a particular dish. I guess I should have used google. Dur.

Yes and no. You'll see when you get there.

    I'll report back.

In the range of Masa. I'm actually scared to eat at really high end places in Seoul. The tabs seem to swell really fast and somewhat uncontrollably. There is a strong message that if you are in one of those places you have no concern for money. And you can't argue the bill either, especially if you are a foreigner.

Eh, I'll be with a gyoppo who speaks Korean pretty well. And she loves to argue. If I get her drunk enough she starts punching too. Good times.

  7. Hweh is sashimi and cho bap is sushi.

It's been about 4 years since I've been to Korea. So off the top of my head I can't recommend specific places. I can point you to some websites that have a few reviews written by expats.

If you're looking for sushi the way it's presented in those photos it will be insanely expensive. It's not that hard to find Japanese style sushi in Korea. I think it's good, pretty much what you would get in California.

Ah, my bad. I assumed that was a regional form of a similar dish instead of a foreign name for a particular dish. I guess I should have used google. Dur.

Could you point me to those sites? Even sites in hangul would be okay.

Also, what do you consider "insanely expensive?" If it's good enough I don't mind spending the money for it.

  8. I just found this at the site I linked to:

Transit passengers waiting for ongoing international flights are asked to go directly to the departure gate of their connecting flight. Those wishing to leave the restricted area must obtain a temporary entry permit. Arrangements for these permits can be made with your airline prior to departure.

hmm... on a trip back from vietnam, in november of 2003, i was able to leave the airport. have the rules changed recently?

  9. You are on crack. I know it. You must be to look for sushi in Korea. Why not look for "hweh" (raw fish) or "cho bap" (literally vinaigered rice, sometimes topped with raw fish).

The sushi sucks in Korea. But we make some mean hwe and cho bap.

hwae is not sushi (i do enjoy hwae dup bap on occasion though). i have not had the pleasure of eating cho bap yet, but although "vinegared rice, sometimes topped with raw fish" might be considered sushi by some, they'd have to possess a pretty broad definition of the term.

so, to be more specific and avoid confusion, i'm looking for good edomae style nigiri zushi in seoul. if you need a definition of "good," please use some of the pictures in this post as a referral:

    thanks much.

  10. I'm going to be in Seoul for two weeks and was wondering if there was any good sushi to be had there. I don't care what ethnicity the itamae is as long as he/she is damned good. Yes, I know it's not really the right time or the right city to be looking for Japanese food, but I have a serious sushi addiction (I spend more on sushi than on rent and I live in SF) and know I will be jonesing for some at least once or twice during my stay there. I speak/read a little Japanese and enough Korean to be dangerous if that helps any.

  11. So I have a four hour layover at Narita airport and was wondering if anyone knew of really good food I could get to without missing my connecting flight. I'm especially interested in sushi (but am open to other stuff) and my price range is probably under $100 US, but if it's good enough I'd be willing to shell out a little more.

Also, if it's a factor, my Japanese is pretty terrible. Nihonjin usually think I'm retarded until they find out I'm American. Actually, that confirms it for some...

  12. skchai - You will notice that I advised against ordering meat at India House.

Another restaurant to try--possibly my number one pick, but based soley on a lunch I had over a year ago--is Sushi Sasabune on King.  Has anyone else ever been there?  It didn't make it on my list because I couldn't be sure if it was a fluke or not... But my lunch there was devine.

    -Emily

Sasabune is in most probability the only sushi restaurant on oahu worth eating at. The Hawaii location is much better than their West LA one. In fact, I'd say Kumagawa-san has surpassed even Nozawa the "sushi nazi."

  13. We will see...when Muffin210 gets back from Hawaii we will set a date and Yuki from FujiTV can make the reservations.....I thought we were going to be able to get Alton to come, but he has to fly to Texas after her book signing.

Hey, I'm from Hawaii. The Sasabune on Oahu is fricking sweet. Way better than the one in LA. In fact, I was just at Nozawa the other week and I'd say it's even better than that shrine. It's actually the only place for really good sushi on the whole island.

  14. umetaro, welcome to eGullet...great avatar by the way...yes its still going to happen. I dont know how many seats we will be able to get, might be the end of the month. Myself and Muffin210 are working on it....

Hiya, thanks for the welcome. The avatar is my cousin's fat headed kid.

So how many are going so far?

I found out what the name of the place is. Totoraku.

here's a loose translation of what that says:

someplace quite far from the center of downtown LA is a lunch place or something.

from the outside looks nothing like a store that is often spoken of. I was surprised by the deliciousness of meat, it is comparable to that you would be served in japan

the first time i went there [this was in the period beforei last went back to japan]

to import beans(?) i went there to eat. it seems that the owner does business exclusively based on word of mouth. it's a small hole-in-the-wall that exists without publicity or marketing. if you're ever in LA certainly please drop by.

what's funny (or sad depending on how you look at it) is i had to get my korean friend to translate that for me.

  15. I was gearing up going to Ino Sushi in San Francisco on my next trip there. However, it appears that the only open night I'll have will be on a Sunday, and it looks like Ino is closed on Sundays.

So, can anyone recommend a sushi joint of similar quality and cost elsewhere in San Francisco that will be open on Sunday. (We'll be staying near Moscone, but anything within a 10-15 minute cab ride would be acceptable.) I've heard good things about KISS! Seafood, but I've also seen a couple of posts that the quality has gone downhill lately...

I should be going there tonight. The last time I was there was about a year ago...

As a warning, there will be pre-dinner drinking going on so any reports back may not be entirely coherent.

Okay, nevermind. They're on vacation until January 14th. I might go check out Koo instead.
