  2. Greetings, There's a neat new cheese shop , 1700 Block West 2nd (south side) The name escapes me (they use to be in Dunbar, always refered to them as "the cheese Ladies) The have French and Quebec Foie Gras (cheaper) P.
  3. Is that really the case here? Are we really Hollywood North in that respect as well? Peter, you scare me dude There are many great forums on tipping already going: The Concept of "Pooling Tips" Waiter's Tip Tricks Tipping for Take-out Feel free to continue the conversation there. A. ← "Peter, you scare me dude" Hey Daddy-A Now I know I'm at home. I thought this particular forum was " the best service in the city" Living in Western society, generally we won't verbalize our displeasure. Tipping is one way of communicating our dis/pleasure with the service. Charlie Trotter's in Chicago(Rob Fennie trained there), ALL staff on salary. Grats are pooled into the collective HR fund. Thanks for the other links, will check out. P.
  4. Greetings, Having been on both sides of the tips for 30yrs "treat others how you want to be treated" I have found the key to being a hit with one's guest , is to determine how to treat them as THEY want to be treated. When I'm on my game, I try and "mirror" the client. If there non-verbal, I try and keep my chat to a minimum. If there up and giddy, I do the same..... NLP, "neuro-linguistic programming " is form of training usually offered to higher end sales, but should/could be considered by industry pro's Grats, We in the industry do lot to screw up the grats system. We often over tip when we are out. Setting a poor example (Pavlov's Dog) I have worked 10 rest. over 30 yrs, I have yet to hear a server who got a poor tip say.."what happened here, what can I learn from this..." They just start cursing the client. As mentioned before, here in Canada , servers are on stand-by to any other career. Up until a few ago, I always tipped 15-20% , ...... One night 6/7 yrs ago, out for dinner with my wife......food was great , service was completely off....I just snapped, left No Tip I had a cold sweet, I can't believe how nervous I was.... I left a large note on the back of the receipt...... I don't think I slept that night, it was bizarre... From that day, after having broke my cherry....I do it regularly, always leaving a note. Recently, out with friends, food great, service just OK, left 10% to the servers, and snuck 15% to the chef and kitchen staff...... Again, had cold sweet, but it just felt right...... Peter

    BYOW

Greetings, There's a great forum going on about Vancouver and BYOW , I believe you started it, thanks. Is your question regarding Ont. BYOW law coming this FEB? P.
  6. rules Government site Only Grandfather licenses such as royal Vancouver Yacht club or any other private club will able you to have your own locker, you can drink it on site, other then this it is illegal to consume any alcohol that is not purchased through your licensee. Bad bad. You will loose your right to be a licensee. steve ← It states that you can't sell "liquor not purchased from a BC Liquor Store" it does not make clear who the purchaser should be. The guest or restuarant?
  7. Greetings, I live in Dunbar and am very happy with the service . I put forth to all, if you find a good rep in any of the stores, get them connected to egullet. "keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer" lol p.
  8. Greetings , I found this earlier........... Mangez posted early Dec....... West Restaurant. Honestly, I never was too keen on this place (been there about 5 times) until last night. I think the wine we brought has something to do with it. A 79 Cheval Blanc tends to make everything perfect regardless. Well, we made a last minute booking and got a seat next to the kitchen at 8:30pm. Not a bad setup as we managed to bribe the chef with a nice glass of wine and our food tasted extra yummy. Corkage was reasonable at $25 considering the decent glassware and decanters.
  9. I have no problem with Cobb's. Let me be clear, they won't get my business. I'm happy that they have raised the bar (on a mass level) and have complete faith in the "market" place . Would rather channel my energy into finding alterantives and or encouraging new ventures to be launched. This site helps, I was unaware of Cobb's use of additives and will further investigate . Thanks.
  10. Greetings,. NO........Let's Welcome Cobb's....... Starbucks helped develop Vancouver's love of "decent" coffee. There's an old story.... if your the onlt lawyer in town , you will starve... When the another lawyer moves in, you both make money. Cobb's will spend the marketing energy to raise the awareness in Vancouver that there is a better alternative to buying bread at Safeway. Terra Breads have done a great job, but limited to the west side. Nows that chance for all closet bakers to dust off old dreams and start competing with Cobbs..... Shortly after Starbucks was on the front page of the Vancouver Sun, for opening across the street from the Calabria on Commercial drive, I decided to check it out. I was at the bar of the Calabria, and asked Nick , what he thought. He said, you walk into Starbucks, and the most exciting thing that could happen, would be a custmer being blinded by the sharp lights and tripping over there shoe laces.........here at the Calabria,,.,,,,,,,someone could get shot lol I laughed so hard......and was commited Cobbs will develop the mass market, there will always be a strong percentage of us , that will be seeking higher ground. This is an opportunity. Check Out Transylvania Bakery Broadway just west of Waterloo, bakes in a wood burning oven, and the owner is a character.... p.
  11. Greetings, First time online with you. Wasted/loved 5 hours today in my bathrobe listening to Duke Ellington and went crazy with joy about this site....(wife and daughter out of town for a few days) Regarding places to purchase "wares" for the kitchen' London Drugs.....hahah hey Paderno set of 3 non stick, heavy based pans set 99.00 1/2 the price of any other store in town. I purchased a Le Creuset knock-off 8litre made in China for 25 bucks.... I couldn't help it (i'm part scotish) SPCA Thrift store Alma and tenth I guess they get the hand me downs from PT Grey and Dunbar Have collected several iron cast pots , grills and skillets for pennies as well as a good selection of cookbooks (all under 2 buck ea.) Winners does from time to time carry Le Creuset at decent prices. Ming Wo on 4 th was blowing out Le Creuset at 1/2 price for a now discontinued colour Not sure if they still have any. From what I have gathered, All Clad's 3 ply format' patten ran out this year. Therefore you will see a lot more companies offering the same products. and or you will see All Clad's prices come down. There are at least 2 new firms offering now, be careful of ones from China Good luck
