  1. A few changes on Denman:

    - Bob and Stella’s Chicken and Ribs is opening in the Olympia Restaurant block

    - KoKo Chocolate Creations opening in the former Capstone Tea location

    - Indica was dark

    - Milestone’s is renovating

    - Cookies by George is still not open but there are signs of activity

    - I didn’t make it as far as Schnitzelz but it wasn’t open last time I walked by

    - Cookies by George has just opened.

    - Indica is papered up and will become something called "ReaL", serving "Urban Chinese Specialty", no idea what that means.

  2. Unfortunately, King Fortune has since closed.  Then came Shota, which was very good (I don't know whether they served dim sum at night).  Sadly, Shota has also now closed.  Hope they open up another decent dim sum place there soon!

Yes, Shota used to serve dim sum at night as well.

  3. Well, it's here. Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot opened earlier this month in Lansdowne opposite Gingeri. Walked by last week on our way to Gingeri for lunch. Very quiet. Apparently, they already have three locations in the Scarborough/Thornhill area, one in Montreal, and one in California as mentioned.

A mildly interesting Dining column by Tim Pawsy in today's Courier (July 12) about a sponsored trip to China and dinner he really enjoyed in large chain restaurant called Little Sheep.

Apparently there is a branch in San Fran (canucklehead do you know it?) and the possiblility of opening one here exists as well.

  4. There's a dessert stall in the food court in Aberdeen Centre. I think it's called Tim's or something. It's the one closest to the Fairchild offices. They make those "Chinese Waffles" (Gai Dan Tsai or "Little Chicken Eggs") and other sweet Hong Kong and Macau snacks like "Egg Rolls" and those thick Almond cookies, I think.

Not sure about mooncakes. Maybe you can try Maxim's in Chinatown. Or even T&T. They may sell the mini-versions year-round with or without the egg-yolk centres as "Chinese Chess Cakes".

  5. Sounds like Cardero's.......... or Lift?

sounds like it might NOT be either of those. Definitely not Monks, and not likely the Sandbar, if the floating Esso station is a landmark. Nothing like that off our deck on False Creek. Maybe your mom was at Coal Harbour? Here's a map of Granville Island...

For very casual, my vote goes to Rodney's in Yaletown, or Go Fish in Kits. For "better", Fish House, or Monks (try upstairs on a Friday or Saturday).

    just my 2 bits.

Thanks Karen, I should probably just ask my dad. I'm sure he'll be able to give me more details.

  6. Bekki,

HERE is a not so recent thread about good brunch places.  Almost all of the recs stand up today ... but to be safe, go to the last post and work your way backwards.

My favorite is still the Cafe Artigiano on Hastings (Downtown) although I haven't been there since the ownership change.

    A.

Excellent chocie! My favourite is the Uovo Napolitano and the yogurt granola cup. The coffee is good too.

  7. The following topic reminded me of my childhood.

    http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?showtopic=99451

I wonder if anyone know where I can buy freshly squeezed cane juice.  I drank this as a child in Brazil. I've tried the canned stuff and it tastes horrible.

In Brazil they had vendors that used a special squeezing machine where they fed sugar canes through rollers and juice came out into a cup.  It operated very much like the old fashion washing machines that had a rolling mechanism to squeeze wet washed clothes.

Before our favourite Bahn Mi place on Kingsway (and Clark, I think) called Kent was turned into a Dosa Palace about 9 months ago, they used to serve cane juice freshly squeezed to order with the the exact machine as described. I would not be surprised if other Vietnamese Bahn Mi places along Kingsway or surrounding area serve similar treats.

  8. Very interesting.  I guess the question now is what sort of bottled water I should use until the new filtration plant is up and running.  Does anyone know the relative hardness of the various bottled waters available?  I think I used Aquafina on Friday.

Isn't Aquafina just purifed (by filtering and reverse osmosis etc) tap water? Wouldn't it be even "softer" than our local tap water since almost all the dissolved solids are removed from it?

  9. Anyone tried Kirushiu sushi on Granville at Nelson? I don't know when it opened, but it looks decent.

It's just a maki roll place with the usual selections, mostly for take-out. They do make them fresh on the spot though; so no pre-made refrigirated stuff sitting around. They are open until like 2 am or something, to feed the bar crowd I guess.

I'm much more curious about "Sonomama Sushi and Grill" (I guess the "Grill" part refers to robata) around the same stretch of Granville on the opposite side of the street. High ceilings and nice decor. Looks like someone spent quite a bit of money on it.

You can get the "Little Fat Lamb" hot pot soup bases at T & T.
