  1. i also loved that mac'n'cheese as well. i could probably find out the recipe for you as the chef is a friend of mine! he's now at the galiano inn and spa. i'll be visiting him sometime this month! my other dish would probably be the sea bass and cilantro congee or the salted pork and century egg congee at congee noodle house. and andrey's wild mushroom risotto with that amazing demi glace at parkside ← Could you really? that would be soooo wonderful!!! yes, I inquired on his whereabouts as I was hoping he was somewhere else in Vancouver so I could still get some of that glorious MnC...wow, you're like, my tastebud double! I also love the seabass congee, and my word, Andre's mushroom risotto? Pure Luxury.
  2. Here's another: the mac'n'cheese that was once at the alibi room. I think it had seafood (lobster and shrimp?) and mushrooms and was super cheesy. Was devastated to find that dish left the menu as did the chef who made it. Know of a similar dish to be found? Please share!
  3. ::beef brisket rice noodle soup ::chopped scallop tobiko cone + wild salmon sashimi + gomaae ::siu loong bau! I like to poke a hole in the top with one chopstick, let some of the steam out, and get the vinegar in there. ::daytime munchies - mcdonald's fries + tartar sauce ::after night of dancing nosh - fritz + mango chutney + garlic lovers dip will return after I mop up the pool of saliva around my desk...
  4. Yes. I'm a faithful Dragonball-er since 1997 UBC dayz (more often nights). Fave cold: Longan or Lychee milk slush. Fave Hot: Black Sesame. Yu-um It's like a less-sweet/drink version of "Tzee Mah Woo" (Black Sesame Dessert-Soup). I've been to so many bubble tea places and find this still the best imo; especially when the owners are in, the bubbles are tasty, chewy perfection! Ask for half-bubbles to enjoy without getting too full!
  5. I was actually quite fond of Random; the food and the people compensated for the tiny uncozy room. Is the Random crew setting up shop elsewhere or was that it for them?
  6. This thread helped get me started..but can someone help me narrow it down further? My relatives are in town and they would like to try some good Korean food (not just BBQ)...which of the restaurants in Vancouver (North Rd is too far, unfortunately) are well-priced and where a large family with quite a range in age can enjoy a meal comfortably (I would think Jang Mo Jib on Robson isn't the most suitable in terms of seating, atmosphere, etc).
  7. I like the crystal-steamed sweet glutinous balls, filled with various pastes (red bean, sesame, peanut), Chiu Chow style. Speaking of which, where the heck is there any authentic Chiu-Chow restaurants around? The only one I knew of (that's long gone) was Cariana in Richmond.
  8. IMO, it all boils down to one thing: butter (or lack thereof).
  9. I've been there once for dinner. The Smoking Dog is in Kits (1889 W.1st Avenue), not on South Granville. The dinner menu is somewhat expensive, although we found the house special (roast of the day or salmon or grilled chicken breast served with Mimosa salad and pommes frites) to be a good value. The atmosphere is warm and cozy and the host is extremely friendly. ← I was told the owner/host recently passed away...
  10. I think Au Petit Cafe is a winner --- I've tried to order on 3 different occasions and each time they were sold out of their bread before 2 pm!
  11. Where can one find heavy-duty rubber aprons, ie. for dishwashers, or those in the fisheries line of work?
  12. Was attracted by the cool exterior, but found the contents didn't live up...The housewares selection is sparse with nothing new or unique (can buy some of these products at various mall kiosks); and there wasn't much of a menu or food display to check out. Would like to hear from anyone who's actually eaten there.
  13. Speaking of drinking chocolates --- has anyone tried the one from Starbucks? Chantico, is it? To Stephen or others- do let me know if the churros are nicer when fresh; they were very cold and hard by the time we were able to get to them (over 20 minutes after ordering).
