  1. my neck of the woods too (when i'm back with ma and pa at least)... had a good meal at the highwayman the other weekend - mutton pudding, hotpot, cheese and onion pie etc. food's always good but for one thing... couldn't the portions be a tiny bit smaller? ok, so i've obviously been down south too long but i would so love to manage three courses at either three fishes or highwayman. am concluding the only way to do it is leave half the food (i've not been down south that long, mind) or share a dish at every course with someone else. like spanielking i would love to see the menus change more frequently. they're so huge with something for everyone but i feel nige could make more of the specials board sometimes. also, think the wine list is a bit dull. it would be nice to see a few rare treats on wine list and menu occasionally. it's such a monster of a place and works like a well-oiled machine - no question about that - but there's so little room for surprise. don't mean to sound whiney. it's a great place, spent £120 on lunch for five of us. i do sound a bit ungrateful don't i! the three fishes and the highwayman has improved lancs eating and for that i am grateful. keep up the posts adey. i'm feeling homesick.
  2. i love this place. feel it deserves a thread. had a terrific lunch today. sashimi set lunch plus mixed tempura, yellowtail collar, pork shoulder teriyaki, and a side of sugar snaps peperonchino all washed down with four bottles of kirin (i had help by the way) £60 or thereabouts. i couldn't have been happier.
  3. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/721b93ca-e1b3-11...00779fd2ac.html ouch, a stinker of a review in the FT. by kimiko barber, not nick lander n.b. barber's descriptions of food, service and ambience bear no relation to my two experiences of sake no hana though i have to say. i would still recommend it and pretty strongly.
  4. Manch doesn't need to beat itself up over lack of stars, no, but i still its non-'michelin' star restaurants never wow me either. the problem with the city for me is that i keep hearing about great places to eat so i go there only to come away disappointed. if i go to nottingham or birmingham for example, it's easier to be impressed because nothing's been oversold to me in the first place.
  5. Michelin in Manchester argument aside, Thom, i'm still not thoroughly convinced by Manchester as a dining destination. of course i don't know it as well as you do, and i haven't eaten at all the restaurants you mention but i just can't get that excited about restaurant bar and grill, piccolino, yang sing. on my most recent trip to manchester, i ate at Grado, and was really disappointed as i thought PH might deliver with this one... i know you'll hate me for saying it, but if i'm in manchester on business and i have time for lunch, i don't think whoopee where can i got eat, wahay. but not been to red chilli so i'll try that next time
  6. i've been a couple of times and can't wait to go back again. drink sake not champers and you're laughing. my bill for lunch was about £85 for two. dinner for two was £140 with including a £42 bottle of sake (but not service). if you're into the big showy offy wagyu dishes then yes it will top £200 and there were no oligarchs in when i was in, just regular folk having a pleasant meal with partners or colleagues. i think it's been misrepresented in the press (based on my two experiences anyway...)
  7. this rising star business is a load of bollocks, that's my mature contribution to the debate. it's nice for nathan and all but it's not so nice for marc at fraiche who's had this carrot dangled in his direction for a couple of years only to be told 'nah'.
  8. clover, don't know anything about transport on the day, but if you're not put off, then i believe the capital in knightsbridge opens on xmas day (2 michelin **)
  9. i had a good meal recently at Zouk tea bar. modern, pizza express-y, but good food
  10. texture's really thrown me a curve ball. went along, had a really average evening there. thought no more of it, then suddenly all these great reviews.
  11. walked past here today - surprised to see they've started doing breakfast. a sample from the menu - boiled duck eggs £5.50, bacon roll £4.95, full english £13.25, birchermüesli £4.00, croissant £2.50 ...
  12. agree with Jon Tseng about textures. it's all crispy and crunchy. i would have loved to have seen a few more explorations of textures soft and wobbly! after cod skin, parmesan, potato and bread crisps to start. more crisp bread came with my first course 'tomato and artichoke textures' and later with the cheese course. oh and bacon popcorn with the pigeon. i was crying out for mercy by the end. in my opinion, the onslaught of huge flavours and crispy crunchiness was way too much. the service on the plus side was very good.
  13. recipe for fernet branca and creme de menthe ice cream in the new st john cook book. am attempting it this weekend. if it's even half as good as at st john i'll be happy
  14. ahh that methi chicken. brilliant. let us know how it goes.
  15. adey73, i'll second that. i love bukhara. it's my family's new favourite. although my mum might put in a vote for victoria's india in longridge. bukhara house special biriani is pure bliss. and the mango salad that everybody seems to have. no booze so go for a big jug of lime and cumin juice. service is brilliant. have you tried the leg of lamb for four?
  16. i'd go for northcote over cassis for sure. my last meal at cassis really put me off. it's partly the wine and water prices that i mentioned. i can't remember the exact details unfortunately, but the constant topping up of £4 (ish) water and the uninspired selection of wines at the lower end of the list made me depressed. i keep hearing warrick dodds is the biggest talent in lancs so maybe i got him on a bad day. i loved my last meal at the longridge restaurant mind you! new look and new chef have done wonders IMHO.
  17. i've been to cassis three times and each time it has been wildly different. the first time i was blown away (alc lunch); the second time for sunday lunch was less good probably because the sunday menu can be on the conservative side (basically a gussied up roast); the last time i went for a la carte on a friday night was dismal. it was expensive, and everything was either incredibly sweet or incredibly salty; service was stiff; wine overpriced, water even more so. i agree the 18.95 lunch is a good deal and the food is interesting enough to make it worth a trip but i can't honestly recommend it at full price. a pity because i had very high hopes at the outset.
  18. apologies if i'm really behind the times here. but does anybody know if el celler has relocated yet? nothing on the website to that effect, but i'm planning a trip and wondering what effects a move will have on their opening times etc.
  19. Thank you thank you thank you! egullet at its best
  20. thanks behemoth. that's just the kind of link i was after. v helpful.
  21. can anyone help with a recommendation for a lunch on december 24th this year in munich? i don't mind what cuisine, or how much it costs...just looking for somewhere that's open on the day. any suggestions gratefully received.
  22. yes, it's heavily french influenced i agree. it's not neue deutsche küche. i'm just trying to give robyn a recommendation of some interesting modern food coming from a german restaurant's kitchen. there are german influences and ingredients in there - but sure, it's got more than a touch of france to it.
