  1. I love Fuji too. The eel there is so good and the sashimi too. The sushi chef there knows what he is doing and you're right, the quality is comparable to manhattan. I'm sad it's so far from me in Morris County. Haven't found much although Fujiyama in Hackettstown has great fish and a good chef.
  2. Holly- I just went to your site for the first time after reading this thread. Great info, thanks. I was wondering if you or anyone else has ever eaten at Big Daddy's Hot Dogs in Little Falls. I passed it the other day and was wondering if it was worth a stop.
  3. The specialties at Gammiok are oxtail soup (suhlungtang) and bean pancake (pindaedduk), which is a large pancake made of mung beans, bean sprouts, vegetables, chili, and garlic. There are also seafood and meat varieties. One order will feed 2-3 people since each person should order one oxtail soup. The oxtail soup is a white soup which is boiled for many hours (over 12?) and the large bowl comes to your table filled with the broth, white rice, noodles, and thinly sliced beef. The salt, pepper, and scallions on the table are added by each diner to their own taste. Korean people have always viewed this soup as a curative, especially for hangovers. There is a 'hangover' alley in LA which has many storefronts with varieties on the oxtail soup. I hope you all go back and try this. I have eaten at the 32nd street location in NY countless times for almost 8 years and I don't think i have EVER tried anything else. It's not that I'm not adventurous, but this is their specialty and 99% of Korean people will be going just for this. If I want other types of Korean food, then I would go someplace else. PS. the kimchee here is famous. people order it, even in LA, and it gets shipped to them. but it is definitely 'country-style'. also, dont expect many small side dishes (banchan) which you will get in other korean restaurants. here its all about the oxtail soup.
  4. Pub 199 in Mount Arlington. It is a dive complete with big bar and neon signs and it has incredibly cheap seafood. Lobster and steak dinner costs about $15 (i think). The place is always really busy with serves running around with lobsters, overflowing plates of steamed clams, beers. They also serve general pub grub like hamburgers, chicken fingers, etc though 95% of the people in there will be drinking beers and eating lobsters or clams. But it is a far drive from Philly....
  5. Going to Montclair tonight and will try Greek Delights from all the good recommendations here. Thanks! My younger stepbrother lives there and we try to take him out from time to time. The past few times, we have tried Mexicali Rose, Thai Chef, and Raymond's. Mexicali Rose was fun but the food was not very good, middling Mexican-American food. The food at Thai Chef was good, not the best, but we have been to Thailand and I thought the seafood curry at Thai Chef was better than almost all I have had in the states. Raymond's was for lunch, very good we thought, with shockingly good coffee. I never had such good coffee in a diner (is it considered a diner?).

    Bula

Thank you for all the recommendations. I tried Bula a couple of days ago and had a nice time. I like that the menu is broad (i guess why they call it world cuisine) and is therefore is good for groups of people with dift taste buds/moods. My husband and I went with another couple- we eat everything, our guy friend eats mostly only chicken, and our girl friend, constant dieter, eats almost nothing. So we could all order comfortably and were v. happy with the results. We had the shrimp cakes, Kingston Scallops, Poulet Mignon. They had salads and Tofu Stir Fry. The shrimp cakes were just good, but scallops and especially poulet mignon were great. The sweet sausage, greens, and potato with tender chicken was a great combination. Our friends said the Tofu Stir Fry was just OK but we had no sympathy as my expectations would not be that high if I had ordered that. Overall, it was a good experience and I would go back. The people at the next table were having some sort of argument throughout our meal, but it had nothing to do with the restaurant. It was slightly distracting, slightly entertaining, I guess. suzilightning- we love any type of cuisine and restaurant as long as the food is good.

    Bula

thank you for this recommendation. we just moved here but i think we only live about 15 minutes from stanhope and 25 minutes from newton. before i found egullet, it was so hard to find a lot of info on restaurants in nj. we were just going with word of mouth or hit or miss (blindly trying out places). what are the prices like at bula? also, have you ever tried the place on 206 that is on the other side of the road from the black forest inn? it is italian but i can't remember the name. it is only a few minutes (north?) from the black forest inn. i have passed it many times but we have not tried it yet.
  8. As someone of Japanese descent who has recently moved to Morris County, I can say with confidence that this is one of the best sushi restaurants in this area. We tried many others and were either not impressed or just plain disappointed. Here, they serve bluefin tuna without us even making the request (standard is yellowfin and many places in this area didnt even know what we were talking about). The sushi chef knows how to make nigiri sushi, maki, and they have great Japanese knife skills. We were so impressed that we asked to compliment the owner who came and talked to us. He told us the history- he used to own a restaurant by the WTC but had to close it down after 9/11. His same sushi chefs STILL go to Fulton Fish Market 7 days a week though. Like most Japanese restaurants in Morris County, the owner is not Japanese, but his sushi chefs either are or were trained in the traditional Japanese style. Highly recommend if you love sushi and appreciate excellent fish and beautiful cuts and rolls. It is also a very understated and pretty place.
