  1. It's so funny, because I think about this a lot. I actually have the idea of a story involving the invention of a particularly French dish that I'm researching now.

And I love a quote/joke I heard a while back. I have no idea who said it, but I believe it was a male comedian in the mid 90's maybe. Anyway, he's talking about food. And he says (paraphrased), "Who's the first guy who ate lobster? I mean, who first saw a lobster and said, 'Hey! A giant bug! I bet that would be good with some melted butter.'" Cracks me up every time I think about it.

  2. For the people who don't already know, you can order a lot of different sodas that aren't available nation-wide at SodaKing.com. I ordered their root beer 'assortment pack' and was really pleased with it. There were a few in there that I had drank before (IBC), but they were mostly new ones (like Jackson Hole). The only drawback is shipping. The weight of those glass bottles really adds up.

  3. Under normal circumstances, I probably wouldn't eat any 'pets'. Although I cam curious as to what they taste like. Definately no simians. Other than that, I'm pretty open. I actually don't like plain cooked beans. Say a pile of pinto beans on a plate - even though I'm a Southerner. (Oh, except black beans - love them.) I like refried beans, bean salad, whatever. Just not a big pile of them slopped on a plate.

Also, the main reason I replied to this is the book Life of Pi. It's a wonderful book in its own right. But it touches on this subject. The brief plot is a Indian boy is trapped on a life boat, and it details how he survives. Part of it is what he eats, and back home he was a vegetarian. Very very interesting.

  4. And I know you're not one either (what exactly do they do anyway?). But I thought you might at least have an opinion about this. My theory (I really haven't done much research yet) is that people developed taste buds way back in the day to tell the difference between good food and bad. (Fresh meat good. Fuzzy meat bad.) And it continued to develop a little more. Am I on the right track here?

Also, is cooked food more nutritious or does it make a difference? (I'm really thinking about the browning effect on meat, but any kind of cooking in general.) Thanks a lot.
