well, Reichl's take is now up at Gourmet (linked too by Eater)...she certainly seems to think so. at least two more egullet members are dining there tomorrow night (alas, I am not among them). and at least 4 already have.

F&F began yesterday. early word is quite positive. several of the dishes have been served in some form at ssam bar while they were working on them.

at least for now, it's really good. part of a party of four so we tried a pretty extensive selection of the menu (btw, this was one of those places which proves that often you're better off not getting a reservation. the only reservation for four available was for 11 PM. we skipped that, showed up at 10 and were eating 15 minutes later.) tried a bunch of small plates...mainly chutney-type items. the sundried tomato and the mildly spiced (my companions will probably disagree) chili were standouts. so was the dullet-minced tripe. also had a bunch of larger plates. jerk pork belly was good...although the jerk wasn't much in evidence. chickpea dumplings were very good...reminding me of gnocchi actually. lamb kitfo was very very flavorful. cocktail list sucks btw. the Kenyan Tusker lager went well with the food though. prices are quite reasonable. go now while it's good.

like say, Barolo, it's a Eurotrash hangout. (but probably with a bit better food than Barolo.) worth going to for the food? no. but if you must go, it's best in the summer with all the sidewalk tables and people watching.

well, if you want to actually TALK to your dates, I suppose. with that said, there are often spots at the bar available late as well.

yeah...I had a "you know you're a cocktail geek when" moment when they presented me with a Ginger Rogers and I was immediately like "Oh, this is that drink by Absinthe in San Francisco"...for a cocktail on the slightly sweet end (about a Jennifer #3 or Tantris Sidecar or Jack Rose level)...it's very nice.

it's been open a month or so now...in the old Grange Hall space. completely packed. they're doing a crapload of covers. cocktail list kind of sucked. saw jiggers and bitters but didn't see them being used. glasses weren't chilled. bar actually has a decent selection of liquors though. small wine list by the glass and the selection wasn't very good. service seemed efficient and friendly. the food's not bad at all but expensive for what it is. price point is the same as say Bar Blanc or Allen & Delancey but the food just isn't as polished (hard to be when they're whipping through 4 times as many covers....a good problem to have but it doesn't justify the prices). there clearly is talent in the kitchen. parsnip soup with cherries and an innocuous touch of foie gras was almost good. the idea was sound...the cherries a perfect accent. the technique wasn't bad either...pureed but with little bits of parsnip left for snap. the problem? tasted way too much of stock and not enough of parsnip. its the same problem I have when making similar soups at home....but I'm not charging for it. veal breast was pretty good...though the veal could have had more flavor. the root vegetables with it (including a parsnip hash) were nicely done. the carrot still had crunch...something which most restaurants flub in dishes like this. portions are generous.

didn't sample the food but they certainly seemed to be doing pretty good business. very young crowd. and, yes, the cocktails are fantastic. some of the usual suspects working.

I like this place...quite a bit. the food is better than it has to be (although hardly earth-shattering), and the cocktail list shows some panache...and they actually use jiggers. prices are very gentle.

four-tops are available for Per Se on opentable virtually any night of the week. two-tops basically never. the stopping in idea sounds like a good one.

oh gosh... go to EMP, WD-50, Tailor... also, go to Ssam Bar one night for a restaurant unlike anything in the UK.

I happened to be in its neighborhood recently and ate at the bar here...sampling items from both the Bar menu and the regular Etats Unis menu. everything was competently and inoffensively executed. it was also very much cooking by the numbers and safe. overpriced for the location. certainly not worth traveling for.

We've already named more than 10 with no bar dining, or a different/limited bar menu, and that was without breaking a sweat. Obviously, as far as trends go, you're right: at most restaurants nowadays, the full menu is available at the bar. The exceptions tend to be at the luxury end, or at restaurants where the bar is non-existent or too small. ← I didn't think places without bars (The Modern, Gordon Ramsay, Jean-Georges) counted.

now to think about it: Del Posto doesn't serve at the bar. still, it's hard to come up with a list of more than 10 places...the list of places where bar dining is easy is much longer.

What about The Modern Bar and Aquavit Cafe? Unless, you consider them to be completely different restaurants from the dining rooms. ← You can get the Bar Room's menu at the bar, but you can't get the Modern dining room menu at the bar. Aquavit is similar.I believe likewise at Adour, Bouley, Café Gray, Chanterelle, Country, Danube, Gilt, Gordon Ramsay, La Grenouille: either no bar at all, or a different menu at the bar. There are probably more. ← The Modern doesn't have a bar. Cafe Gray does serve the full menu at the bar. Gordon Ramsay doesn't have a bar (Maze is a separate restaurant). can't speak as to the others.

Practically every restaurant serves something at the bar, but there are a number of upscale places (not just the four-stars) where it's not the same as the sit-down menu. ← well, GT and EMP...I can't think of any others offhand...(and the vast majority of my dining is done at the bar) ← What about The Modern Bar and Aquavit Cafe? Unless, you consider them to be completely different restaurants from the dining rooms. Nougatine is definitely a different restaurant than Jean Georges. ← I think of them as different restaurants. heck, Bar Room at the Modern has a separate review and rating from the Modern.

somewhat different menus. dinner has more items. pricing is similar.

well, I always prefer the bar but I've never had a problem with solo reservations when I had to make them. other than the four-stars, I really can't think of any restaurants that don't serve at the bar...and usually the full menu too.
