Where have you been in the ID lately?
hungry_moose replied to a topic in Pacific Northwest & Alaska: Dining
Ah strange, I'm glad I had your fish dish then Kiliki. But, I need to go back and try the whole fish with BB sauce -- the waitress said that one comes fried. I bet that is tasty also. I also want to try the ants on trees (it's part of the lunch special!), hand shaven noodle chow mein, some more veggies, and chicken dishes. LaurieA-B: My 23 month old loved the steamed fish and green beans! elswinger: I like Sea Garden fine, they do crab right and their salt & pepper prawns in shell are awesome. The pea vine veggie dish is divine, but expensive. I prefer Sea Garden Bellevue for their nice service. -Moose -

Thank you Kiliki and others for recommending 7 Stars Pepper. It was near where Loong Foong used to be. I been dying to go there after reading your posts and finally made it there this week. We had the schezuan dan dan noodles with hand shaven noodles (YUMMY!), then had the schezuan crab (the best! We cleaned the plate pretty good), then ordered the whole fish with black bean sauce and a dish of garlic green beans. The green beans were perfect! However, they ended up serving us steamed white fillet of fish with ginger/soy sauce with green scallions and cilantro. It was good, but I really went there for the whole fish with bb sauce!! Dough!! The atmosphere was quite cozy and nice once you get inside. If you get the waitress with the brown teeth, make sure you are VERY clear about your order. I hope what we ate was dan dan noodles -- noodles with spicy/soupy sauce. Can someone confirm this for me? I also had a cup of sweet & sour soup (on the house), and it really hit the spot. They were doing a brisk business for lunch and the lunch specials looked to be really great deals! I took my camera for some shots, but as soon as the food arrived, I blanked out and did not remember anything until we were all done. Sorry. -Moose -

hungry_moose replied to a topic in Pacific Northwest & Alaska: Cooking & Baking
Thanks kiliki for the advice about the DBS/DBW. I was always curious about it. No thanks to membership and info. session on DBW or whatever they are called. I hope you get a good deal on your range, wherever you end up buying from. On another separate note, I always enjoyed your posts on eG and chowhounds, your posts are always helpful, nice & polite! -hungry_moose -
[SEA] Inexpensive appliances
hungry_moose replied to a topic in Pacific Northwest & Alaska: Cooking & Baking
If you are shopping for appliances - regular to high-end, it's worthwhile to check out Kent Funiture and Appliance. Don't laugh, it's true. It's family owned and the owner Ken, has close to 30 years experience in appliances and really knows what he's talking about. I have recommended this place to lots of people and they keep going back there. Just go to Albert Lee or others and write down the quoted prices, make a list or a spreadsheet - take 10% off or so and offer it to Ken. Or better, ask for a direct quote for a list of desired appliances and compare to your quote. Ask for a package deal too. Throw in free shipping to most areas and some manufacturer rebates, you will get the best deal in town. Ken has an annual sale every year also and that is the best time to buy, but you will get a good deal any time of the year. Just don't laugh at his furniture when you go there. He really knows his appliances - e.g. JennAire dishwashers will get louder and louder with time. Be sure to call to make sure he carries your favorite brand - not sure if he carries Wolf but he carries most brands. Kent Furniture & Appliance, (253) 854-3000, 1015 Central Ave N, Kent, WA 98032 *No disclaimers - I have no business contacts and nothing to gain from promoting this place. I wish I did get a kick back though. I will shop there again when we build our next home. On another note, if anyone has tried the "direct buying service" please leave a note on whether they are really worth it or not. I keep seeing their ads on TV. -hungry_moose -
USDA trying to shut local dairy Smith Brothers
hungry_moose replied to a topic in Pacific Northwest & Alaska: Dining
I just talked with my friend (one of the Koester daughters) and looks like the mom is flying to Washington D.C. this week to help the case. They are for the protest, but not sure if it will do any good here, most of the fighting is done in D.C. They would like us to continue writing letters in via the website: http://www.keepmilkpriceslow.org/ The deadline is looming and just 7 more days to write our letters in. Koester mom is also having lunch today with Dave Reichert (Congressman). I’ll keep you guys posted if mom or daughters has anything that we can do before or after her trip to the DC. They thank you guys for the support! -hungry_moose -
Yes, thanks for the coupon info! Love their meats and sausages! I think the Roosevelt store is so much better than Bellevue. I guess Bellevue is still fairly new so they need get settled in. I love their hot prepared food bar. Also Whole Kids O's (cheerios type cereal) is the only wheat free, modified food starch free O type cereal - if your child is allergic to wheat. Less sugar than Puffins. -hungry_moose

USDA trying to shut local dairy Smith Brothers
hungry_moose replied to a topic in Pacific Northwest & Alaska: Dining
We’ve been getting Smith Bros. milk delivered for years now. I prefer their milk due to its good taste, no rBST, and it’s from their farm only. Their eggs are good too. Dairygold and others pool all milk and send it out, so it has mixtures from variety of sources (god knows from where). My milkman dropped off the flyer about this issue -- they are forced to pay into the dairy farm assistance pool, which would be over and beyond their annual profits… Funny thing is that my friend’s family owns/runs Smith Bros. She did mention this to me last week and said the milkman would be dropping off the flyers. She said that they would have to sell their milk into the “pool” and buy it back at a higher price. They are truly a small family-run business and not sure how they will handle this. Yes I feel for the dairy & other farmer’s predicament these days, but I also want my pure milk from a single source. And isn’t this against protecting a smaller farm – Smith Bros.? This one’s tough, but I am on Smith Bro.’s side even without the disclosure above. The independent milkmen also make very small margins off the milk and really hustle to make those deliveries! -hungry_moose -
These are great finds! Thanks and please feel free to add Trader Joe's, Met Market or other find as well. I plan on trying all suggestions so far. hungry_moose

I'm a big fan of Whole Foods and glad to be owning their stocks WFMI now. Inspired by Mamster's article Cheese & Cracker, I wonder what's your favorite find @ Whole Foods. Mine is the 3 pack juice box sized Chicken Broth (Whole Foods 360 private label). They are so convenient and no need to reseal the box, they are perfect for single use! Another is the spicy cappacola - it's like peppery, spicy ham - with fresh mozarella + tomato + basil, it makes a perfect sandwich. Please share your find! I am on my way to WF to get the Oaten crackers and that wonderful cheese. Cheers! hungry_moose

Why is the CR King always more expensive than sockeye? Everyone in the seafood biz knows that sockeye is the king (best)! -hungry_moose

I agree those sweet SBUX drinks will give you diabetes. Case in point, their coconut creme carmel drinks from last Summer. I think that had more than 5,000 calories not to mention 50 Tbs. of sugar. Their butter carmel flavor is along the same lines. Nordstrom Cafe adds some weird malt powder in their sweet ice/blended drinks. Anyone know what that powder is composed of? -hungry_moose

A Granita would be perfect now, it's so warm out. I agree -- Frapps, Spins, Ice Storms are all WAY TOO SWEET! Yuck. Blended ice tea sound good too. -Moose

Does anyone know if Lamperia currently has a tasting menu? We walked by there on our way to Cascadia the other day and did not see a mention of the tasting menu on their menu posted outside. -h_Moose

Huh? Cascadia & kids? No! I don't believe it! I won't take my child here.....glad to see it though. It seems that this is a pattern lately....Lola's...Cascadia's...both chefs have small kids, so....but not sure if other diners will approve! hungry_moose http://www.cascadiarestaurant.com/html/me_7.htm

The new May Thai Restaurant in Wallingford sounds great. I just read Mamster's review in The Seattle Times (gotta love his reviews!). Check it out at: Mamster's May Thai Review With a cup of oatmeal, tall decaf vanilla latte & a donut, hungry_moose

Where do you plan on taking your sweetie and dining this Valentine's Day? I am thinking of Cascadia's special for V-day, if it's not sold out already....

Where do you buy your meat?
hungry_moose replied to a topic in Pacific Northwest & Alaska: Cooking & Baking
I never had bad meat from Whole Foods. Love their natural pork sausages also. Expensive, but worth it. I also regularly buy the large tri-tip pack from Costco. This is incredible meat at a great price. It's good in every dish, including BBQ. I take this and grind it with my kitchenaid meat grinder and make my own ground beef. Regular ground beef is too scary to buy nowadays. This tri-tip is lean and moist. I also love their beef tenderloin for BBQ. No matter what, do NOT buy meat from 99Ranch Market, scary stuff. -hungry_moose -
Despite my recent *poor* experience at Monsoon, I decided to give box a try. I'm in the neighborhood for accupuncture every week anyways, what the heck. Service was good and fast. I had the salumi. It was pretty good, the bread - I agree was too crusty and tough. Some spicy peppers would be a nice addition. They should reconsider the baguette. They gave me a big piece of drunken chicken to try, it was delicious! One RANT is that they don't use gloves when making the sandwiches....isn't that a health code violation? Or do all *good* restaurants not use glove when making ready-to-eat food???? hungry_moose

[SEA] Kid-friendly Restaurants
hungry_moose replied to a topic in Pacific Northwest & Alaska: Dining
I'm with you girl chow, I will wait quite some time before going to Harvest Vine or the likes of Lark with my child. Maybe when they turn 18. ha ha. Spunky Monkey, with a name like that, I've got to try it. My kid LOVES smoothies. Goes crazy for Jamba Juice. I make smoothies at home with formula/breast milk+strained raspberries+frozen bananas. It is quite good. Ummm smoked chicken salad, sounds so good. I love smoked whatever. No wonder (he used to be in Greenwood?) -- I work in Kent, and all my co-workers refer to Wild Wheat as the only "non-Kent Style" restaurant in Kent. Kent--where all King-5 reported crimes occurr. Thanks for all the lovely suggestions! Can't wait to try them. hungry_moose -
Yeah, good Teriyaki is almost impossible to find, but when you do, it's so convenient and satisfying. When I used to work downtown (6 years ago), John's Wok In near Western/University Street was good. It's a mini market with small teriyaki set up in the back. They have very interesting flavors such as indian curry teriyaki, etc. It was so so good. I don't know if they are still operating. A nice Korean family owned it back then. Yes, Mexican/hispanic workers are often found in Teriyaki stores as well as Korean grocery stores. Most Teriyaki joints don't have a clue how to make their Teriyaki. It's good grilled (charbroiled is my fav) with a tasty sauce, not too goopy or salty (and the steamed veggies should be alive, not wilted. Salad dressing can make/break it too. Some U-dist joints offer radish kimchee which is a nice touch. In Japan, when you walk into Teriyaki joints, it's smoky, the bowls are filled charbroiled teriyaki meats and sometimes you get a boiled quail egg on top as a bonus. So delicious. hungry_moose
