Different parts of the country are going to have different codes pertaining to "professional" appliances. The codes are going to deal with four areas: Fire prevention Fire supression Ventilation Gas supply #1 Bruce just dealt with ... with that kind of BTU power coming from your burners, you'll be looking at some form un non-combustible surface (tile, stainless steel, etc. ) in addition to 3/4" 1hr fire rated drywall. #2 Means a sprinkler system, not a $20 fire extinguisher. #3 is a double edged sword, because with professional strength extraction you'll need equal levels of make-up air. #4 has to do with the amount of gas coming into your house. You'll almost certainly have to upgrade. You should also consider how heavy the range is. A 60" Garland in your kitchen may require some reinforcements to the floor joists. Is it possible? Yep ... been there, done that. But you really gotta NEED it before its worth it. A.

Ummm, Keith? Nobody has said that Vij's was the best Indian food in the city ... just that they didn't want it included in any suggestions. nwyles is the only one here to have even implied that Vij's was the best Indian. canucklehead even went so far as to say that Vij's wasn't even "authentic" Indian, refering to the French-influence Lamb Popsicles. I doubt even Vikram (my words not his) would say his food is "authentic." Is it good? Damn straight! A.

Full disclosure: I am a Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD) and a member of the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA). Okbrewer, visit The "Find a Professional" section on www.nkba.org. Type in your ZIP and you'll have a list of all the certified professionals in your area. A.

I don't know if I'd label the whole Vij's love-in as "group think." I agree there is some, but for me, the issue is that whenever I ask about Indian food either on this board, or elsewhere (yes, I have friends in the "real world") Vij's, Rangoli & Maurya always come up. Then again, so do the samosas at The Himalaya. True. Similarly, how can one maintain a balanced view by sneering at an establishment that got it right, and continues to do so today? Do we punish the successful? Sam's feelings on Vij's are well-documented, both on eGullet and on the "other" board. I wonder what his beef (or pork or lamb ...) is with Vij's? "Pretensious & overblown" were the words he used. Does that refer to the restaurant or the food, or both? Best post ever. I love the list mzungu. A.

It's free all over town, but can be hard to find. Street boxes are at Granville and Robson, Homer and Smithe, 4th and Burrard, 1st and Commercial, and all around Yaletown. There should be deep drops at Soma and Pulp Fiction on Main, as well as at Granville Books. And of course, there's always www.terminalcity.ca. Dave, you can also try pretty much any Cafe Artigiano ... ever since Sami's put a full page add in TC there's usually a pile by the entrance. Myself? I'm lazy & usually read it online. Bess ... Welcome to eGullet ... looking forward to your take on things here. Really enjoyed the Drinking Guide, especially Jenn's take on Winkerbean's. But isn't covering Elixir, Fiction and Morton's a little mainstream for you guys??? A.

Truth be told: Where've you eaten lately? (Part 1)

Umm, yeah. Rangoli ... gawd I like this place! Damn uncomfortable chairs though The room is one of my favorites in Vancouver (from a designer's POV) ... very open and welcoming. And then you sit down I should qualify this by saying that I've only ever sat on the chairs at Rangoli, never on the benches. Did I mention I really hate the chairs? But the Portobello Mushroom & Red Bell Pepper Curry I had more than made up for a little posterior numbness. The curry comes served on paneer (mmmmmmmmmm , paneer!) with beet/daikon salad & naan. Vikram, if you're lurking, any chance the beet/daikon salad will be available for take-away?? Really nice! Moosh is right about Vikram ... completely grascious, but speaking with him after lunch made me completely forget to pick up some Salmon Cakes and Saag & Paneer for dinner tonight . Now I have to settle for grilled cheese ... thanks a lot! Kim Phung on Monday with Vancouver Lee & Ling (I sure get around eh?) Kolachy Shop today. Read all about it HERE (CLICK-A-MUNDO) A. -
You had to know this was going to happen one day. I've found a kolachy I don't really like. Difficult to believe, I know. But the Chili Dog just didn't happen for this kolachy-a-holic. There was nothing wrong with it per se ... the ingredients were fine, the dough was awesome as always. I just think a Chili Dog belongs in a bun, and should be eaten at 2am after several cleansing ales, or at 4pm after a day of skiing at Mt. Baker. I'm sticking to the Ruben. However... The Spicey Roasted Squash soup today was excellent. Very creamy with a nice spicey kick. A perfect accompaniment to the ruben and a sunny afternoon on the Yaletown Sea Wall while calling clients. Sucks to be me today A.

editor's recent musings notwithstanding, that has to be the most poetic thing I've read in here as of late, J & I will be at The Bacchus Lounge on Friday evening, and we hope to have a date on Saturday with a box of popcorn and a screening of Sideways. Anyone know of a good place for a pizza and a bottle of wine near the Fifth Ave Cinema?? I have afterall been dragging her to all these eGullet things and DOV meals ... seems an appropriate weekend for some "couple" time. A.

tsquare, Welcome to the northern side of the PNW I've been to that Handi, and they've opened recently in Burnaby ... or at least the name is "Handi" even though the Website (CLICKETY) seems to tell a different story. Good, basic fare ... delicious naan and their aloo gobi & lamb vindaloo is pretty awesome too. IMO, Indian is one of those cuisines it's difficult to do poorly, and difficult to do really well. The Himalaya (yes, they have the huge sweets counter) is a good example. For about $6 you can stuff yourself silly at the lunch buffet and you'd be hard pressed to differenciate it from more expensive buffets in the area. A.
-
That, my friend, is a great question ... a great question but not for this forum. Try the ongoing discussion HERE (CLICKETY). A.

Best samosas in the city @ The Himalaya ... Main & ???. 50 cents each and oh so tasty! Their buffet ain't bad either. A.
-
Just out of curiosity, why not Vij's/Rangoli? Is it just that you already have them on your radar? I've enjoyed a couple of really good meals at Bombay Behl on East Hastings in Burnaby. I don't know if it's Indian but I think it could be Indian. A.

Yes, Arne, and it's appropriately called The Tilting Room. ← Worthwhile to visit for a tilt? A.

Is there a bar at The Sylvia on English Bay? I've been there for brunch a couple times many many years ago, so I can't remember. Like the hotel ... hoping for a bar. A.

Truth be told: Where've you eaten lately? (Part 1)

Welcome to the club Deborah! (Note: an unofficial not-in-any-way-associated-with-eGullet kinda club ). I have similar biases, but when you have hungry sons, you get over them really quickly! My only complaint about Cactus Club is the music. I'm gonna start sounding like my dad now, but it's too frickin' loud! If they would change over to some fusion jazz (Ste Germaine des Pres or something like that) and drop it from 11 to about 7, I'd be all over the place. A. -

One word for that: EWWWWWWWWWWWW! A. -
While all this discussion about what's the best way to post about a place is all fine & dandy ... I'm missing where any of it has anything to do with The Ordinary. Seriously, this is great stuff. But venture forth into other areas of eGullet! Somebody start a discussion under General Food Topics or Policy Discussion. You can even participate in a great discussion on this already going on HERE. In fact, appreciator, you started this discussion ... we just moved it to where it's appropriate. Anybody else like crab cakes? A.

My wife & I went to Bacchus for the first time just before Christmas. Just like canucklehead we were looking for a "grown-up" place, and also like canucklehead we were considering Opus Bar. Another was the bar at Le Soleil. Do Bacchus. You won't regret it. A.

Oh GREAT!! Now all the Victoria diners & servers are going to get their knickers in a knot on the Dine Around Victoria thread! Some interesting places missing from the list of participants ... no Paprika, no L'Ecole Brasserie. How is the participation at this event? A.

Right you are my dear Ummm ... not exactly ... Not that I'm all that fussy when eating either! A.

What's the most delicious thing you've eaten today (2005)
Daddy-A replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
Yetty, this is Vancouver's SECOND eGullet couple (that we know about!). Personally, I'm comfortable with my wife as a lurker, not a member. For me ... Pho with flank steak & tendon. Spicey broth of course! Broke in another pho virgin today as well. Saddly, he didn't like the tendon as much as I A. -

Great handle Vancouver! Surprised none of us thought about taking it before Welcome to eGullet and your new addiction. Interesting time here in the Vancouver & Western Canada forum, but be sure to visit elsewhere on this board. Lots to see! Last 3 for me .... Hamilton Street Grill for my son's 11th birthday. I needed to sho both my sons that Neil really did exist, and that Gingerbread Pudding is worth saving room for I was also there for lunch on Thursday. God I need to get a life! Seoul House Royal with peppyre, Ling & Mooshmouse for lunch. My first Korean BBQ (really!) and definitely not my last. Sorry about playing with the call button on the table ladies ... it just looked so cool. The Elysian Room after the BBQ for a cappuccino. hopkin even brought us a different style cappuccino (name was something in Spanish ... help?). He's adding it to the menu. Very serious coffee ... fantastic. A.
