  1. A quick search over in Pastry & Baking reveals this: CLICK Happy reading! A.
  2. And it worked. Yer creapin' me out Pan ... AAAACK! We trick the dogs into taking their flea medecine by hiding it in pepperoni. Unfortunatlely Ringo can separate the pill out quite easily now. I think he's looking for more pepperoni ... Myself? I ate everything as a kid so I didn't need to be tricked. A.
  3. The name of the gentleman who selected the wines for the evening is Albert Givton. ← A little bit more from his Web Page: CLICK A.
  4. Chris did say "she", didn't he? You gonna take one for the team and go under the knife to qualify?! Of course, you'll have to shave your legs too... ← Last I checked, Chris wasn't the forum host 'round here ... [wanders off into the sunset] Was talking with J about this dinner ... we could both thing of 4 $250 meals for 2 we'd rather do thatn this. I guess it would be more attractive if Trotter actually meant something to me. So, a question ... Forgetting the $1000 price tag for a second, how many here see Trotter as a big draw for this dinner? A.
  5. [Looks around, wondering how HE got passed over for this assignment ...] $20 US Chris? That was worth something once. I have to admit, I've been looking at my kids' university fund. They're never going to amount to much anyway. A.
  6. It should be noted that eGullet manager, and frequent Vancouver visitor, Andy Lynes wrote that list. HERE is the post where he fesses up. Tojo's also received top honours from a different writer. Cheers to all a West & Tojo's! A.
  7. Hell KT, I think people driving around in Hummers with gas at $1.20/litre obscene. Mmmmmm .... cake. A.
  8. I want to know where this $1500 package for airfare/accomodations/dinner at El Bulli exists. Maybe if Vancouver Lee rented a Cesna and flew us himself. Given the stature of the event and the wines that are likely to be served, $1000 sounds about right to me. Still WAY out of my league, but as IrishGirl said, people will pay. Behave you! A.
  9. I can't be the only one who had to Google SALSIFY A.
  10. Inquiring minds want to know ... how many Karole? The Subaru could fit about 9 if we didn't have luggage. Last 3 for me? HSG for Rockin' Ronnie's send-off bash, Stormin' Norman's for Burger club (same day), and Kolachy Shop for lunch on Monday (Thai Chicken Soup ... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ) A.
  11. [host] Thanks kurtis for making that point for me. This discussion is moving into heresay and cannot continue in that direction. Also, let's keep the discussion focussed on the deal at Morton's. Nobody was flogging, just sharing information. Discussion of Vancouver/Western Canada steak houses can continue HERE. Thanks, A. [/host]
  12. Doing anything for Halloween? Nu's just announced their Masquerade Party. Details on the eGullet Calendar or on the Nu Web Site. A. [host] Please, no pre-event discussion in forum. Use the PM system. However ... pictures from those who attend would be appreciated! [/host]
  13. Dear Lord woman! THAT POST was made at the end of August. What a memory! Canucklehead hadn't been either A.
  14. Before class last night, I walked by a tiny little place called Wink Cafe .. its just off Main on 8th Ave (west side of Main, north side of 8th). Looked kinda interesting ... decor is very cool. Anyone been, or am I destined to take one for the team? A.
  15. Thanks for identifying yourself jahvay ... and welcome to eGullet! There's a customer satidfaction survey out there somewhere that shows that customers who had something go wrong with their experience, but had that something corrected quickly and to their satisfaction actually show greater overall satisfaction than customers who's experience was flawless. Good point. Talk to your server ... they won't bite. A.
  16. Welcome to eGullet Colin! Is marsh mallow root something that can be sourced locally? A.
  17. A new-ish member, and he's already pimpin' his eGullet status! Great report ... and since I saw it for myself, I can vouch for thoughtbox's appetite. I can't wait to get him and Ling at the same table! A.
  18. [host] Back on track folks ... we're not here to discuss eGullet reviewers. Rather, those who review professionally. Thanks A. [/host]
  19. Provolone? Cheeses on the pizza were fontina and cambozola. Butter in the pastry. Sugar, no vinegar. Egg in the ice water? I assume you mean the pastry .. if so, then no egg. Definitely egg in the lemon curd. The butter was cut in using our own two hands! Really fun class last night. I was surprised at how confident I felt cooking the chicken in a non-stick pan! Wasn't worried about sticking at all. And the sauce (wine to deglaze, chicken stock & butter) was so simple but so good! Linguini next week! And I heard rumour of hangar steak if Chef Tony can possibly find a source. Hmmm ... wonder where he could find that ... A. editted to add: Still haven't eaten my lemon tart. Brought it home for J and with upcoming dinner commitments it looks like it'll be Wednesday before I gut a taste
  20. Never were truer words spoken. A.
  21. Well, there's always my smoker ... Try THIS thread for more discussion of succulent lamb. A.
  22. Oh, yes... we're still letting our 9 year old think that fried calamari rings are just different French fries! ← I told me ex-BIL that they were bacon! Another couple of stories from my fish-monger days ... We used to get sturgeon from time to time and put a whole sturgeon, sans head, up front for "display." When asked what it was we would tell unsuspecting tourists (and naiive locals) that it was in fact a narwhal. When asked where the long tusk was, we'd point to an old broomstick at the back of the shop. Occaisionaly we'd get early spawning salmon with their "hooked" noses. If asked what the hooked nose was for (it really has no "use" AFAIK) we'd reply it was for the salmon to hook over branches in the river so it could rest during its long trip up stream to spawn. Somewhere in Houston, there's a family that video-taped me telling this "fascinating" story! A.
  23. DON'T get me started! I'm trying really hard not to push my coffee morality on others. If you're happy, then so am I. I feel like this is the last day of vacation ... your blog has been fantastic! Thanks so much for putting in such a huge effort to show us your part of the world. A.
  24. [host] Time to nip the "discussion of the discussion" in the bud. This thread is for discussing the review of Diva by Ms. Gill. Any other discussions need to take place elsewhere. Thanks! I also want to take a quick moment to thank everyone involved in this thread for keeping the debate civil. Not only does it make my job easier (which is what it's all about, right? ) it makes the topic much more enjoyable to read. A. [/host]
  25. Just waking up from a meat-induced coma ... Started off Sunday with a porcine-overdose at Rockin' Ronnie's event at the HSG, only to remember our Burger-Club commitment at Stormin' Norman's. (I just now noticed the similarity between the two names ) I'm going to have to return when I'm not so full to really enjoy the offerings at Stormin's. But the Mixed Meat burger I shared with J (Yes, SHARED!) was really good from a meat POV. I appreciate the use of game meats, especially in light of the number of medicore burger joints that are out there. The condiment bar was unlike any other I've seen ... although the corn relish was nowhere near as good as Big Al's (Trout Lake market). Minor point, but I had to pick something! Small room, but cozy, not crowded. Live music from "Sylvain" last night which was appreciated. Only one server who totally worked her ass off ... excellent service. Norman kept doing his own quality checks as well which I appreciate. The man really believes in what he's doing. Good meeting all the new eGullet die hards. Thoughbox is destined to become a serious threat to Ling's eating crown, mark my words! A.
