  1. Hey, what's the use of Pti bothering? I think I found your place, several posts above. ← I would have to see a picture of the interior... I only found a picture of the exterior of Pop'hot, and I didn't recognize it, BUT, to be honest, I went to this restaurant at night, so I don't really remember the exterior... The place I went seemed a bit bigger though, but who knows... I remember the street was sort of twisty and a decent walk from the closest metro... Let me keep searching for more pictures of Pop'hot....
  2. No, none of those ring a bell and I looked up all of them and the ones that had pictures were not it... Hmmm, I have a new mission in life now! I will find that damn guidebook and hopefully track down the restaurant...
  3. To answer your question, I was there in April of 2006. Just over 1 year ago... Don't know what year the guidebook was from, I am going to do my best to locate it today...
  4. It would be helpful to me (and I suspect others) if you could give some geographical/landmark references, for instance, where did you go afterwards, what metro stop? as well as any other memories - think it's still open because it was founded a million years ago, famous for some other dish, was next to another place you recall, etc?I love questions like this, but so far no IBM punch card has fallen into view. ← OK, no luck so far remembering where it was... But I'm pretty sure I found out about it from a guidebook, like Frommer's or something... I am searching for those 2 guidebooks... Anyway, here are two pictures... One is of the dish, the other is of me preparing to eat the dish (you can see the restaurant and bar in the background)... Any help figuring out what place this is will be much appreciated! Second Picture - Me and my Steak
  5. I can absolutely relate... I spent many summers growing up in Paris... I would eat at the corner bistro (still there!) once a week... (But in hindsight, it's not that great, but nostalgic)... I also fell in love with Poulet Grille that I would buy from the boucherie... And of course, baguette avec jambon from the patisserie... Those 3 "foods" are still my favorites to this day!!! I think I'd rate them as such: First - Steak Frites Second - Baguette avec jambon de paris Third - Poulet Grille... Man, I miss Paris! I envy those of you living there now... Anyway, I digress... I will post pictures of the "mystery" steak frites along with some location information tonight...
  6. I ate at a restaurant in Paris once... I cannot even remember the Arrondisment, but it was recommended as an "excellent" steak frites place... Can someone help me locate it? Here's what I remember: 1) The steak frites was "for 2 people" and was served on a sort of iron skillet with the fries all around and under the steak 2) The steak was large slices, and pretty fatty 3) The fries were closer to steak cut (thick) fries than your typical french frites 4) The place had brick walls and was sort of a hole in the wall... 5) I believe there was a bar directly to the left when you walked in... I have a picture of the steak I believe, I'll have to see if I can dig it up and post it if no one can identify the restaurant based on my above descriptions... BTW, kudos to the OP... This is a great thread and I cannot wait to try some of these restaurants mentioned when I hit Paris this fall...
  7. BackwardsHat, just for the record - Grand Véfour has managed to maintain its three stars this year despite all rumours. In the case of Taillevent of course, the rumours were true. It is now the best two star restaurant of Paris :-) ← Ah, I stand corrected! Personally, I think if either one should have been demoted it should have been grand vefour... But I dunno, when you get to that level of restaurant, it's really splitting hairs... Hmmmm, all this talk of Taillevent makes me want to go back when I'm there this spring or maybe fall! lol... It's been a while since I had that massive pressed duck dish...
  8. Has anyone here ever dined in one of the kitchen tables in the Little Inn at Washington? I am scheduled to go there in a few months and was wondering what to expect. A friend sent me a video clip of some food show showing people dressed like priests with incense and this whole ceremony when you enter the kitchen for dinner. Just wondering if all that is the "norm".
  9. 1 week in advance should do you just fine... maybe even just a few days, or same day if you are lucky...
  10. Neither of them are at the top of my list for the food, but they are impressive as part of French history and the old-school 3-star establishments (even though they've both been demoted to "lowly" two-stars this year) Grand Vefour is of course where Napoleon ate and is ornate as hell... Just sitting in there is an experience... Taillevent is one of those places you really should experience... Upon entering, you are greeted by about 2-3 dozen different people with "bonjour messieur"... It's really quite fatiguing by the time you get to your table Again, the food at both of these places is only average for a Michelin restaurant... But it's worth the experience if you have already done a 3-star with amazing food (like savoy or whatever)
  11. Overall I prefer Guy Savoy... In fact, during my tour of 3-star Paris restaurants, Guy Savoy was my favorite overall... However, I will say, that if you are doing the LUNCH tasting menu, Gagnaire has the best lunch tasting menu of the two... I don't know if he is still around the restaurant, but when I did the lunch menu there 2 years ago, he came out and chatted with me during my dessert course and then we hung out by the bar after lunch was over for a bit... He's definitely a man obsessed with what people think of his food... Man, I love the French... Oh, Astrance is great... I've been there a ton of times, the staff are young and uber-professional... Such a great experience... I am thrilled they got their 3rd star so fast!
  12. Yes, I was thinking of Sakai's place, why not go there for french-japan cooking? Since Sakai is the man, I assumed that his restaurant would be amazing...
  13. Ah, VERY nice, this is basically what I was looking for... Thanks girl!
  14. Excellent!! Thanks for all the suggestions, I'm going to send this list to my friend and we'll be sure to check some of these places out...
  15. Yes, my buddy that I will be doing most of the dinners with is pretty well connected, I guess I can just let him take care of everything...
  16. I will be in Tokyo for 2 weeks in early October on vacation. I want to visit at least 3-4 top restaurants. Is La Rochelle a good place to go? I can also travel to other places in Japan (I'm going to Ito for 2 days for sure). I want to get some good sushi, and overall good Japanese food. Budget is unlimited, so anything is fine. Thanks!

I second Cpalms... It's good stuff, but you go for the place and the people, not just the food. If your expecting something special from just the food, you will be sadly disappointed. I saw a couple sitting in the corner eating once (One of the few 2-person tables, the one by the door), and they looked miserable... You really need to go with a big group and know some people to have fun there, since almost everyone there knows someone else there...
  18. Congrats, you'll always remember your first time at Ray's with fondness... ;-) I should be there satruday as well, albeit a bit earlier...
  19. I'm going this week, I'll let you know what I think...
  20. "Shirts tucked in"??? How is this being "american"??? Anyone who goes to Taillevent (or similar) with their shirt untucked is a slob, regardless of nationality... I don't care how "hip" or "stylish" you think you are...
  21. I wouldn't go to Taillevent, unless for the posterity of saying you went... The food is not that great, easily surpassed by Guy Savoy, Astrance, or Pierre Gagnaire... But hey, this is not a discussion on where to go, it's on what to wear to Taillevent... So... I say for men, wear a nice suit, and for women, wear a nice dress... Forget the tux, I've been to a bunch of 3-star michelin Paris places and never saw a single person wearing one... I think you'll only find it on opera nights like a previous poster suggested... Enjoy the meal!
  22. sara: How was the quality of the yellowtail and toro? donrocks: Did you order any nigiri? How was the quality of the fish?
  23. I've never seen his assistant... When I went just a month or so ago it was just him alone and one woman as the server for the entire place... I'm thinking it's a new thing since they have gotten very busy as of late...
  24. Never heard of Yakomoto... I believe you are referring to Kotobuki (formerly Ivy) right above Makoto, on McArthur Blvd. correct? So, are you going to share with us what days are the delivery dates? (By the way, I don't think his Uni was that great any time I've gone there... But the yellowtail was the fattiest and tastiest I've ever had, the first time I went there... Never had anything like it since...)
  25. ditto... Only thing lacking is the decor, and even that is arguable as some would say it's part of the charm (a la Rao's and others...) Hmmm, it's been while, maybe I'll hit ray's this week... I'm getting hungry and it's 8:55AM ;-)
