  1. Dr. Pepper and Peppermint Schnapps. Called a "Dr. Peppermint" by my drunken companion. Not bad back then (I was 18), but now... Hey, I love gin and juice. But my version is bougie...fresh squeezed organic grapefruit juice and Bombay Sapphire. My white trash, isn't too bad combo: cheap rum and Diet vanilla Coke My sister's contribution: Cheerwine and Zima.
  2. The Beacon Beefsteak. No, that's even more excessive because there's so much alcohol involved. But the difference is that it's not fried food -- you can wake up the next morning after the Beefsteak and actually get something accomplished. Fish Camp is far more aggressive from a systemic viewpoint. It really wouldn't take that much longer to head up Lexington way, would it? Hour and a half maybe. Or is it more like 2? Anyway, I feel sorry for you---don't they put mustard or something ungodly in the 'cue down there? You know, there is a little Cambodian grocery in Lexington if that entices you (I live 2 hours away in Blah-leigh and even the promise of fresh galangal and fresh turmeric root is not enough to entice me to go back to my hometown). After hearing my Gastonia cousin call a fried fish restaurant fish camp, we've been saying it ever since, whether it's a true fish camp or not. It's a very satisfying phrase to say. Doh! Edited to say that I quoted the wrong quote.
  3. Damn good and cheap works for me. I guess by authentic I do sorta just mean damn good and cheap, anyway. Consider it on my short list edited to add I'm going to also add the Banh Mi at Saigon Sandwich to the list too. There's a place here that does pretty decent ones for next to nothing, and while I'm sure they're not the best out there, they're still tasty, so I'm sure Saigon Sandwich will be a fave.
  4. Cool. 15 minutes is next to nothing in my world...everything here sprawls so much and good places to eat are so few and far between that it's not at all uncommon to to have to drive 15 minutes for good eats. We won't have a car (we may rent one for a day), but Bart will be fine. Han, DH knows the San Jose area a little, and no English isn't too scary for me at all...as long as there are pictures for me to point at like in Japan!
  5. How far is Oakland from city centre? I have no probs w/travelling a little for my lunch (especially if public transport will get me there), but DH can be a hard sell.
  6. I know this topic has at least been touched on before, but I'm new to the forum and not-yet-so-good at using the search function, for which I apolgize. The Dh and I are visiting SF at the end of April, and need recs for good, cheap eats, especially Vietnamese. I mean the real stuff, no fusion (well, I guess French Colonial influence would be ok...there's nothin' like a Vietnamese sub). I don't care about ambience or friendly service, I just want a place that's good and cheap, where they won't blink an eyelash if I ask for something extra spicy, and will actually deliver the goods. We currently live in the Triangle (NC), which is woefully devoid of any decent SE Asian food, so we try to get our fill when we're out of town. Also, any Thai recs would be appreciated (same criteria as for Vietnamese). TIA, Jen (not Jenn)
  7. Is there any good (real) Thai or Vietnamese in the Triangle? Sawasadee is terrible and horribly overpriced. Actually, I've noticed that about all of the Thai and Vietnamese restaurants around here. As it is, DH and I drive to DC or Greensboro when we want either. Dalat has good subs, but the restaurnant itself is not good (like Americanized Chinese-ed Vietnamese). I'm tired of going out for SE Asian in the Triangle to consistantly find that I could have done better at home. We live in Raleigh, but I don't mind driving to CH or Durham (obviously, since we've been driving to DC). Oh, I second the request for the name of a good Indian place.
  8. So is Tin's still good after the change in ownership? Is it worth the trip to Oakland?
