Hi there, I heard a rumour that there has been for some time now a winemaker in Burgundy who was/is a Canadian citizen. The rumourville stated that they were from Quebec. Can anyone out there confirm this for me and shed any more details? thanks!

Argh! The one time I have no TV. Could someone out there post about what Vikram said last night? Cheers!

I fully agree but there are reasons on why she wants to age it. My other half is a winemaker and one of the reasons he like Ch Margaux and Ch Palmer is that he has been fortunate enough to try aged bottles (>20yrs old) of these wine. However, he has told my mother in casual conversation that he has never been able to try these great wines young and would be curious to taste what these wines are like in their youth that enables them to age into such beautiful old wines when other wines that he has tried barely make it to 10 yrs old before tasting tired. I think that it was encredibly generous for my mother to buy him this bottle and if she wants to open it for him in a teaching way with this blind tasting then one can hope it will make my other half a better winemaker for it and we all benefit. Hope that adds some clarification on why she wants to open it.

Hello! My mother splurged and got a gift for my other half -a 2002 Chateau Margaux (this along with Ch Palmer are his favorites) but her condition for buying it is that it is to be opened blind (in the next month or so and no I can't convince her to age it) beside another wine that would make an interesting comparison with price being less than $70. It would be preferable to get something of a similar makeup and nonfrench. I've been looking at some selections from Chile or S.Africa but am open to any country. Can anyone suggest a wine that would be interesting for this tasting? Cheers.

Vancouver, BC, and Western Canada Burger Club

I just got back from a burger dinner at the Cactus Club at Broadway and Ash and I'm pretty sure the regular burgers on the menu are nothing 'turbo' like. I ordered the jd bbq burger and was very disappointed. The patty was less than 1cm thick and was cooked past well done. It was slathered so much tangy smokey bbq sauce that numbed your tongue that there was no taste of beef at all. The bun was ok. White seedless and lightly toasted. Other toppings were pickle, cut lettuce, tomato and mayo. The fries were the thin style nicely salted and mine came hot. I can't say I would be recommending the CC burgers as a must-try burger. Cheers! -
Me too! One of my favorite malaysian digs ← Ok I need some help on this one. I've been the banana leaf on multiple occassions now and I always leave lukewarm about the quality. The food is good but to me it hasn't lived up to the hype. Perhaps I'm ordering the wrong thing....what is that you love? I'm always willing to try again. Cheers.

I also would like to see a revival in this discussion. I'm trying to find a portugese place for a couple reasons. The first is so that I can learn about the cuisine so am looking for the more authentic like places. However, I will be dining with others who are mostly looking to have a nice night out without spending the price that Chiado charges. Right now Adega seems to be the most interesting looking to me but would love to hear more opinions.

Just wondering if anyone has eaten at Piri Piri recently and if they are still recommended? (BTW do they have nice wine glasses??) Cheers

My understanding is that there is butter made in Quebec (and they could always import French butter no?) with a higher % so really if they wanted to make top notch croissants it is possible isn't it?

I need to find the best cinnamon I can get my hands on for both cooking and a gift purpose. My mother often talks about cinnamon her mother used to use that when you open the can the whole house smelled of cinnamon and she hasn't been able to find anything that good of quality in years. Can anyone recommend a place to get great cinnamon? -
Hoping to get a few more details about Allen's. Could someone give me address/contact information for Allans? Ground steak, hand formed? Love to hear more details!

Thanks for the feedback. I want the maps because I also want to frame and hang them on the wall. Cheers!

You know the long maps of the cote de nuits/beaune that have the vineyards outlined and named and the different levels of premier cru and grand cru in seperate colours? Well I can't seem to find them and would like to purchase them preferably online. Any suggestions? cheers

Who is making the best pain au chocolate these days? I'm not a great fan of the ones with sugar sprinkled on the top but any suggestions are welcome. Cheers!

Thanks for the reply! For a frame of reference when you were in Vancouver did you eat a Vij's?

Hi! I'll be in Toronto for 4-5 days and would like to try some places to eat that really show off Toronto and how it is different from Vancouver in the dining scene. So I'm not looking for the highest priced restaurants but rather the unique places that make food that can not be found in Vancouver. I'm sure there are some of you out there that know Vancouver's dining scene well and can send some recommendations. Thanks so much!

Vancouver, BC, and Western Canada Burger Club

Hi all! I just got back into Vancouver after being in Oregon for a few months and had my fingers crossed there might be a burger club meeting in December (I'm gone again in Jan...) so if there is a meeting I'm for sure into trying to make it! If I get a vote Mon/Tue's are best for me! Cheers! -
Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm going to recommend either C or maybe Japanese and see what gets picked. Oysters also would be great except I want to partake in the fun myself and have this annoying allergy to such yummy creatures.

Just wanted to chime in with another voice in the 'love Vijs' category. I travel a lot and one of the things I'm constantly looking for is very good indian restaurants. I remember the first time I went to Vij's and in talking to Vikram it was very clear he wasn't aiming for something that is textbook authentic but rather something original. If for no other reason I think Vijs is outstanding for this point. When you eat Indian often (and lets be clear we are talking restaurants here not at home) just the sight of another uninspired, tried and true, safe menu is a let down regardless of how well those dishes are done. I will not say that Vijs is perfect or for everyone and I hope they continue to do original and different dishes. So if you are looking for something authentic perhaps Vijs may not be for you the same way many people do not like the fusion of asian and french food. For my personal tastes I will choose Vijs when I'm looking for inspiration and elsewhere when I want something more traditional.

Hi everyone! I have a tough customer coming to town to please. I'm looking for a restaurant who you think makes the best food without a lot of intervention. For example, those gorgeous yummy sauces on the plates at Parkside would make him crazy. Price is not an issue. Ideas? Cheers!

I was wondering if anyone has been lucky enough to travel to chile lately and how the Pinot Noirs are tasting? We get the grand total of 1 (cono sur) where I am so really don't get to see what they are like. Cheers!

For the Canadians out there what wines do you search out and buy in the USA that you can't get back home? I'm based in Vancouver and have heard the selection and prices are better in the USA. What sort of things do you search out? Cheers!

Which one? They have a few different 'levels'.

I was inspired by the topic on The Farm House Natural Cheeses in Agassiz as a great place to stop off on the way to the interior. I was wondering if there were other places in BC that you make sure you stop at on the way to your chosen destination. For example, I know some people make a stop at coombes on the way to tofino. How about on route to whistler, seattle or other driving destinations where you make a point of taking a pit stop. Cheers!
