  1. Update on the new Red Dog Cafe...The space looks pretty much ready to go, and a sign outside announces a March 2004 opening. Yesterday there was a troop of folks inside with the chef in what seemed to be a tasting/tour. With the red garage door entrance and outdoor seating, this place is sure to be popular in the neighborhood. I hope it will be a nice alternative to Parkway Deli!
  2. Marcela's does have excellent mozzarella, made fresh daily, and not stored in the fridge so it keeps that creamy goodness till you get it home! Can't wait for the first good tomatoes to come out...
  3. From the EGullet user agreement: Subject Matter and Decorum Nations where free expression is codified in law delimit free expression by providing penalties for defamation; outlawing hate speech, obscenity, fighting words, and incitement; protecting intellectual property via the copyright, trademark, and patent laws; upholding contractual obligations; and regulating the time, place, and manner of public expression. We respect all those restrictions, and also limit expression on eGullet by two additional criteria: subject matter (we are a food site) and decorum (just as a legislature or other body needs to have rules of conduct so as to allow for a meaningful exchange of ideas). We do not allow mean-spirited insults or other disruptive posts. We will remove harassing or disruptive messages that bear no substantive connection to topics germane to these message boards, and users who engage in persistent patterns of harassment or disruption will be removed from the site, have their posts deleted, or have their conduct otherwise curtailed, at eGullet's discretion. While we do not consider it our job to protect all our users' sensibilities, we forbid gratuitous nastiness and other uncivil conduct. The goals of free expression are to foster, not suppress, the free exchange of ideas. Constructive criticism is always the best way to handle a disagreement and we suggest the best way to deal with rude or frivolous messages is to ignore them. If you feel you've been attacked, please don't respond by escalating. This makes it nearly impossible for us to do anything about the original attack, and we consider all parties to any blowup to be equally culpable regardless of who started it. The only appropriate response to a perceived insult or attack is to report the post to a moderator and to wait for official action. Regardless of what the official decision is, you absolutely may not engage in personal attacks. Instead, respond by refutation. Keep your personal issues off the boards. If you are a bystander, you should remain a bystander and report the post. If it's essential for you to discuss a personal issue, please do it on the private messenger circuit, but understand that we expect civility there as well and that no one has an obligation to respond to private messages.
  4. I'm new to Arlington, with my office in Ballston....Where is El Charrito? I have seen it mentioned a couple of times on the board and would love to know where to find it! This former Austinite would love to find some good tacos! Thanks!
  5. Stopped by Adega last night, just before the end of happy hour (8 PM) for $2 wine by the glass and a few appetizers (excellent bruchetta & grilled flatbread with toppings). The service was, as usual, very good, but be prepared for wine in a plastic wine glass. Our group stayed on the sandwich side, ordering the smoked salmon club, the napa burger, the steak and cheese sandwhich, and a bowl of clam chowder in the bread bowl (no atkins here!). All seemed to like their dishes, and we eyed the eggplant fries at another table. The steak and cheese, we were informed by the PA native, was not like in Philly, but it was very good. Overall this is a nice addition to the neighborhood. The wine prices are higher than at other places, like Rodmans, but the selection is often unique and you can't beat the by-the-glass price. Very worth a return visit.
  6. I would agree with the above comments about the quality of food at the Colorado Kitchen. The meal I had there was excellent, and with the restaurant mostly empty on a cold Saturday night I have to say that the service was very good, though the servers seemed monkish in their quietness (fear of Chef?). Go for the cauliflower appetizer - a revelation on cauliflower for me. The brunch is at the top of my to-do list. I did find the atmosphere somewhat stern, though, and not quite relaxing with all the rules and caveats. The individuality of the place won me over and I can't wait to go back.
