SEA: Last-minute lunch at Tutta Bella
tighe replied to a topic in Pacific Northwest & Alaska: Dining
I made a surprise (late) guest appearance....thought the pizza was very good. It reminded me a lot of the pizza at my local Italian joint, Filiberto's in Burien. The crust was almost exactly the same. Tutta Bella offers more interesting toppings however. I had the 'Campagnia' with chicken sausage, garlic, kalamatas, chile flakes and fresh basil. -
No market in White Center this year? I wish Renton would go back to being on Saturdays too...

Damn it! I knew I should have graded those quizzes last night!.... -
Sorry if I'm being obtuse, but....did you like them, or not so much?
-
It's the one that used to be ARO Space, but I don't know what the name is these days.

On the owner's recommendation, I had the pesto mayonnaise, which was good. There are several others that I'd like to try as well. Frites and drinks is all they serve. I heard the owner talking to another customer about how they had wanted to serve Belgian beers as well, but the club didn't want competition for their bar sales (boo hiss!).

I went today...they are open from 12:30 PM to 2:30 AM, Tuesday through Saturday. The late hour is due to the fact they're catering to patrons of the club that they're attached to. Excellent business plan, given that these fries may be the perfect late night munchy food. I thought the fries were excellent. It reminded me that thick-cut fries can actually be worthwhile to eat. The vast majority aren't for me. These actuall tasted like fresh potatoes. I ordered the 'medium' size, which was too much for me to finish, the large must be stupefying. I'll be back, probably too often for my own good....

My question is, "when is it open?", period. I tried to go by today at lunch and it was shut tight. Also no indication of days/times when it's open. I find it all a little annoying, but not sufficiently so to keep me from trying again. Is it so tough to tape up a sheet of paper with your hours?...

I've pressed my nose against the window at this plase on my way to various lunch places, but it's always been closed. I'm glad its good, although it way too close to the office. I have such fond memories of Belgian fries from the year I lived in Luxembourg.

If you like the whole steak house thing, then The Met is probably a good choice. I think the quality of meat is comparable to the other high-end places in town.

We had a pretty good throw-down on seafood restaurants recently. Link here. One place not mentioned on that thread that is great for fish is Matt's in the Market. Salumi....I had dinner once at Babbo and it didn't hold a candle to the food I've had at Salumi...really...go... Two newish places in town that I would recommned (both have been discussed extensively here if you do a quick search) are Union (1st & Union Downtown) and Lark (12th Ave E on Captiol Hill).
-
I would think Union would be a good place to go solo. Great bar area and you could choose either a table or the bar itself.

I like the halibut & chips at Pyramid, more the the halibut than the chips, but that's my prejudice against steak fries.

The Warwick Hotel has a room on the top floor with a nice view of Seattle Center and Lake Union that I really like. It's fairly small, so it wouldn't feel oversized for 25. The food is catered by Brasserie Margaux. I don't know what the pricing is like.

I tried sawagani for the first time at Mashiko the other night. I didn't dislike them, but I can't say I'd go out of my way to have them again either. More of a food experience I guess. The crabs were actually larger than I thought they'd be and didn't seem particularly "soft shelled", very crunchy. Also had a laurel and Joe sighting.....

Durum Semolina flour in Seattle
tighe replied to a topic in Pacific Northwest & Alaska: Cooking & Baking
See what I mean? I don't even know if the place still exists, much less whether or not they carry semolina flour. Too bad though, they must have been a victim of all the construction in that area. -

I know they at least used to have it at Sunshine Produce at 18th & Madison, but I haven't been there for a few years. -
Source for Stellar Bay oysters?
tighe replied to a topic in Pacific Northwest & Alaska: Cooking & Baking
Abra, I think you should get a gold star. $6.99 seems very reasonable.... -
You ARE kidding? I hope you said something like, "I was actually planning to show it to friends who I thought would be interested in visiting the restaurant, but now I guess I won't bother." I find this particularly amazing since my experience over the past few years is that restaurants handle that request with a lot more grace than they used to. When we were in Paris, on place had the chef sign the menu without our even asking for it...

Not the same. Penn Cove is on Whidbey Island and Stellar Bay is on Cortes Island in B.C. They were really excellent when I had them at Union, topped with paddlefish caviar. I'd love to know where to find them as well. -
When I was looking for Semiahmoo dining alternatives, I ran across Bellingham's Best Places. Didn't make it to any of them, but I thought The Calumet sounded promising and I believe their chef was featured one of the Channel 9 cooking marathon shows a couple years ago.

We don't take kindly, to those who don't take kindly..... Might want to keep an eye on the rear-view mirror for a pickup truck filled with shotgun toting locals next time you cross the city line headed south Cam....

Ahhh yes, another Rinconsito convert..... Next time you feel like an expedition, consider trying Muy Macho in South Park. It goes back and forth between them and Rinconsito for my favorite tacos.
