  1. We are not picky at all. Infact we are a bunch of Japanese Americans, well with the exception of my dad who is basically white and is an only child.. wow TMI there, sorry. We usually do the usual chinese or japanese. We are open to anything. Where is a good place with a view in San mateo or Oakland?
  2. Where is a good "reasonably" priced restaurant to house btwn 20-30 relatives for a 75th birthday? Our family usually either goes to San Mateo, Castro Valley or Oakland. We're at a loss where to try next. My dad is not picky where he eats and we want to do something special for him. thanks in advance Kathryn
  3. One restaurant we go to for "bring back to torment central" dinner or lunch is Phmon Penh House 8th/Webster. Ive never been to the other one, but will certainly try it. the pho-84 is a frequent place we dine. Im not sure why people dislike Le Cheval so much. I think its good as long as I don't eat it but once or twice a month. I wish the menu would change, but the cube steak w/green beans and coconut milk chicken/tofu are my favorites. Personally I like Taqueria San Jose better than El Faralito. I believe its right down the street. My favorite taco truck is the one next to the Guadalajara restaurant by the Bart station. Chinese - again, King Wah, their deep fried rock cod is really good. Their chicken wonton soup is a meal in itself. Also the Mon Yee wonton dish and guy gun yee ( i have no idea how to spell it) is really really good soup. Thanks again for all the tips and places to try. Now as far as the get together... wasn't there just a potluck that seemed to be a success????????? Something about a store bought cheese cake and some mango chutney?
  4. Thanks everyone! I can't wait to try these new restaurants. Just to clarify, I meant forgo the obvious Chez Panisse cuz its a given, not for any other reason! I guess the berkeley area tops the lists. Hope everyone has a great weekend! Kath
  5. Oh yeah, I forgot about that one. We did go there. You know I just returned from a 2 week trip in Germany and ate like queens! Also I spent 7 years living over there (army brat). Maybe that's why I forgot about it. I've taken my dad there a couple of times. Thanks for responding
  6. Im new here so if this has been discussed recently forgive me. I am wondering which restaurants are your favorite in the East Bay. I live in Alameda and found only a few decent places to eat. I would like to forgo the obvious Chez Pannise. I would like to know the choice for fine dining, mid-price, cheap eats and the all important take out joint. I work nights in Oakland (lake merritt bart station) and bring back chinese atleast 3 to 4 times a week. Our favorite is King Wah, but they do use alot of oil. Here's my list: Fine dining - ha ha I don't really know of any since I am a mid-price sort of gal Mid Price - well not knowing what is mid-price to me my favs are Sushi House (southshore mall alameda) Angle Fish (Bay Farm Island) Walnut Creek Yacht Club (there's a bart connection there) Cheap Eats: Kobe ya (alameda) Pasta Primavera (walnut creek) Pasta Pomodoro (college ave) Crepe Vine (next door) Take out: King Wah & Yung Kee 4 Caminos (near fruitvale bart) Taqueria Los Pericos (san leandro) Zachary's Pizza Im hoping y'all can help me expand my tastes. Thank you in advance!
