  1. "it is hard to take your complaints seriously without more detail. "

I would be more than happy to provide more details: from the moment that we were finally seated (mind you, this was my second visit there) the service was so slow, to the point that one of my friends had to go in search of our waiter to get refills on water and then to finally get the check.

I don't mind the fact that they would not seat us even though one of our party of three was still parking her car. But the difference here was my friend and I WERE THE ONLY ONES IN THE JOINT! There was a empty house so there was ample seats available. The other problem was the hostesses treatment of the whole failure to seat us issue. If she had only been nice, and explained the situation calmly or used some common sense and provided us with an exception to their rule being that the house was empty and just seated us.

I would be pleased to find out that the service that night was merely a fluke and that the place is the model of all that is customer service. However, this is my PERSONAL experience at the place. Take it for what it is worth, listen to it or don't. I could really care less.

But I have to say, I am not the only person that has had crap service here. ASk JennyUptown.

  2. I am always in wonder why this board always comes to a quick defense of Palena's bad service.  It has happened to me twice there and they have now lost a customer because of it.  I am glad to see that I am not the only one.

Back room or cafe? Did you speak with someone about the poor service? It is hard for a restaurant to know what it has to correct if you don't speak up. What was so bad that you would not want to return?

    1.Cafe.

2.Told the manager about the bad, slow service. I have eaten at many "fine dining establishments" here in DC and across the country. I know how to speak up when things are not the way that they should be, especially when I am paying a premium for the services.

3.My friends and I (who are all about 30 or so) were treated like we were sitting at the kids table at Thanksgiving. Not only did we order cocktails from the bar, but we also bought an expensive bottle of wine. it was not like we were not spending a bunch of money in the joint. My experience there was filled with bad service, pretense, and thoughtless service.

  4. Roger Troutman and I have a reservation tonight at 7. If you all are still there come over and say hi to us. (I would be the hot red-head, he would be the hot man with the goatee)

We are really excited to have our pay day dinner at Rays tonight. I have been dreaming of that calamari and those freaking eggs. And oh yeah, the STEAKS.

    Full report tomorrow.

  5. I always see the mortors and pestles at Dean and Deluca and W.Sonoma and I have wanted to buy one just for the purpose of making drinks like those described above.

Check your local Asian grocery. I just got a rockin' (literally - it is made from stone) big mortar and pestle for $10 marked down from $14 (the stotre is going out of business but even at $14 it would be a bargain). Way more functional than the ones I've seen in cooking stores and much cheaper.

Thanks! I will definitely look around. I really want to make some mojitos but I need the tools for the job.

  6. Blueberry Smash

1 1/2 ounces of Bacardi Limón rum

1/4 cup of blueberries (or a small handful, which is roughly a quarter cup....)

    8 mint leaves

A good squeeze of fresh lemon juice

    1 tablespoon sugar

    soda water

In the bottom of an Old Fashioned glass, place sugar, blueberries and mint; muddle. Add a scoop of cracked/crushed ice. Pour the rum over the ice and top with soda. Garnish with a sliced swizzle stick of fresh sugar cane and mint.

    Yum. Cheers!

This sounds great! I think I am going to try this on Friday at a birthday party I am hosting.

Tell me: Should I buy some special tools for the muddling? Or can I just use a masher that I already have at home?

  7. Where's everyones sense of humor gone today? It's silly and funny, only offensive if you want to make it that way, but overall harmless. Are we going to have to start debating ebonics on this chat?

Uh, I just think it is unimaginative and dumb.

Never said anything about it being offensive, buddy.

  8. At least Tonic has nice people that put you in a better mood, whereas across the street, loitering in front of 7-11, they are mean people that make me think negative and sometimes morbid thoughts.

    I hear you there...

I was robbed in front of the 7-11 two summers ago at knifepoint.

But as for Tonic, the place is a happy neighborhood joint that you can go to where people are watching Jeopardy and playing along, they have one of the best jukeboxes in the city, and it has a great atmosphere.

I mean it isn't the Raven, but what could be really?
