  1. Hi all, I wanted to get some expert opinion on this NYC staple. There are recipes online but none really capture the essence of the dish. It is just like pizza, a lot of people claim they have cracked the code but recipees always seem to be lacking It consists of either lamb gyro meat or sauteed chicken on a pita flat-bread or over rice usually accompanied by some salad and "white sauce" (a tangy mayo-based sauce) and hot sauce. Has anyone stumbled on a spot on recipe for this? I once asked the a vendor for the recipee and he shot eye daggers at me. I moved away from NY and I need a way to get my fix. please help.
  2. Thanks for the clarification.... I have asked a few times and I cannot get a straight answer. The cafe is usually very busy and they are trying to move customers through at a quick pace. When I pointed to this dish they just say spicy chicken. That the most I can get out of them. When I say not fried that is probably not the best term. When I google three pepper chicken I get images like the one below where the chicken seems coated/breaded and deep fried. In this dish, I would describe it as wetter, when served with rice you can see the sauce on the rice. I am very crude with my food language so I could not even begin to describe the flavor profile. I will ask them to write down the name of the dish in Chinese next time I go.
  3. I have been reading up and I have purchased "The Wok" by Kenji López-Alt. I have his recommended burner and a stainless steel wok. So I am good to go there. I still am very much a novice at that sort of cooking though. I also been experimenting with various instant pot recipes for SE Asia cooking. I am in the North Carolina in the US.
  4. sorry for my lack of specificity.... my focus is on Chinese and Indian but I am open to anything.... If it has veggies I am down.
  5. Hi I frequent this asian grocery store that has traditional food dishes for takeout. I would like to make these at home and have better control of the recipe and the sodium, but I need to find out what they are first. I included a photo of my first target. It is a spicy dish. but I do not think it is three-pepper chicken because the chicken is not fried and has a saucy texture. When I google three pepper chicken it seems dryer. Anyways the peppers are definitely green, red, and jalapeño. There is also onion in the dish. Any ideas? I did not get a good shot of it but I am also interested in the tofu dish in the top right corner. I will get a better shot next time I go. Any help is much appreciated.
  6. I am trying to improve my diet by eating clean and green. This is harder than it looks because I do not have a great affection for veggies unless it is in a sandwich or on a burger. I have been drawn to asian cuisine since they do make flavorful dishes that lack meat. They are also a bit more involved to make and expensive to order out. I am starting on this food quest that should last a life time. A secondary goal is to up my baking skills and ditch boxed cake mixes forever. Looking forward to interacting with the community Happy New Years!
