Caraway

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know where I might be able to find caraway seeds (alcaravea/carvi) in central Madrid? I have had a good look around in all the supermarkets and smaller food shops, but I just can't track any down. I thought about looking in an "ethnic" shop, but I can't think of any regions that traditionally use a lot of caraway, except maybe Poland(?), and I haven't found a Polish shop yet.

Caraway is used in many other Central European cusines as well: German, Austrian, Hungarian and Czech. This may also be a long shot, but if there are any Jewish delis or suppliers that may be another option.

Perhaps posting your question here will help. The expat community where I am is great at recommending where to find foodstuffs. Often, you'll find people's favorite markets/restaurants, this way. Neighbors/colleagues/students are also good sources of local info... Buena suerte!

They have alcaravea whole and ground at the herbolario on c/Duque de Alba--right in the center between the La Latina and Tirso metro stops.

This store is a great place for dried spices. The aren't open during siesta and close early-ish (around 7:30, I think).
